Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I hate this trend of dogs being allowed in shops. Clothing shops are the worst as their hair gets on the products and for all the shop knows, someone with a dog allergy could pick that up and buy it.

As for coffee shops and pubs, it just ruins the atmosphere. Most dogs are fine but it's the attitude of the owners that their dog has every right to be there and wander around in the way.

Pk37 · 23/01/2019 11:14

I’d like this.
We are looking at getting a dog in the Autumn so it’s good to know I can bring my future dog if I’m out and about

JacquesHammer · 23/01/2019 11:16

Dogs are not the same as children

And yet both can be as irritating and unwelcome.

OP - choose a coffee shop that doesn't allow dogs. All good.

exexpat · 23/01/2019 11:17

Some cafes and shops realise that welcoming dogs can mean increased business overall, but I am sure there will always be ones that prefer not to.

In my experience, it is often the more upmarket places that seems to allow dogs, e.g. if I want to take my (well-behaved, small) dog for an afternoon of bookshop browsing and cafe hopping I go to the poshest area in my city.

Peachyk · 23/01/2019 11:17

Doesn't bother me at all. I remember being little and my dad taking our family dog to the pub where she'd have a spot by the fire and the bones from the kitchenGrin
Our local starbucks let's dogs in the evening when its quiet.

SarahSissions · 23/01/2019 11:17

I dont mind to much. But the staff in my local pub have a habit of petting them and then serving food, and this does bother me

geekone · 23/01/2019 11:20

@Itssosunnyout you are right children are not the same as dogs I would prefer a sniffy cuddly dog in a cafe any day to a screaming sticky toddler which is why I go to dog friendly cafes and not soft play buggy room cafes.

I love seeing dogs in cafe's and pubs. Hygiene wise if the place itself is clean i've no issues.
It's kids you get no peace from in these places!

Dogs are not the same as children.

I've caught more germs from children than I have dogs..

It’s great that some coffee shops allow people to take their dogs in. Often there’s a sign to say they’re a “Dog friendly” café.
In the Spring and Summer you often see lots of dogs and their owners sitting outside cafés. No doubt there’s a drop in takings when it’s colder so why not encourage those customers and their dogs all year round by allowing them to sit inside?

There are so many coffee shops now - if you don’t want to sit in a room with a dog then go to another one three doors down.

Doggydoggydoggy · 23/01/2019 11:23

Dog owner here.

The problem is the owners.
I am against dogs in shops in the UK because the owners are just too selfish and rude.

When I went to Vienna and France dogs were everywhere, including restaurants.
The difference was they walked nicely at heel, they ignored other dogs, they didn’t bark, they didn’t lunge, they didn’t jump up and steal people’s food.
It was quite lovely.

Over here you hardly ever see a dog walking at proper heel, they bark, they jump, they food steal, my local pet shop is considering banning dogs because owners let them bark and lunge at the rabbits and guineas who then die from heart attacks and because owners let them piss all over the stock!
I have a friend that thought it was hilarious when her dog cocked his leg and peed on a woman!
The selfishness and entitlement is unreal.

ToastyFingers · 23/01/2019 11:24

I hate this.
Dd2 is allergic to dog fur and saliva and lately I'm having to dose her up everytime we leave the house because it fashionable to take dogs into shops and cafe's and to walk them off lead in public places.

I like dogs (and so does dd2 when she's had antihistamines) but I'm fed up of dogs in shops etc.

Yokohamajojo · 23/01/2019 11:27

Surely it's up to the owner of the cafe, they obviously think dog friendly places attracts more customers so make business sense. Talk to the owner to find out. I don't see how it's ew though? We take our dog to our local dog friendly pub, he gets a biscuit and a cuddle and then lies on the floor snoozing.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/01/2019 11:27

I love it. I can take my (v well behaved) dog to places in Edinburgh now - its great. There are plenty of places that still don't allow dogs if they are an issue for you.

Mayrhofen · 23/01/2019 11:28

I don't mind cafes and pubs where the dog lies under the table and is beautifully behaved.

I would absolutely hate to be surrounded by dogs who found the sights, sounds and smells too interesting to not lay under the table or worse still owners that want them on their laps. Uggh.

Wordthe · 23/01/2019 11:29

Dogs in the tattoo studio?
A tattoo is very much like a medical procedure, you wouldn't get dogs in the dentist or a dermatologists
I wouldn't fancy it

The dogs aren't going near food, they are no less healthy to have in a cafe than anyone walking dirty shoes in. It's far less healthy when cafes and such, have cakes on the counter where people queue up. Anyone can cough or sneeze on
said cakes. Ugh

JacksonPillock · 23/01/2019 11:33

There are too many dog owners who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes dogs and that even those who do don't necessarily want them jumping around them and slobbering over them.

There are too many parents who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes children and that even those who do don't necessarily want them jumping around them and making a mess on the tables

There are too many people who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes other people and that even those who do don't necessarily want them sitting near them and making a mess on the tables

amusedbush · 23/01/2019 11:37

Dogs are not the same as children.

You are correct. Dogs are much better than children!

GB54 · 23/01/2019 11:38

I’m not a dog person but don’t mind if they’re well behaved. It does seem to be a thing now.

RB68 · 23/01/2019 11:38

I love a coffee shop that pooch and I can sit in or outside. There is one near us that really welcome dogs and it can get crowded - I was in the other day with mine and there were six other dogs - tested her to her limits - we had one bark when a puppy was given food but she shut up and sat immediately I said something.

I think the whole reason lots of kids and adults are so reactive around dogs is that there is no longer any intermingling - everything has to be so comparted and controlled by germaphobes drives me mad.

DGRossetti · 23/01/2019 11:40

If I had to choose a worry, I'd be more concerned at the trend for uncovered food in these places.

There was a recent thread on it, and I was interested to see I was being a bit of a fuddy duddy. Seems germs are in these days ...

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 11:40

If they are next to where people walk dogs a lot or go hiking, it makes commercial sense. In poorer weather often the only people still out walking are dog owners.
