To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

"Names like John and Steve and micheal don't date"

Absolutely untrue I think they are uninspiring working class names which no-one under the age of 30 has!

Bodicea · 02/11/2018 14:00

John is my son’s middle name.
I think if I were going for a first name it would be Johnathon - which is a bit more current.

sleepychunky · 02/11/2018 14:02

We have a baby Terry in our family (born last year), not sure there are many of them around!

SPR1107 · 02/11/2018 14:08

John is a reasonable name, but Jonny/Johnny means condom here too

scarlettoftheseas · 02/11/2018 14:32

I like John! My friends 5 year old ds is called Jonathan, although family sometimes call him JoJo. I think it's a really sweet name! If you like it, that's the main thing Smile

Ladymargarethall · 02/11/2018 14:58

uninspiring working class names 😂 Mumsnet is a wonderful place. Most of us see Michael, Stephen and John as Biblical names.
OP my first love was called John so I may be a bit biased but I think it is a great name.

nordlac · 02/11/2018 15:18

Michael is still top 100 and 20 years ago was top 25, so there are definitely plenty of people under 30 called Michael! John likewise was still top 100 until two or three years ago and is only just outside it now.

Stephen/Steven I agree is more dated and hardly used these days.

Oh bless your little cotton socks.

The John I know is about 21, v posh and went to a top public school.

MTBMummy · 02/11/2018 15:57

I chose a more traditional name for my son, and I love it, it's well known just not commonly used now days - just like John.

It's a great name, really who cares what other people think?

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 02/11/2018 15:59

I think John is a great name. It was 2nd choice for DS. Strong and traditional, but there won't be 5 of them in his class at school

sachabloom · 02/11/2018 16:00

Love the name John. It's not old fashioned, it's a classic. X

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/11/2018 16:02

I think it's a good, strong name and well overdue for a comeback!

ethelfleda · 02/11/2018 16:25

I really like that name for a baby!

Pammie70 · 02/11/2018 16:50

We have a Alan at my Pre-school, he is a lovely little boy

Sashkin · 02/11/2018 16:55

MirriVan It took a lot of work to persuade DH that we were not calling DS “Barold” (which is apparently the original Anglo-Saxon source of the name Barry). He still reckons it is a brilliant name.

😂😂😂 Two of the least working class people I know are called Michael - one who is older (60+) and another who is 27. In fact, I know about nine or ten people called Michael and their ages and background span every possible permutation (well, not every but you get the idea). It's a very classless and timeless name.

The small John I know is the offspring of a teacher and archivist FWIW.

apostropheuse · 03/11/2018 18:24

Prince Michael of Kent is working class, didn't you know?Grin

RChick · 04/11/2018 05:53

I have a 6 month old with a similar type of name - a name he shares with his father and grandfather.
I love the name and it'll age well through his life, but i had a real problem calling him it for the first few months as it just didn't suit a tiny baby! We do get a lot of nice comments on it and i also feel he's grown in to it now.

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 04/11/2018 06:05

I like it. I prefer Johnathan tbh but they're both good solid names, not that common among babies today either.

Yura · 04/11/2018 06:42

Why not? you can always choose a less traditional middle name. Classic names are great though - easy to spell for everybody, easy to remember, and still appropriate when they are adults!

deptfordgirl · 04/11/2018 06:50

I know a baby John. I think it's very cute and no one seems to think it's particularly unusual. He doesn't get Johnny but that could be a more modern nickname.

likablum · 04/11/2018 07:03

I have a 5 yo John and I love his name more and more. Stands out in a class full of Alfies

Bibijayne · 04/11/2018 07:06

John is a lovely name.

Gran22 · 04/11/2018 07:08

Lots of Johns in our family when DS was born, so we compromised and named him Jonathan. As an adult he gets Jon. Neighbours have a seven year old Jonathan. They also spell it with one H and two As thank goodness!
