To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

Not so good if you're in America though.

Oysterbabe · 01/11/2018 15:12

It's fine. I prefer Jonathan too though.
I know a baby Frank and they soon grow into their names.

It's a good name.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/11/2018 15:14

John is bloody marvellous.

Crack on.

recklessruby · 01/11/2018 15:14

It's my dad s name and he's a lovely man so I m biased but it's a good solid name in my opinion better than all the made up type names around.
My ds is called Stephen but has been Steve forever. He s 30.
Names like John and Steve and micheal don't date and aren't going to embarrass their owners as adults either.
I wonder if baby Kai/Kaiden/Daisy~Leanna~Ariana will be too happy when they 're 30?
Finn was popular when dd was little 20 years ago. There was always a few in her school. Haven't heard anyone using it lately though.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 01/11/2018 15:19

John's ripe for a revival.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:20

I know a lot of Finley/Finlay shortened to Finn around 14 years old and younger.

I like John, prefer it to Finn. I know about 10 Finlays/Finleys of varying ages, often shortened to Finn

cjt110 · 01/11/2018 15:21

I was taking names with a colleague yesterday and quoted my husband who said "What's wrong with normal names like John or Kevin"

DS has a kid in his nursery class called Simon.

LeeMiller · 01/11/2018 15:21

John is lovely (Jonathon even nicer) , I much prefer it to Finn. Strong, simple and classic.

EdwardScissorskills · 01/11/2018 15:22

I like John, and know two under 10. So not so many he would be John A in a class also containing John C and John R, but a classic name.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:22

I remember meeting a young George around 1980 and feeling pity for the guy.

PositiveVibez · 01/11/2018 15:23

John yes, johnny, not so much. A lot of talk of Johnny bags when I was younger, which was slang for condoms X

Bumbledop · 01/11/2018 15:24

I love the name John.

TabbyMumz · 01/11/2018 15:25

I like John, and also like Jonty.

Tinty · 01/11/2018 15:25

In my village (very rural) there are 4 Johns under the age of 7. There are only 12 dc under the age of 7 in the whole village, 5 are girls (Johnetta Grin?)

Seriously though John is a nice name and if the baby grows up too cool when he is a teenager he can always rename himself J. Smile.

I think John is having a revival in our area.

Now if you want to go really old school, you could go with Barry, Kevin, Gary or Patrick. Grin.

TabbyMumz · 01/11/2018 15:27

I tend to think Finn is the posh version of Wayne or Kevin....ie a name that will become too popular for a time, then dated. John has lasted forever.

butterflysugarbaby · 01/11/2018 15:28

You could call him Finn John. But it may be an issue if he gets fat.

I neither love nor hate the name John. Not exactly an awful name. Wouldn't be a name I would call my son though.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:28

Maybe Alan will be the next classic that comes back.

steff13 · 01/11/2018 15:30

I like John. Here in the US, it's slang for toilet, I don't know if it is there, though.

puzzledlady · 01/11/2018 15:31

Do what you want - it’s your son! A million people might think you’re unreasonable becasue I don’t know - ‘flagpole train stop’ might be the new way to name children but who cares - you go right ahead and name him John! FWIW- my father is law is John and I know a Jonathan, a Johnny and a Jonnie. Also know a Jono.

Chickenitalia · 01/11/2018 15:31

John is a family name for us, brothers, uncles, grandparents on both sides. DS was getting it no matter what!

On the plus side he loves it, not another one at his school at all. He is 5.

There are hordes of Finn/Finlay/Phinlay (yes really) boys. I don’t like it personally, stick with John.

Welshheart · 01/11/2018 15:31

Your son call him what you like.
Nothing wrong with John or finn imo.
