To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

John is DS(12) middle name after my Dad, I love it.

midsomermurderess · 01/11/2018 15:32

It's an excellent name. As other have said, solid, timeless.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 01/11/2018 15:32

I like John. I'd use it. Perfectly smart name that suits all sorts of future possibilities!

BlueBug45 · 01/11/2018 15:33

@OatsBeansBarley why? The Georges I know and met don't think their name is from a time warp like the Garrys and Kevins.

@recklessruby all those girls names are old lady names - though to be fair the old ladies I knew called those names are dead.

Theknacktoflying · 01/11/2018 15:34

As long as your surname isn’t Lewis...

We just need a Matthew to complete our set of male names ....

sweetkitty · 01/11/2018 15:37

Go for it I know one John compared to the Zacks/Finleys/Cody/Kaydens/Lucas’

anniegranny · 01/11/2018 15:38

Or Jon, or Jonathan?

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:39

He'd be 50 now and the name was at a low point in popularity. He was named for his grandad: it wasn't a cool name of the era, you had to have a reason for it.
I felt pity because I was an idiot teen who though Gary was normal.
(Just checked via graph on internet which showed it reached its nadir round 1974.)

Limensoda · 01/11/2018 15:40

Hopefully it will become popular again but I was given a name which was really old fashioned when I was born because it was my grandmother's name. It was obviously very fashionable when she was born. I got teased and hated it but it's creeping back into popularity now.

lilyblue5 · 01/11/2018 15:40

My sons middle name is John, go for it!

Pigflewpast · 01/11/2018 15:41

I know a couple of child Jonathans who are known as Jonnie, or Jonty, but loads of Finn / Finley. No Johns under 20. I’d go John or Jonathan, Finn will be of its time whereas John is classic

Pebblespony · 01/11/2018 15:43

Good choice OP. I'm due in 2019 too and if it's a boy, we're going with John too.

TubeTop · 01/11/2018 15:43

Finn is too current and will severely date. John in timeless.

Caselgarcia · 01/11/2018 15:43

My friends granny always said traditional names that had been used for Kings and Queens would always be classic and timeless. There was a king John so yes, not sure about Ethelred or Canute though....

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 01/11/2018 15:45

I love John, and would use it for a second DS in a heartbeat.

pickleface · 01/11/2018 15:51

I thought about it. Wish I'd used it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/11/2018 15:53

John is a lovely name. Go for it, OP!

Charolais · 01/11/2018 15:54

'Fin' in French is 'end'. It is also faddish. John is a much better name.

errorerrorerror · 01/11/2018 15:55

It’s a lovely name.

Amongst all the newish names (won’t mention them in case I offend anyone Grin) it’s a really solid name

WhenDoISleep · 01/11/2018 15:58

Strong, solid traditional name. DS2 has Paul as a middle name (after my DF), which I put in the same category.

MotherOfDragonite · 01/11/2018 15:58

Wonderful name.

StaySafe · 01/11/2018 16:02

I know two people named John, both very creative and successful which may be why i think it is a good name.

bigKiteFlying · 01/11/2018 16:04

It's funny I can't think of one John my own children's age.

I like it though wouldn't have got past DH who has such a common traditional name there were 6 other boys in his primary school class with the same name. It was an odd class all round though - very few names across the whole class boys and girls.

Missingstreetlife · 01/11/2018 16:04

Jack is nickname for john

Jules856 · 01/11/2018 16:04

I like it
