How much do you eat in a day?

user1486250399 · 04/10/2018 13:05

I may be very unreasonable to ask this... and nosey... but I need to lose a bit of weight and I wonder if I tend to eat more or less than other people. My husband seems to eat very little really but is slightly overweight.

So, if you want to, hit me with your HONEST food diary for today/yesterday/a typical day.

I’m currently trying to lose weight (2lbs down!) so eating around 1200 cals a day. But I’ve been quite annoyed that I’ve been getting fatter despite eating a pretty healthy balanced diet - turns out that whilst that’s true, I was still eating more calories than I needed. I’ve worked out my TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is only about 1600kcal, as I’m short and pretty sedentary, so need a good deficit on that to lose weight. Comparing yourself to others without knowing their TDEE/height/weight will be completely unhelpful for you. Have a google to find yours.

Today so far:
small bowl of porridge
tea and coffee

tin of soup with two thick slices of wholemeal toast and butter
an apple

Later I'll have chill con carne with brown rice and probably a small kitkat and a bag of ready salted crisps. Maybe another apple or an orange too. I hope I won't have the snacks but most days I do.

I am two stone overweight. I exercise 3-5 times per week but otherwise have a very sedentary job.

Normal day (I’m aware my diet is pure shite)

Skip breakfast
Some Oreos and a black coffee mid morning
Lunch is always left overs with a side of steamed veg
Dinner is usually something like chickpea curry/stir fry/ fried rice/pasta with various sauces/fajitas
Don’t really snack but I am partial to nice bread
I’m vegan so it’s pretty low calorie by default in the main.

Yesterday was:
Breakfast: Banana, coffee with skimmed milk and 100ml orange juice

Lunch: Homemade tomato soup; ham, cheese and quark on a small wholemeal bread roll, can of diet coke
Snacks: 1 chocolate biscuit, 2 tangerines, coffee with skimmed milk
Dinner: Spaghetti bolognaise (homemade)
Supper: Cup of tea with skimmed milk

Quite a good day snack-wise but that was because I was busy. Often there will be another couple of choccie biscuits, and maybe a yoghurt or a rice krispy square thing

I eat salmon for breakfast with egg or rice. Just a small rice bowl full.

Lunch is usually a big salad with some sort of protein, either egg or fish.

Dinner is a big meal, curry with rice or pasta etc.

I don’t snack, don’t double carb and I go for a run every morning and do yoga every evening.

Mon-Fri - 1200 cals max (weekends are a bit more relaxed). I avoid refined carbs as much as possible. All food is weighed and tracked using MFP.

Breakfast - 2 eggs scrambled with smoked salmon. Or 3 rashers streaky bacon with the eggs.

Snack: 20g nuts.

Lunch: homemade salad (e.g. chicken/avocado/feta). Turkey burger made with 100g lean turkey mince served with fried mushrooms/peppers/onions. Lettuce wraps with tuna salad inside.

Snack: Nakd bar or similar. Greek yoghurt with berries and tiny drizzle of honey.

Dinner: salmon/sea bass/trout fillet with lots of veg. Steak with veggies. Grilled chicken. Homemade curry.

Evening snack: small amount of dark chocolate.

Breakfast. Porridge made with water and a banana or Shreddies with semi skimmed milk.
Lunch. Chicken with a colourful salad or soup and wholemeal bread.
Dinner. Fish, or chicken, with roasted Mediterranean vegetables or steamed carrot, cabbage and a few new potatoes.

That's my usual kind of diet but some days I will have less healthy meals.
Snacks are fruit or nuts or a few biscuits.
Drinks...water, tea and twice a week a few glasses of red wine.

Totally agree. You can expect to get message from people who will tell you what they eat on a good day and forget the not so good ones.

You will also get people who have very different statitstics to you.

I would never count my calories intake and burnt on a day basis because its unrealistic. Much better to do so on a weekly basis or bi-weekly.

My average dayly burn is about 2000 calories so try to stick to 14,000 calories a week, but one day might be 1600 another 2400.

I'm 9.5 stone which is about right for my height of 5.5.
Most days I eat.

Porridge or cereal and weigh the correct amount. An orange.

Lunch egg on toast and a fun size twix. An apple.

Dinner will be a piece of protine like chicken, salmon or pork. Half a plate of veg or salad. Piece of fruit.

In the evening il have a pudding of a slice of cake, chocolate bar or 4 biscuits.

I don't loose or gain any weight this way and I exercise for at least a hour a day. Dog walking, running or weights.

One day a week like on a saturday I eat whatever I like such as a Chinese or meal out and have which ever chocolate or sweets I want.

I drink about 6 hot drinks a day and loads of water.

Best of luck with your loss.

Have you heard the advice 'eat food. Many plants. Not too much'?

Avoid processed crap (I include slimfast and whatever overpriced powdered protein crap people buy now in that - btw whey powder is an industrial by-product, they used to put it in animal feed now they sell it for ££££ to gormless people)
Eat a lot of veg, preferably not starchy ones
Don't eat too much of anything

Diets don't work. Try reading this

Breakfast - two slices wholemeal toast with nut butter, two satsumas

Lunch - home made haddock fishcakes (grilled not fried) salad no dressing and

Supper - home made meatballs with wholemeal pasta and salad on the side. Extra veg in meatball sauce (grated carrot and courgette for bulk, chunky chopped peppers and mushrooms), fruit for pudding.

Snacks are always fruit or veg, never crisps, no bread after breakfast and only small portions of carbs with my evening meal. I run with the dog for 60 minutes most mornings and manage 4/5 gym visits weekly.

I'm doing Slimming World at the moment and have lost 10lbs since August. Current BMI is around 22. Have about another six or eight pounds to lose until I'm back at my 'ideal' weight.

Food today:

Breakfast:

2 weetabix, skimmed or semi skimmed milk, berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries).

Snack - grapes and a hifi (cereal) bar

Lunch - last night's leftover beef chilli (lean beef, tomato, black beans, courgette, pepper) and rice

Dinner - roast sweet potato, salad, baked beans, goats cheese.

Biggest thing for me for weight loss is cutting way back on bread (I miss bagels), cutting out cakes, biscuits and chocolate (I really miss the giant chocolate buttons) and limiting alcohol (which also sucks). Meal planning is pretty vital.

I try to exercise at least three times per week at the gym, and walk around 4 miles a day to and from work.

Vey few people eat like the above every day. Either they’re on a New fad diet or they’re showing you their best days they’re proud of.

For example my best day is green smoothie fish salad and chicken broccoli and sweet potato, with lots of water. All
Last week was: almond crossaint, cappuccino, sausage and cheese sandwich and chips, bar chocolate and chicken curry and rice or similar. That’s normal

Gardengirl33 · 04/10/2018 13:37

B - 1 egg omelette on a toasted rye slice
Snack - fruit, normally apple
L - try to have a salad with ham/chicken/tuna but do have pasta salad or sandwich sometimes
Snack - cereal bar (alpen light)
D - gammon or chicken in a veg stew or curry, or a steak with mushrooms/spinach/leeks lightly sauteed with frylite.
Low/no fat yoghurt, low sugar homemade fruitcake
Coffe is decaf and only milk or almond milk in morn, black or fruit/herbal teas rest of day help you feel fuller. Sometimes a diet coke
I am maintaining at mo, but if I dropped all pasta, rice butties etc and I max on fruit veg n protein I can lose. Plus I need more exercise. I learned that my body is less hungry with protein ie egg first thing, cereals do nothing for me it seems, just starving by 1030!
I worked this out on slimming world - I can eat real food, no faddy diets etc.
Good luck with any weight loss plan!
