To name our son (who will be born in 2019) John?

Apparently it's an unreasonable choice in this day and age?? I thought it was sweet. He could become Johnny if it needs to be "cuter" while he is little.

Our other choice was just Finn.

It might offend some people as there was a John in the bible!

That mentality would rule out a lot of names....

Singlenotsingle · 01/11/2018 19:33

I liked John but ended up with Jonathan. Everyone but me calls him Jon.

TabbyMumz · 01/11/2018 19:34

Yes..believe Simon was from the bible too! Why should No One name their child after a name that's in the bible?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 01/11/2018 19:35

It might offend some people as there was a John in the bible!

What??? Bizarre comment. Don't understand that at all. If it does offend anyone for that reason, then that's their tough shit. Loads of names are biblical in origin.

Anyway, yes, I'm married to a very lovely John, and think the name could do with a revival.

Piggyhoolier · 01/11/2018 19:48

Can’t go wrong with John. Can take him from baby to man and would fit in any profession or job. It’s timeless and classless and also used by many cultures and ethnicities. Winner.

MsNowtyBach · 01/11/2018 19:53

I love it. There are hardly any little Johns and it is a strong name for a man and very sweet on a boy.

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2018 19:54

I really like John, and think it's definitely due a revival. Uncle-type names do seem to be making a comeback - in Dd's Y4 class last year, there was - Bruce, Brian, Hugh and 2x Ian. Elsewhere in the area, I know of a Jeffrey and a Richard. Good, solid names!

I agree with pp about Finn - perfectly nice name, but around here you just can't move for Finns in the 5-18 age bracket.

JaiNotJay · 01/11/2018 19:55

YANBU, unless you're my sister in which case no you can't use it as I still might one day! Wink

AgentCooper · 01/11/2018 19:57

My DH is a John and we're always saying you never get baby Johns anymore, and how cute a wee baby John would be!

I say do it. I much prefer it to Finn, you can't move for them round here.

Namechange8471 · 01/11/2018 19:58

I have a brother named John and one named Johnathan

I'm also called Joanne (female equivalent)

😂

MorningsEleven · 01/11/2018 20:03

John is a proper name, I like it. I have two friends called Johnny and they are both kind, thoughtful, clever, funny, articulate, strong and selfless.

Alfie190 · 01/11/2018 20:03

John is timeless.

Namechangemum100 · 01/11/2018 20:07

It's a lovely name.

I know lots of babies with really classic names and they are lovely. For example I know an Eric and a Peter who are both under 2.

Storminateacup74 · 01/11/2018 20:12

My son is 10 and has 2 in his class I like it!!!Classic but not your normal William, Jack, James etc

apostropheuse · 01/11/2018 20:12

One of my brothers is John. He's the kindest, most laid-back gentle person you could meet. One of life's true gentlemen and liked by everyone. So, I associate the name with good people.

Lovely name.

IRememberSoIDo · 01/11/2018 20:16

Good solid name. There's a John aged about 8/9 my kids know from after school, it's nice to see it on a young person. My dad and all men before him in his family were John. Actually my dad was called jack by close family as a child but as an adult called himself by his proper name. Think jack has been so popular over the last decade it's time to bring back the Johns!

FallingOffALog · 02/11/2018 06:49

My son is called John, he is 11

Ohheyyy · 02/11/2018 06:54

I prefer John to Finn just foe the pure reason that there are so many Finns around now.

(I honestly don't mean to cause offence to anyone whose child is called Finn).

NicoAndTheNiners · 02/11/2018 07:01

I like John. I also love Jonty which is similar.

dinodiva · 02/11/2018 07:01

I have a small Jonathan. I like that he can be Jon, or Jonny (we call him all 3). I haven’t come across another one either.

Awrite · 02/11/2018 07:10

Dd would have been John, nn Johnny had she been a boy. She's 13.

Choose a different name for ds as he just wasn't a John. Still have a little regret that I didn't go for it. It's such a great name.

Ignore the naysayers.

EmUntitled · 02/11/2018 07:10

John is still in the top 150 names given to babies in the UK (or it was in 2017 at least) so you're not the only one who likes it.

It's not my cup of tea but its a good name, clearly pronounced and spelt, historical and classic, plenty of nickname options etc. Ticks all the boxes for me.

Awrite · 02/11/2018 07:10

Chose a different name ...

serenmoon · 02/11/2018 07:14

My friend has three boys called John, David and Michael. She only ever gets compliments

Amicompletelyinsane · 02/11/2018 07:19

I have good solid classic names, I have a Michael john tho so completely bias
