To think it's not fair transwomen get hair removal on the NHS but women with PCOS don't?! **Title edited by MNHQ**

This is quite frankly bullshit.

I don’t think blaming trans women for this (or accusing them of not having support for women) is helpful. Trans women have not done anything wrong in successfully getting this treatment on the NHS and I’m sure none of them would argue against women with PCOS getting this treatment.

But I do think that including the fact that trans women can access this treatment is relevant to the discussion. Anytime you’re discussing a service that is provided to one group of people and not another it is obviously important to talk about why it’s offered to that group.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 03/01/2019 19:16

janet trans kids?? Really?? Do you work for mermaids?

Women have the protected rights for their sex. If tw stopped trying to shit all over that right then maybe we might be more helpful. But as it stands, tw and tra's are doing everything they can to remove women.

Maybe have a think about that. Hmm

nailak · 03/01/2019 19:17

Janet people are pointing out sexism against biological women. This is apparent in the differences of services offered.
The seperation between trans and biological is not being made on this thread, it has been determined by people who offer services to trans that aren't offered to biological. Also by trans women who expect services because they are trans that aren't available to biological.

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 19:18

Janet are you a transwoman yourself?

Hedgehogblues · 03/01/2019 19:21

This thread highlights all the reasons I muted the feminism section

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 19:23

Yes. Those pesky biological women actually standing up for themselves. What dreadful bitches. Confused

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/01/2019 19:26

Trans women have not done anything wrong in successfully getting this treatment on the NHS and I’m sure none of them would argue against women with PCOS getting this treatment.

I’ve seen arguments that “being trans is life threatening and PCOS and similar conditions are not and therefore the former should trump the latter” many, many times on both social media and from students in my profession.

SerenaOverjoyed · 03/01/2019 19:34

I have PCOS and I'm disappointed to see it be used to fuel transphobia.

'Because this group have it' is a poor argument for a service to be funded. It's not about who gets what, it's about what is needed. There is an clear argument that facial hair is hugely distressing for women. This is what matters and this is why it the trestment should be funded.

If the DM genuinely cared about PCOS they would focus alone on the experience of PCOS - but the heart of it is really to invalidate and undermine trams women receiving NHS support. It's mean minded rows like this which contribute towards poor and inconsistent funding in the NHS, it's just divide and conquer.

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 19:36

Where is the transphobia Serena?

MeredithGrey1 · 03/01/2019 19:38

@OVAgroundWOMBlingfree

But that doesn’t meant they automatically think women with PCOS shouldn’t get the treatment, which was my main point about not blaming trans women that the treatment isn’t more widely available. I’m sure plenty of people have conditions that they view as more serious than other conditions, it doesn’t mean they think those people shouldn’t get treated.

SerenaOverjoyed · 03/01/2019 19:42

I said fuel transphobia - the article is clearly intended to stoke up anger towards trans women for daring to accept NHS care.

Artesia · 03/01/2019 19:45

This is surely where the TWAW argument falls down- women don’t get hair removal treatment on the NHS. If TW want to be regarded as women, with no qualification or distinction, surely they should have parity with natal women in this respect too?

Janettomas · 03/01/2019 19:45

Star-crossed seahorse. What do you think? And are you suggesting people are only allowed to call others on what they see as cruel dehumanising and invalidating maybe even bullying attitudes to vulnerrable groups if they themselves are part of that group? If a site full of mothers can't have a bit of empathy with some of the most vulnerable and victimised members of society who will. I'm ashamed now to have considered myself a feminist in the past.

Jenny17 · 03/01/2019 19:53

Those of you who are coming across as trans bashers are equating trans with male
Transwomen are biological male.

Believe it or not some groups have it worse than “women “ do
Funny enough this is not an example. Quite the reverse.

wishful2012 · 03/01/2019 19:54

When I seen this post I thought great !! Everyone or none but after reading it it's so upsetting to think that people just think am vain. My confidants was rock bottom, couldn't stay over anywhere and was on antidepressants. All I wanted was to feel normal !! I went private for facial hair and most likely will need it again, am on minimum wage with other bills needing paid but this was affecting me and my family, even now I have to shave my chest and bit on my breast before being intimate. It's horrible and sole destroying

Superpooper · 03/01/2019 19:58

I don’t understand how anyone could conclude women with PCOS are inter gender or what the point in concluding that would be?

christmasiscancelled · 03/01/2019 20:06

I have PCOS and I receive laser hair removal on the NHS. I'm in Scotland.

I understand it is different in England however.

I don't consider myself inter-sex, having birthed and breast fed two children. But their are people out there who believe I should...

Janettomas · 03/01/2019 20:14

Maybe we're all 'intersex' . Maybe male - female is a too simplistic a construction. Maybe this is what they were trying to say if they did indeed but it got distorted by those with an agenda to discredit them. Wouldn't be the first time oppressed groups fought each other to the delight of the real oppressers. What's wrong with solidarity and inclusiveness?

Hopeislost · 03/01/2019 20:15

I have PCOS and have had laser hair removal on the NHS. This was in the North-West of England a few years ago.

Superpooper · 03/01/2019 20:15

Wow, that’s the most bizarre thing I’ve ever read.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/01/2019 20:16

Umm if we are all intersex what I’m earth are trans people transitioning too.

I’m a woman. Every person on the planet is born of a woman.
