Aurora or sapphire?

Please help me decide. Was a thread that I still believe is running about unique names and how awful they are and so on.

I want to avoid that. My last two names are Aurora and sapphire.
Please help me decide one.

And honest thoughts before it's to late to turn back.

Brutal honest opinions. Thanks Smile

Aurora.

I don’t like precious gem names at all. They all sound tacky to me.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/10/2018 14:43

I think Aurora is very pretty.

I am not a fan of Sapphire at all!

Two very different types of names...

WisestIsShe · 26/10/2018 14:43

Aurora

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/10/2018 14:44

Aurora is a lovely name.

Ennirem · 26/10/2018 14:46

I usually choose names on their 'nicknameability'. I like the kid to have at least a couple of options open to them in case they don't like the long form.

Sapphire you could have Saffie, I suppose... but you're pretty stuck with Aurora (Rory???)

JosellaPlayton · 26/10/2018 14:46

Honestly, I like either. But Aurora is x1000 less bad than Sapphire.

Allthewaves · 26/10/2018 14:47

Aurora. Sapphire is awful

LaDameAuxLicornes · 26/10/2018 14:47

Aurora is very pretty. Sapphire sounds like a made-up name to me, and so a bit try-hard somehow.

JupiterBelle · 26/10/2018 14:47

They both sound pretty bad to me. But that’s my taste and you might not like my kids names.

What nicknames might they end up with and which of those do you prefer?

Blanchedupetitpois · 26/10/2018 14:47

I think Sapphire sounds really tacky, sorry! But Aurora is pretty (if slightly hard to live up to)

Thundercracker · 26/10/2018 14:49

Aurora over Sapphire.

OhDoGrowUp · 26/10/2018 14:49

I like Aurora, but I think it's a bit of a mouthful..? I'd go with Sapphire. They're both a bit marmite, so you won't get all lovely opinions on here. I like them both equally though. Both nice and a bit hippy, but I like hippy!

OhDoGrowUp · 26/10/2018 14:49

Aurora can be shortened to Rory though, which I quite like.

3ChangingForNow · 26/10/2018 14:50

Sapphire is lovely. Aurora is boring.

Bambamber · 26/10/2018 14:50

I have an unusual pet called sapphire. We shorten it to 'sapphs. I think auorora is the better of the 2 but I'm not a fan of either. I think uncommon names are uncommon for a reason

GeoffreysCat · 26/10/2018 14:50

If you like Sapphire but are worried about it being too way out then how about Sophia? A similar sound but an accepted name.

MoveOnTheCards · 26/10/2018 14:51

Sapphire sounds like a stripper.

Aurora, would depend on your surname. Anything unusual/‘exotic’ would work better than, say, Smith.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 26/10/2018 14:51

Oh God .

Sorry, not dissing your choices but a memory popped up.

I knew an Aurora once upon a time , one of a circle of friends . Not overly close to her but she was nice enough.
ONLY issue was , she picked up the nickname Aurora the Whore !

I am not saying this may occur with yours , just that it DID with the one I knew .

canyouhearthedrums · 26/10/2018 14:51

Honestly, Aurora is the new Niveah in certain parts. Always nicknamed Princess Aurora and wearing a tiara. Sapphire at least can go by Saffie.

SleepWarrior · 26/10/2018 14:52

I think Aurora will make a better transition to a non-embarrassing grown up name.

There are definitely people that could pull off Sapphire very well, and I don't dislike it as a name, but it's a very extrovert and glamorous name in my opinion.

BellMcEnd · 26/10/2018 14:52

I love Sapphire. I also really like Emerald and Topaz.

CherryValance · 26/10/2018 14:53

To be honest they both sound a little Disney Princess/My Little Pony/Wiccan author to me, but I wouldn't comment negatively in real life. I don't know why Ruby and Pearl escape these connotations and Sapphire doesn't, but I think Sapphire is better than Aurora. Saffy is a cute enough day to day nickname.

Chrystal1982 · 26/10/2018 14:55

Aurora

MakeAHouseAHome · 26/10/2018 14:56

Honestly both are horrible! There is no good choice here...

teaandtoast · 26/10/2018 14:57

Of the two, I'd go with Sapphire, sorry MN 😂.

Aurora I find quite hard on the ear and perhaps for little kids to say? I really dislike Rory as a nickname, but Saffy's fine.
