To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

Surely you can call him what you like.

evilosgr · 01/11/2018 14:50

Haha sure! Although I guess I could call him Hedgehog but I'd think that was unreasonable

It's a perfectly reasonable, normal and rather nice solid name.

AlwaysFuckingTired · 01/11/2018 14:52

John is nice enough (prefer Jonathan) but Johnny means condoms where I'm from

Glumglowworm · 01/11/2018 14:52

Whatever you name him there will be someone who doesn’t like it

John isn’t as popular now as it used to be, but it’s still a well known name which millions of men have shared.

Velvetbee · 01/11/2018 14:52

It’s a fine, strong name. Due a comeback. Lots of good Johns out there.

FleeceDetective · 01/11/2018 14:53

It’s a classic, no harm done.

daisypond · 01/11/2018 14:53

John is fabulous classic name that's not so common these days and will suit a grown-up. Finn is a passing fad - nice, but already a bit dated.

SparkyBlue · 01/11/2018 14:53

Gorgeous classic name that will never date but I am biased as I have a Michael so another solid classic name. I am always getting compliments on it and I bet you will find similar.

SEsofty · 01/11/2018 14:54

Says who?

TheCraicDealer · 01/11/2018 14:58

I've never met a John I didn't like tbh and quite a few have been "young". It's on my list. I know of a John-William who'd be about 23 now (not sure if he's still using both names though!).

FairfaxAikman · 01/11/2018 15:00

The only reason DS doesn't have John as a middle name is that both my nephews (different sides) do. So we went with the Gaelic version - Iain.

EleanorLavish · 01/11/2018 15:00

I love the name John, and really wanted to call my first DS John.
However my parents were horrified.
“Don’t call him John! They never turn out well”.
Me-“Eh?”
Apparently they had realised in life that every John they knew had never really turned out ‘right’. Confused
My DBro is called ....John!Grin
“Exactly!” Said my mum when I pointed it out.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/11/2018 15:00

John is gorgeous and is very underused right now which is perfect.

Poodles1980 · 01/11/2018 15:00

Still a fairly popular name here. Several Johns in my ds class of 5 year olds.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:03

I don't know any young Johns. I'm surprised at more than 1 in a class tbh! Maybe it is coming back?

It's a good name imo.

MaruMaru · 01/11/2018 15:03

First name of my son (16), brother, father and grandfather. I didn't consider any other name.

Worieddd · 01/11/2018 15:05

I like the name John

SuperstarDJ · 01/11/2018 15:05

I met a baby John in 2016. It was a refreshing change from all the Leo, Theo, Jacks etc.

Satsumaeater · 01/11/2018 15:07

I like the name John too. Much better than Finn (no offence to people called Finn, just my taste in names). I always think when you are naming a baby you need to consider that they will be a future adult and what suits a 2 year old may not suit a 35 or 75 year old, and they will be an adult far longer than a baby. John is a solid name that will last through life.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:07

A traditional nickname for a John was Jack. That has become so popular in its own right though.

Ezzie29 · 01/11/2018 15:09

Ooh no I love the name John, good, classic name!

MicroManaged · 01/11/2018 15:10

I like it, it’s one of my ds’s middle names. Due a comeback imo.

DangerousBeanz · 01/11/2018 15:10

My dad was a John. He was a lovely lovely man, so I'm a bit biased. But yes, I like John.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 01/11/2018 15:10

Yanbu. I know a little Johnny (Jonathan).
