To think it's not fair transwomen get hair removal on the NHS but women with PCOS don't?! **Title edited by MNHQ**

This is quite frankly bullshit.

Apart from anything else, it doesn't make sense. What is the point of removing unwanted facial hair? The only reason I can think of is to remove mental distress.

If being trans is not a mental illness and it shouldn't be medicalised, then why is the NHS providing any treatment at all?

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 18:39

Disgusted at how anti trans Mumsnet is. Past being shocked at the hostility now. Are you aware of the prevalence of suicide and mental health issues in this group. Have a bit of compassion if nothing else mumsnetters please

Check out what the statistics actually say before parroting off crap that you have heard third hand.

This.

Pachyderm1 · 03/01/2019 18:40

TRAs also say that women with PCOS are not really women, we’re intersex. It’s just beyond offensive.

What a crock of literal shit. Don’t you feel guilty that you’re making up lies and peddling them as facts?

Really?

Actually PCOS has nothing to do with sex.

The cause is insulin resistance and the treatment is metformin.

It's an endocrine disorder.

Superpooper · 03/01/2019 18:44

Got some evidence there pal?

StealthPolarBear · 03/01/2019 18:45

Well this is an easy one to solve. These women need to identify as men who identify as women. Problem solved. Next!

NoAngel1 · 03/01/2019 18:48

Women with PCOS and transgender people aren’t the only ones that can suffer with the problem of hirsutism. The definition given by my local NHS is that there is facial hair that is obvious and is visible at a conversational distance. I think needing to wax your upper lip once per month is different to having thick, dark, coarse hair all over your chin and neck (I was only 18 and it was awful).
However given that you don’t need a diagnosis of PCOS to be eligible I can see how it is a grey area in some areas.
There is a lot of inequality in our NHS- some people get free prescriptions because their illness is considered to be one that requires the sufferer to be able to do this but other conditions don’t qualify (eg asthma is life threatening and needs regular treatment to keep under control but asthmatics must pay for their prescriptions)

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 03/01/2019 18:48

Not read the thread but I thought exactly the same thing op.

I have pcos I have been crushed by the excess hair growth all my life, I've never had any help or sympathy fro the doctors, nothing even when I asked to see a consultant.

Turning into a man when you don't bloody want too and the NHS doesn't give a shit. 😠😠😡

Bombardier25966 · 03/01/2019 18:49

Augusta2012 please read the full article that you seek to rely on, as it doesn't support your assertion. Point 6 in particular explains that, whilst spending has risen, the cuts in the rate of increase mean it simply cannot keep up with the demands of the service.

You should always check any statistics released by the Tories, they're almost always bollocks.

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 18:49

The intersex/pcos blurring is referred to on the FPFW website I think.

RomanyRoots · 03/01/2019 18:50

I don't get PCOS but need facial hair removal, I can't get it on the NHS either. I'm considering joining the circus as a bearded lady.
It knocks my confidence and depresses me but I just have to buy stuff to remove. Sad

Augusta2012 · 03/01/2019 18:54

So much buying in to the Tory austerity agenda on here. Does anyone really believe the fifth richest country in the world can’t afford to fund hair removal for people with medical issues causing excess hair? The UK can afford a full medical service, the fact the current government chooses not to fund it means nothing.

This is bullshit again. The problems we have with crap care and crap treatment are because of the NHS, not inspite of it. It’s an inefficient behemoth which does not give value for money but it can’t be reformed or improved because it’s a sacred cow.

We should be able to have a decent health service, but we can’t because we’re lumbered with the NHS.

I’d much rather have a European style system which is still free at the point of use.

Besides, I’ve worked in the NHS and I saw the lies the left wing told about the Naylor report to score political points. The Naylor Report was a fantastic plan to massively increase capital funding and investment in the NHS without costing the tax payer a penny but the left is doing its best to destroy it by making entirely false and misleading claims.

Besides, I don’t see you whinging about the PFI contracts Blair and Brown were so keen on which will cost us £2 billion in total for things like charging £350 for changing a lightbulb.

NOTthepinkranger · 03/01/2019 19:00

Augusta you’re the one peddling bullshit as proven by your link above

LovesLaboursLost · 03/01/2019 19:05

Augusta, I am happy to whinge about the PFI contracts. They’re an excellent example of why involving the private sector in public services is just shit.

Cornettoninja · 03/01/2019 19:06

Well isn’t this thread just a swamp of agendas?

downthestrada · 03/01/2019 19:07

I have PCOS but none of the symptoms at the moment. I was told by my GP that I could get hair removal treatment if needed though.

LovesLaboursLost · 03/01/2019 19:09

It is absolutely untrue that NHS spending as a percentage of GDP has gone up. The graphs clearly show increase under the last Labour government followed by decline.

Janettomas · 03/01/2019 19:10

I get what’s going on here . Those of you who are coming across as trans bashers are equating trans with male . Some massive chips on shoulders here . And me me mes . Believe it or not some groups have it worse than “women “ do . Why not listen to what the people you’re taking it upon yourselves to define say themselves and let them define themselves and speak for themselves . Listen to their stories. Don’t take it upon yourselves to tell their stories for them . How do you know what it’s like to walk in their shoes? Would you listen or care if it was your child ?

Oldermum156 · 03/01/2019 19:12

@nailak well I live in the US but it took 20 years for me to even begin getting treatment for PCOS I suffered since age 13 and they certainly never gave me any treatment for my extensive facial hair problem. They barely treat it at all, I had to fight for everything I get every step of the way.

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 19:12

Janet no one is 'trans bashing' FGS. What a load of twaddle.

Juells · 03/01/2019 19:13

Believe it or not some groups have it worse than “women “ do .

"women" 😂 The word that we've appropriated? 😂😂😂

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/01/2019 19:16

Got some evidence there pal?

Well I’m not one to link to Tumblr and Reddit as a source but those are the playgrounds in which TRAs decide women with PCOS are intersex.
