Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

A local coffee shop welcomes dogs. I go there whether my dogs are with me or not. She gets TONS of trade.

I'd rather have a dog at the next table than some of the noisy, messy kids that are around.

hellhavenofury · 23/01/2019 11:40

Most dogs are fine but it's the attitude of the owners that their dog has every right to be there and wander around in the way.

Well yes, if it is a dog friendly cafe their dog DOES have every right to be there as much as any other human! Don't like it, stay at home please!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 23/01/2019 11:42

@FrancisCrawford guide dogs are needed for a reason and by allowing all dogs, the frequency and number of dogs coming into contact with products increases, increasing the likelihood of something happening.

Loungewearfan · 23/01/2019 11:42

Very few do but I think it’s great, my local cafe Nero does, if I can get through the five prams left in the middle of the place.

Wetherspoons won’t allow dogs, that says it all I think Grin

SpamChaudFroid · 23/01/2019 11:42

How do you find out if somewhere's dog friendly though? Do I tie my dog up outside and go in and ask, or walk in with him and ask them? Is a dog bowl outside a sort of secret signal? Like pampas grass is for swingers?

I'm a new dog owner, and dog etiquette seems to have changed since I had my childhood dog in the 80s.

DarlingNikita · 23/01/2019 11:43

I've never seen a dog in a cafe jumping around or slobbering over people.
I have no doubt they'd be equally inconsiderate in coffee shops, allowing them to wander around the place, sniff at people's legs, bark their heads off and then taking umbrage if anyone objects. In my neighbourhood lots of cafes are dog-friendly and, again, I've never seen this behaviour. Dogs in cafes here are without exception sitting or lying quietly by their owner's table, or standing/sitting by them in the queue.
Sometimes they might slobber or sniff at people who approach them and give them attention (like me!), but that's the person's choice.

KurriKurri · 23/01/2019 11:43

Our local coffe shop allows dogs, - I like seeing them in there, it is usually elderly terriers who sit quietly and graciously accept pats from passing customers. I don't take my dog because he is far too silly and would try to sit on everyones lap and eat their cake. I think most owners of daft dogs don't take them into coffee shops.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/01/2019 11:44

the attitude of the owners that their dog has every right to be there and wander around in the way.

I've been in many places where there were dogs - and I've NEVER seen them "wondering around".

I've been in even more places where they're were kids - and most times the little buggers are in your face in one way or another - making a racket, flinging food, running up and down etc

I prefer a well-behaved dog to a badly behaved child any day.

*there, not they're

Nanasueathome · 23/01/2019 11:45

Have a look at the website for Archie’s of Cheltenham

anniehm · 23/01/2019 11:46

Yes, have always taken mine, what's the problem? He's better behaved than the little brats who won't sit still and "cleans" up their mess.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 11:46

Generally dogs in coffee shops and pubs sit under the table. The exception has been if it is advertised as a dog friendly pub where dogs are actively encouraged. Then yes I have seen dogs wandering around.

Wixi · 23/01/2019 11:48

YANBU I would avoid coffee shops if I saw dogs in them. I don't particularly like dogs, although we had them when I was growing up, and my DD is scared of dogs. I don't think they are appropriate where food and drink are being served.

bicback · 23/01/2019 11:49

I've noticed this too. I don't mind as long as the dog doesn't stink or start barking as is sometimes the case. One cafe I go to often has the sweetest dog that never seems to smell. I actually go there hoping to see him.Smile

KarmaStar · 23/01/2019 11:49

The dogs I see in cafe's,pubs etc are always quiet and well behaved and I'd much rather sit next to them than some families who allow their dc to run around freely, screaming, skating, emptying sauce bottles, sugar packets into tables, tripping people up,throwing food on the floor ,having tantrums etc.
A dog that sits quietly? I really don't see why not, they are hardly sitting on the seats licking plates.🙈🙉🙊😀

LittleLongDog · 23/01/2019 11:49

’How do you find out if somewhere's dog friendly though?’
I wonder exactly the same thing.

Especially places that are a bit of a grey area. Starbucks for example is ‘officially’ dog free yet on instagram there are constantly posts of people and their dogs in them.

I’m a new dog owner too and I’d really love to know where we’re welcome.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 11:50

I find places that actively welcome dogs, do not tend to actively encourage children anyway. They cater for a different market.

Baxdream · 23/01/2019 11:50

I always joke that my dog is cleaner than some humans 😂 he's a lovely fluffy Lhasa apso who doesn't moult or dribble and rarely barks.
He comes to a local coffee shop. But there's a Costa nearby if anyone doesn't want dogs

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/01/2019 11:50

Obvs you keep your dog on a lead when in a venue - I have never seen a dog 'wandering around'. Also if a dog starts misbehaving generally the staff will ask the owner to take the dog outside - quite rightly. My dog will sit quietly by my side or under the table - you wouldn't even know he is there (except he is quite large). If you don't like dogs go to a Wetherspoons, they recently banned them - one reason I won't be back (with or without my dog!)

1Wildheartsease · 23/01/2019 11:50

Dogs doing the washing-up or taste-checking customer orders should not be allowed.

Dogs sitting quietly with their owners or accepting pats from customers - should be welcome.

Dogs often add a bit of peace and cosiness - just right for most of us.

There are more complaints about children as sitting waiting for food isn't natural or enjoyable for most of them.

I have told this story on here before but a toddler in my local post office calmly did a poo on the floor, while his mum was queuing.
They left, didn’t even offer to clear it up.

The hygiene issues are not based on fact, we all know that the biggest risk to hygiene in eateries is staff not washing their hands after using the loo and insufficient cleaning of appliances between raw/cooked meat.

It’s just people who don’t like dogs, fair enough, just don’t go to the minority of places that allow them. It’s not an issue.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 11:52

Just ask if you can bring your dog in. Places that actively encourage dogs provide bowls of water and dog treats. In our local pub every dog that goes in walks up to the bar and sits there waiting for its treat.

housebuildingsos · 23/01/2019 11:52

Kids are worse. I think they smell worse and are messier. Would much rather be sat with a dog than a little messy human. Go to a different place it's easy enough. YABVU
