Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I went to a ' dog cafe' in Bexhill. Not a fan myself. I'd rather eat my food without dogs trying to sniff my plate.

I assume that was a cafe explicitly aimed at dogs and owners rather
than a normal cafe that allows dogs. Allowed behaviour standards are presumably different in actual dog cafes.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 13:24

@DGRossetti

You would have hated the 70s then They sold sandwiches, already prepared, with no cover on them at all . Somewhere I have a photo of some such sandwiches . When I find it Ill post it.

Re the dogs . If its ok with the cafe owners and shop owners (though I have only ever seen Guide Dogs in shops, personally) then seek out non dog friendly ones is all I can suggest to you OP

Carnivaloftheanimals · 23/01/2019 13:26

As long as it's specifically advertised as 'dog friendly' or has a notice to that effect then fair enough. I'd know not to go in.

But I would be really annoyed if I was relaxing in a café enjoying some food and someone walked in with a dog, and the staff just allowed it. Particularly if the dog owner ended up sitting at a table close to me. I just don't want dogs anywhere near me when I'm eating.

I agree some parents are not very considerate in restaurants either. But that doesn't mean it's okay for dog owners to behave likewise.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2019 13:28

Just been in a naice cafe and a lady came in with the most enormous golden retriever I've ever seen. I don't like dogs but he was gorgeous. Even if he did get in the at. I'm tempted to take my cat in to Caffè Nero!

KrispyKremes · 23/01/2019 13:29

I can't stand dogs in Coffee shops!

I end up not being able to focus on my coffee/conversation because I spend the whole time wondering if there's a way I can befriend the dog and end up with it sitting with me instead of it's owner.

(so in short, I love seeing dogs out and about with their families)

TropicPlunder · 23/01/2019 13:29

I'm the proud owner of a dog and a small child. I take both to cafes fairly regularly, and if either was to unreasonably impact another customer, we'd leave, and think hard before going back! (Yes, dogs are nothing like children, but I'm really not a fan of kids running riot in cafes)
My dog only goes into pubs/cafes/shops after a long walk, when I'm pretty sure she'll settle out of the way. There's no chance she'd be in physical contact with anyone, or their stuff, unless they ask to say hi to her.
Has anyone seriously had their latte or face licked by a dog (or child) while minding their own business in a cafe?!
Agree there are plenty available who don't allow dogs

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 13:30

@KrispyKremes . I am much the same Smile

Wordthe · 23/01/2019 13:31

@Tropic you sound like a great dog owner 😎

Yes, this! Same!

PinkGin24 · 23/01/2019 13:37

Don't like dogs in cafes or shops etc. then don't go into those ones. It is really VERY simple. There are enough that don't let dogs in!!

Now the sooner the introduce child free shops, restaurants and cafes the better!

LakieLady · 23/01/2019 13:39

Dogs are not the same as children.

So true. Dogs are far easier to train and tend not to answer back. And if they're really badly behaved, you can leave dogs home alone without anyone calling social services.

LakieLady · 23/01/2019 13:45

How do you find out if somewhere's dog friendly though? Do I tie my dog up outside and go in and ask, or walk in with him and ask them? Is a dog bowl outside a sort of secret signal? Like pampas grass is for swingers?

Often they have a "dogs welcome" sign. If it's unclear and the cafe/bar is small enough, I'd just stick my head round the door and ask.

TropicPlunder · 23/01/2019 13:48

There are local and nation 'dog friendly' facebook pages, where there are normally lists of days out, cafes, holiday lets which welcome dogs, and any restrictions, e.g. outside only. I stick to these, ask first, or go to places where I've seen dogs before

SapphireSeptember · 23/01/2019 13:49

But why dogs? You don't see people bringing their other pets out with them very often. I know people who are massive dog lovers that hate spiders, would they mind me having a hot chocolate with my pet spider? Probably not, but I'm expected to put up with their much larger smellier creature. Ditto with rats, although I don't have any pet rats at the moment.
And for the pro dog brigade, what about shops and cafes that state 'no dogs except guide dogs' but people with dogs insist on taking them into those places? That drives me mad! I once witnessed two women with two chihuahuas in Halifax, where one of the dogs had taken a dump on the floor and one of the women was cleaning it up (yuck) and shouldn't have been there in the first place. I then saw them get asked to leave New Look, and then when they tried to go into Poundland weren't allowed. I've also seen people with dogs in the library, Boots, Savers and Sainsbury's. They all have the same rules. I've actually questioned some people and they always say 'but it's different'. I think people who own small dogs are generally more entitled about this, and I think small dogs are the worst. (I work in a cafe and someone tried to smuggle their dog in once, I told my supervisor and she asked them to leave.)
Anyway, since Nero's started letting dogs in I've switched to Costa, hate going in Wilkos and order stuff online instead, and dream of opening my own cafe for anticocial people like me. Yes I hate dogs, I'm not apologising. I don't want dog hairs on my clothes.

adaline · 23/01/2019 13:53

I love being able to take my dog to cafes - means we can stop for cake or lunch on a long walk and he can have a rest and a bowl of water or a treat.

More cafes don't allow them than do, though, so it's not as though you have no choice.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 13:54

If you take your spider out a walk, then yes I think you should be allowed to take it into a cafe.

Peanutss · 23/01/2019 13:54

I don't know, I can see your point but then just don't go to a cafe that alloww dogs in future?

I take mine to one round the corner from me. She brings him a sausage with my cup of tea. He is actively welcomed by the owner (and the other dogs I see there from time to time).

I do only ever sit outside with him though as it's very cramped inside and I wouldn't want him to take up room!

BlueSlipperSocks · 23/01/2019 13:55

Dog friendly cafes have a sign saying "Dog Friendly". It lets potential customers know there will be dogs in the cafe. Dog hating customer can then use their brain and go to one of the very many cafes that don't allow dogs. That seems to be too difficult for some.

If I'm on holiday I welcome cafes and pubs that I can take my dog into. I need to eat and have a drink on during the day. Where am I supposed to leave the dog?

If I dont have my dog with me I am free to choose whether to use a dog friendly cafe or one of the myriad cafes that do not allow dogs. It's not rocket science!

Thisnamechanger · 23/01/2019 13:56

Basically me on the London Overground every day! Grin

TropicPlunder · 23/01/2019 13:56

sapphire, I did once meet 2 ferrets at a pub, and we were delighted. I don't like spiders, but wouldn't mind a tarantula at the next table to me, as long as it didn't come near me, or try to put it's head in my hand bag. I'd like it under close control!

madeyemoodysmum · 23/01/2019 13:56

I hate going into pubs that allow dogs. My local pub the dogs take presidence over customers eating food.

It’s stinks in there.

Myheartbelongsto · 23/01/2019 13:58

I struggle with dogs in their owners kitchen so no to coffee shops

LakieLady · 23/01/2019 14:01

Of course a well behaved terrier is fine, who could not love a well behaved terrier?
But we are not in the 1950s, dog owners are no longer polite well mannered owners of well-behaved terriers

I currently live with the third in a line of well-behaved terriers. I do hope you're not implying that we're behind the times? Grin

The dog's manners are probably better than mine, she's very refained and ladylike, and would never dream of approaching a stranger unless she's been properly introduced.

icannotremember · 23/01/2019 14:01

It would put me off and I wouldn't order if I went in and there were dogs. If I was already there and had made an order I'd stay, but wouldn't go back. I don't like dogs much, I don't want a dog, I don't want to spend time in places where dogs are, and I especially don't want to spend time with people who insist that everyone who doesn't love their dog is deficient!

That said, not giving the cafe my custom is all I'd do. I wouldn't tell them they should stop dogs going in and I wouldn't slate them to others. I just wouldn't go.

Peanutss · 23/01/2019 14:02

Myheartbelongsto

Genuinely curious as to what problems are caused by dogs in a kitchen?

My dog goes in my kitchen. He's not permanently in there but you have to go through it to get to living room, he eats on the floor in there etc...

He doesn't walk along my counter tops or anything.
