To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

I know a John in his 20s and I also met a baby John the other week. I think it is a lovely name.

ThriftyMcThrifty · 01/11/2018 17:31

I’m pregnant and John is on our list, so I think you are bang on trend! I did like jack but know so many, and I already have a Leo.

Allthewaves · 01/11/2018 17:32

John is fine and there won't be a hoard of them in his class

formerbabe · 01/11/2018 17:33

I was just thinking the other day that John is definitely due a comeback.

Allice · 01/11/2018 17:35

I work at a school, 2.5 to 6th form and we have a John, a Johnny and a Jonathan, all nice boys

Justforonequestion · 01/11/2018 17:36

My son is called John- he's 11. There aren't many of them around these days. If you ever look at a graph of name popularity you'll see that John was the number 1 name by far for about 1000 years then just dropped off a cliff. So strange how fashions change.

Anyway, we chose it for family reasons but also because it's a classic, solid name with a huge history behind it. I love it.

Armchairanarchist · 01/11/2018 17:39

DH is called John, he uses his middle name instead because he hates that a John is another name for a toilet and a creep who uses prostitutes.

CC4490 · 01/11/2018 17:41

I like it, if I had another DS I'd go with John.

Strangely enough my dad and his brother are John and Finn!

PineappleTart · 01/11/2018 17:41

John is a lovely name. I know several and it's one of the names I would use given the opportunity. It's a solid timeless name good for cute little ones as well as adults.

sheldonstwin · 01/11/2018 17:44

Solid and traditional - great name!

DuckofDoom · 01/11/2018 17:55

One of my favourite ever pupils was called John. Absolutely lovely kid. He’s about 11 now and the youngest John I know.

Absolutely use it. It’s due a revival, in my opinion

catinboots9 · 01/11/2018 18:01

Love it

RuthW · 01/11/2018 18:04

Lovely name. Love Jonathan more. Never Johnny as it's a condom.

blackteasplease · 01/11/2018 18:11

How could John possibly be wrong?

There is a Paul in ds' class which seems so unusual these days but actually much nicer than a lot of more " original" names.

princessmum1 · 01/11/2018 18:27

I know a 3 year old John. Always been called ‘John John’ as his mum doesn’t like Johnny. It suits him and no ones ever thought it was weird since!

entropynow · 01/11/2018 18:33

DH's name so I'm biased. Why would anyone think it's a problem?

sandalsinthebin · 01/11/2018 18:40

Weird I was only thinking the other day that John will make a comeback soon. I love John-Paul and other double barrelled John- names. And I always loved John-boy Walton he was so reliable (but handsome too)

HildaZelda · 01/11/2018 18:49

Go for it. John is a classic name, suits all age groups and will never date. John at 80 sounds just as good as John at 8. Unlike a lot of the more 'modern' names.

icebearforpresident · 01/11/2018 18:55

It was never on my list as there’s a least 3 on each side on my family and they’re all bit mad! I do associate it as being a bit of an old mans name but there’s 1 in DD’s reception class this year (compared to 3 jacks and 2 jays) and one in my 3 year olds playgroup. It’s definitely making a come back.

Second the ‘unless your surname is smith’ comment though (and I say that as a mrs Smith).

RoboticSealpup · 01/11/2018 19:13

It's a really nice name.

Theworldisfullofgs · 01/11/2018 19:14

Great name.

Don't call him Johnnie!

sandalsinthebin · 01/11/2018 19:14

It’s a super- solid name eg John Snow

GloomyMonday · 01/11/2018 19:15

Johnny is a condom, but John is a lovely classic name. I like Jonathon too.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 01/11/2018 19:22

I like John.

But I’ve got a kid called Terry (he’s 10) and said if I ever had another boy he’d be Stanley.....so I’m all for old man chic when it comes to names.

(You wouldn’t bat an eyelid if your bank manager was called Terry though 😆)

sayanythingelse · 01/11/2018 19:22

Do it. All the old man names (Albert, Frank, etc) have come back into fashion, so it's only a matter of time before the middle aged man names like John come back.

I'm in my early 30s and my name was a very popular name amongst women who are now in their 50s-60s. I've had piss taken out of my loads for my "middle aged woman name" but I'm just biding my time until it's popular again Grin
