Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

Lovely. Good choice for child and adult. Timeless. Don’t discuss choices with people in real life- it’s your choice and never ends well...I know!

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/11/2018 07:43

My primary aged DC are at school with a John. Sisters are Elizabeth and Mary. They're the only ones at school.

FishCanFly · 02/11/2018 07:56

Go for it! John is cool

Unfinishedkitchen · 02/11/2018 07:59

A good timeless name. To be honest I’m sick of names like Finn, Oliver, Oscar, Freya, Milo etc.

I inwardly eye roll when I hear someone yell out one of those names in the street. They are the new ‘Sharon’ and ‘Tracey’ were I live. Half the class must share those names.

LetTheDogsOut · 02/11/2018 08:00

i like Jonathan nn Jon. It was going to be DC name but she was a girlSmile

fl0baDob · 02/11/2018 08:04

Well,

DS 2 is called Herbert John. He has never had any problems with his names.

SallyWD · 02/11/2018 08:05

I love the name John and Johnny. It'll never date. I know a John of 11. Great choice!

Alltheseposes · 02/11/2018 08:09

I went to a baby massage class yesterday. The two little boys were called Atlas and Roux.

Call him John. He’ll thank you for it one daySmile

Florrieboo · 02/11/2018 08:22

My children used to go to school with lots of children from China. They all had their original names but were known as western names here. A LOT of them were called John. There were a few Kevin's as well and the girls were equally named after the 70's.

I love John as a name, my dad is John so I am biased.

OatsBeansBarley · 02/11/2018 08:24

How is Roux pronounced? Like the sauce I'm guessing?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 02/11/2018 08:28

I really like it. I prefer Jonathan as then you have more choice over what he will be called. It's a strong, classic, traditional name without being dated.

Junkmail · 02/11/2018 08:31

John is a great name. But then I also like Hedgehog so I’m possibly not the best judge.

elliejjtiny · 02/11/2018 08:59

One of my boys has John as a middle name. I love it, very classic.

tillytrotter21 · 02/11/2018 09:07

It's a name he won't need to change as an adult to be taken seriously in the world nor will he be one of many in his classes. It's also not a name that 'dates' it, schools have a lot of Britneys etc, maybe Meghan will be common in the future. Always remember your baby will spend the majority of its life as an adult!

Pickupthephone · 02/11/2018 09:13

I can’t understand why anyone would think such a lovely, classic, biblical name would be unreasonable in this day and age? Would they say the same about Luke, Mark and Matthew (all also lovely names)?

I think it’s really ironic how parents who go for solid classic names - like John, Matthew, Michael, Elizabeth, etc - are paradoxically the unusual ones these days, whereas the parents who think they’re being terribly interesting and unusual with their choice are unwittingly being boring sheep.

maras2 · 02/11/2018 09:14

4 Biblical books of John and 1 King so can't be bad (and it's cute).Smile

londonrach · 02/11/2018 09:17

Its a great solid name. Dont understand the problem. Its better from an unpopular name to a popular one. Finn is common so if you called your ds that name he wont be the only finn in class or school. Just call her ds whatever you like. My dsis chose an old unpopular name for her ds. Now theres more babies for the name as its a lovely boys name.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/11/2018 10:40

John can't be compared IMO to 'old man' names like Albert or Stanley. Those names have really dated people in the past, and will do so again once fashions change, as they always do.
Some names never really date or go out of fashion. John and Elizabeth are just two.

FrangelicoCandyBoughs · 02/11/2018 10:45

I love the name John but it was DHs grandads name and he didn’t get on well with him unfortunately!. You could always shorten it to Jack

VerbeenaBeeks · 02/11/2018 11:03

You could call him Finn John. But it may be an issue if he gets fat

Grin That took far too long to twig, I was like "eh?" for a minute. I clearly need far more caffeine Blush Grin

Anyway! I think John's a great name, it's a strong classic.
Some age like Clive or Kevin, but John's great and due a comeback I reckon.

LBOCS2 · 02/11/2018 11:12

I know a 5yo Jonathan and a 6yo John. It's not in fashion at the moment but it's not unfashionable, if you see what I mean. I think it's a good solid name.

mollysmammy · 02/11/2018 11:14

I like it - if I were to have had a boy he would have been James Ernest (Ernest after my Grandad) which apparently is outdated. DD is Molly Elizabeth (Elizabeth after her great Nana) which my Dad stated was old fashioned. We have lots of Ruby's, Ava's, Summer's Mia's etc. In her school. Names go in and out of fashion DD has a friend who's Albert which is quite old fashioned.

WhiteLillie · 02/11/2018 12:51

I like good solid traditional names... we have a Nicholas (aged 2) and a Patrick (aged 1)

They both really suit their names, and we've never met any others in that age range so far! (which I see as a good thing?)

QueenofStella · 02/11/2018 12:59

It’s lovely - and will stand the test of time (for example how many 30-ish year old Kylies and Charlenes are about?). Go for it - and congrats on your pregnancy Smile

greendale17 · 02/11/2018 13:09

Yawn, what a boring name
