How much do you eat in a day?

user1486250399 · 04/10/2018 13:05

I may be very unreasonable to ask this... and nosey... but I need to lose a bit of weight and I wonder if I tend to eat more or less than other people. My husband seems to eat very little really but is slightly overweight.

So, if you want to, hit me with your HONEST food diary for today/yesterday/a typical day.

Breakfast -Big bowl of porridge with berries and a blob of yoghurt or 2 scrambled eggs on wholemeal bread during the week.
Weekends avocado and poached eggs on toast or the occasional full English as a treat.
Mid morning- an apple and a handful of nuts whilst driving around.
Lunch - Examples are homemade soup and a piece of bread or a couple of ryvitas.Or mackerel salad.Or tuna pitta with salad.
Mid afternoon a milky coffee and a couple of oat cakes.Or 2/3 times a week a piece of cake or a doughnut .
Dinner -something homemade like chilli and brown rice, veggie curry and rice,a piece of fish with veg and sweet potato wedges,a shepherds pie or chicken pie with loads of green veg.Or in summer a big salad with salmon or feta.
In the evening usually a piece of fruit or some kiwi or papaya chopped into some yoghurt.Very occasionally if hungry a bowl of raisin wheatsor shreddies before bed.
I absolutely love my food but I do have a physical job, plus do loads of gardening and walk my dogs a lot.I've inherited my mum's petite build luckily for me,but do consider that when I retire or become older and more sedentary I will have to watch what I eat more. But for now if I'm hungry I eat. But I prefer to graze healthily (mainly!)rather than go hours without anything.

averageisgood · 04/10/2018 13:41

Usually porridge with half milk, half water for breakfast.
Lunch today was chicken salad, with lots of mixed leaves and olive oil. Followed by handful of brazil nuts

Dinner will chicken curry(home made) with rice and broccoli
Then maybe a couple of glasses of wine later.
I don't know how many calories, but I have been for a 10km run this morning

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 04/10/2018 13:41

No breakfast here. Get in at lunch time and eat everything in sight - today is gnocchi with butter, but a better day may involve a vegetable-based home made soup. I may have a few biscuits or a packet of crisps later if I can motivate myself to go to tesco. For tea, probably a shepherd's pie with quorn and whatever vegetables I can find in the fridge - I'm not a vegetarian but I cook for one, and I'm too lazy to prepare multiple versions! I only drink black coffee and water (or the occasional half bottle of ale if the other half is going in a pie).

On the positive side, I do ride multiple horses a day (a good deal of fast work - not just quiet hacking!) and a lot of donkey work on the yard. I walk or run with the dogs every day, and my job, though in principle sedentary, is peripatetic which helps a bit.

boomboo · 04/10/2018 13:45

minniebow · 04/10/2018 13:46

I alternate stuff on different days but try and aim for around 1200 calories as I’m on a big shred. Need to lose 2 stone I stupidly put back on!

Breakfast - Weetabix, fruit
Snack - Protein bar after a workout
Lunch - Cooked chicken breast and salad
Dinner - Rice, mushrooms, broccoli, asparagus, mangetout and babycorn

I try and eat as much fruit and veg as possible and drink 2-3 litres of water a day

Gammeldragz · 04/10/2018 13:46

Yesterday
Breakfast - yoghurt, cream and raspberries.
Lunch - salad with meat and cheese and mayo
Dinner - Cauliflower, courgette and chicken baked in a cream and cheese sauce.

Today
Brunch - Cauliflower cheese and bacon.
Snack - two squares of dark chocolate and a handful of chili peanuts.
Dinner - aubergine and Bolognese bake with mozzarella.

I'm low carb so these are my good days. When I stick to it I either lose or maintain depending on portion sizes, snacking and exercise.

MaMisled · 04/10/2018 13:53

Yesterday. Wholewheat muffin, 50g blueberries, pumpkin seeds and shredded coconut and a Muller light on top. Pitta bread, half tub cottage cheese, salad,;low Cal crisps, 2 apples, 2 satsumas, kiwi, plum and 2 apricots. Rump steak, salad with 30g feta. Sugar free jelly, 20g galia melon, weight watchers from age frais. 2 plums, 3 apricots, apple and orange. 10 sugar free sweets. 12 coffees with skim milk and sweetener. Two cans diet coke.

HalfBloodPrincess · 04/10/2018 13:54

Breakfast - 1 piece of cheese on toast

Lunch - 2 sausages in a sandwich with brown sauce, and the sweet potato wedges my toddler threw on the floor

Dinner - cauliflower cheese, or if I can’t be arsed to go to Tesco to get the cheese it’ll be (bought) pie and mash with peas and gravy.

3 cups of decaf coffee and gallons of flat Diet Coke (helps with 1st trimester nausea)

I don’t really snack but if I do it would be apples or biscuits.

Pretamum · 04/10/2018 13:58

I'm trying to be healthy at the moment as trying to slim down a little (currently slightly overweight), but I don't starve myself or deprive myself of the food I love. I've reduced my coffee intake to one a day as I like it sweet, and I'm trying to cut down on red meat, as well as incorporate more fruit and veg/fish during the week.
Yesterday:
Breakfast - granola, yoghurt, banana. coffee with 2 sugars
Snack: strawberries and grapes
Lunch: Chicken baguette, salad. coke zero
Dinner: Yoghurt chicken curry with red onion, mint and tomato salad, brown rice. (low fat recipe)
Snack. One choc digestive biscuit. Lots of water throughout the day.

But then the night before we went out for tea and I ended up with lasagna and a chocolate mousse! I also exercise fairly vigorously 3-4 times a week as well as trying to go for a long walk of a couple of kms at the weekend. I think the key to eating healthily and to help lose a bit of weight is to find foods you like that are healthy, rather than only eating something because it's healthy. I hate salads that are made up of lettuce, cucumber, tomato etc, so a plate of that would depress me. But a sweetcorn and black bean salad with a lime, garlic and olive oil dressing is right up my street, so that's what I'll opt for. Work out what flavours you like to eat and go from there.

grace7 · 04/10/2018 14:01

I don't eat breakfast, always a coffee though. If I do it'll be something like a piece of toast or a toasted bagel. For lunch I'll either have a salad / cheese toastie / pasta. then for dinner it'll be something like spaghetti bolognaise / home-made chicken kebab / home made chow mein or if I'm feeling lazy, pizza with wedges. if i have it, i do consume quite a lot of chocolate/biscuits in the evenings though Confused

FurryDogMother · 04/10/2018 14:05

I'm low carbing, so yesterday was:

2 fried duck eggs, 3 rashers bacon
3 slices smoked salmon, cream cheese, 1 slice ham, 3 cherry tomatoes
2 duck breasts, cauliflower, courgettes

today is/will be:

2 fried duck eggs, 3 rashers of bacon
1 Babybel, I x 20g mature Cheddar, 5 radishes, 5 chilli cornichons
Large piece of plaice, pan fried in butter, with capers and cauliflower cheese on the side

I also have 2 x black coffee in the morning and 1 or 2 cups of unsweetened tea later in the day, plus loads of water.

evilharpy · 04/10/2018 14:05

Breakfast is usually either overnight oats with a grated apple and frozen berries, or two weetabix with a banana. I wake up ravenous. Plus coffee.

Lunch is usually a salad, something like lettuce, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, two boiled eggs and a couple of slices of ham. Or an omelette with cheese and mushrooms.

Dinner is something like chilli and rice, pasta with chicken and tomato sauce, maybe broccoli on the side, something home made and vaguely healthy but involving carbs.

I don't snack much but if I do it's probably fruit. I like the occasional bag of monster munch or mini cheddars.

Also coffee or tea throughout the day with a tiny dash of skimmed milk. Mostly drink water but have the odd diet coke.

I've pretty much given up cakes/sweets/biscuits etc and no longer have a sweet tooth at all, and feel better for it.

crochetmonkey74 · 04/10/2018 14:08

I'm overweight and am losing it slowly but today has been a bad day

Breakfast (very early)
Tea with 3 low fat banana bread muffins (small)
Snack
2 x thick wholemeal toast with jam
Lunch
Leftovers - 3 lamb meatballs, 2 small potatoes and peas

None of it is terrible but it's just too many calories.
On a good day, I am low carb low sugar and I love it, but I'm tired with a cold and I cannot face salad

overagain · 04/10/2018 14:09

Currently my diet is appauling, but I'm pregnant and struggling to eat. Today has been better than most to be honest:

B: chocolate milkshake (344 cals)
L: left over shepherds pie (250 cals)
Mr Kipling chocolate slice (139 cals)
D: beef enchiladas (448 cals)
S: apple (80 cals)

Total: 1263 calories.

Yesterday:

B: Cadbury hot chocolate (200 cals)
L: Home made beef and veg broth (186cals)
Crusty roll and butter (230 cals)
D: boursin, 3 hovis biscuits and pear and apple chutney (306cals)
S: unicorn cake, donut (417)

Total: 1339 cals

I have lost 1 stone since getting pregnant, but my diet has started to creep up this last week so my weight has stabilised. I was 2 stone overweight pre-pregnancy. I'm now 7lbs overweight/ 2 stone over a middle BMI.

user1486250399 · 04/10/2018 14:11

Yeah - some of these have got to be on a good day! Surely!
To clarify a couple of things - I'm not looking for diet advice (but thank you to those who have offered) - I don't diet, makes me gain weight! Lol
I just had a baby. Bored of maternity jeans so looking forward to getting gradually back to normal (about a size 10, bmi of 24ish). I'm also breastfeeding so all sense of normal appetite has slightly gone out the window for me - I think my diet is pretty bad at the moment but wanted to see how normal it is.
The PP who said 'you first' - good point!
Me yesterday:
2 weetabix with ss milk
1 banana
1 pumpkin spiced latte
1 coffee
1 tea
1 cammomile tea
1 x large plate of curried vegetables
About a handful of pasta bolognaise (homemade - brown pasta, daughters leftovers)
1 packet of cheese and onion crisps
1 nectarine
Nuggets and chips
Peanut m&ms (2 handfuls)
3 jaffa cakes

I def have a sugar addiction!!!

About 1600 calories, yes I am trying to lose weight. If I eat less than this I give up easily. Minimum daily calorie burn is 2,200 calories.

Today so far I've had a banana smoothie, a noodle pot from Itsu and some fruit. Not sure what I'll have for dinner yet.

user1486250399 · 04/10/2018 14:13

And thank you to everyone who replied - I noticed after I posted that there is a similar active thread so I didn't think anyone would comment - thank you for indulging me :)

BlackInk · 04/10/2018 14:15

I'm about 5ft 7in, weigh around 9 stone, fairly sedentary job, no formal exercise but walk (fast) quite a lot and am generally busy. Vegetarian.

Average weekday:

B: Pot of plain live yoghurt with handful of granola or cinnamon porridge sachet.

S: Couple of biscuits or an apple or some nuts.

L: Homemade veg soup with buttered toast or smallish portion of leftovers from tea the night before.

S: Bar of chocolate.

T: Spinach, peas and cheese pasta or veg stirfry or veg and coconut curry or Spanish omelette or new potatoes with veggie burger and broccoli, etc.

I drink a few cups of normal tea with milk each day, usually a coffee at some point, a few cups of ginger tea, a bit of water and a small glass of wine most evenings.

Frouby · 04/10/2018 14:17

Mon to friday I have a sandwich on wholemeal bread and usually a bag of crisps for lunch. Usually ham or tuna salad or a ploughmans type sandwhich. Homemade though, not shop bought.

Dinner will be a homecooked something. Tonight it will be beef stew and a couple of dumplings. Last night it was homemade chinese chicken curry and rice, the night before spag bol.

Most meals are homecooked. We have a takeaway friday nights, usually indian.

Saturday and Sunday I have brunch instead of lunch. We have chickens so usually egg based. Then DH cooks saturday, it's either a naice ready meal from M and S or steak. Sunday I tend to do a roast.

I rarely snack or pick. We usually have pudding on Sunday.

cheesefield · 04/10/2018 14:18

An average weekday:

B - Either porridge or scrambled eggs. Coffee.

L - Salad with hoummous and chicken or with prawns. Or soup and crusty roll.

D - Chicken breast, baked potato and salad. Or spag bol. If it's a weekend maybe a pizza or steak with salad and sweet potato fries, and maybe pudding once a week.

Red wine is my kryptonite and I would probably weigh a stone less if I gave it up.

I cycle 16 miles to work M-F - 8m each direction. I'm 5ft 3 and 9st 10.

lifechangesforever · 04/10/2018 14:19

Yesterday:
Breakfast - 3 egg omelette with Quorn ham, spinach and fat free cottage cheese. Sugar free energy drink
Lunch - Plate of random: Lettuce, beetroot, tomato, Quorn sliced chicken, half an avocado, 25g feta cheese, slice ww bread
Dinner - white fish, mashed potato & asparagus
Snack - salted caramel fibre one bar & some Pom bears

Today:
Breakfast - Grenade carb killa protein shake & sugar free energy drink
Lunch - 2 slices WW bread topped with 3 boiled eggs
Dinner - will be Quorn sausage & bean casserole with a jacket potato
Snacks - fibre one bar

Currently following weight watchers as I needed to switch the diet up a bit from calorie counting but essentially, you need to work out what how much of a calorie deficit you need to lose weight.

ArianwenTheAstronaut · 04/10/2018 14:20

I am not overweight but I do eat too much. I’m about to start low(ish) carb, (so like low carb bootcamp, but including some healthy carbs like pulses and the occasional potato), as I need to stop overeating and have found low carb quite good for controlling appetite.

Today I’ve eaten;

Three naice sausages and about half a baguette with ketchup and I think five or six mini tiffin bites Blush. That’s it so far, plus a massive black coffee and water. I’m planning to have lentil soup for dinner and then some berries with Greek yoghurt.

adaisy1394 · 04/10/2018 14:24

No brekkie for me - just black coffee

Mid morning snack - usually cereal bar and apple or some lentil crisps

Lunch - leftovers from previous evening / cous cous / soup and roll

Afternoon Snack - 2 of either Biscuit / Babybel/ Dried mango/ crisps when I get home

Dinner - Something like curry rice and veg / Chilli rice and veg / Chicken potatoes and veg/ pasta/ Biryani/ Shepards pie (I always have veg on the side and always go back for seconds) Jelly & Fruit for pud

Evening Snack - Biscuits/ few squares of dark choc/ toast with butter and marmite if I'm really hungry

Will drink around 2L of water and have 3 or 4 cups of tea with semi skimmed milk per day too, very rarely drink alcohol on an average day, probably have 3 or 4 wines once every couple of months when catching up with friends

Am currently 10st 5lbs but would like to lose 10lbs despite being right in the middle of my healthy BMI so planning to cut snacks and lunchtime carbs out. On a weekend I eat more than the above if I'm in the house as I'm a bored eater :). I used to do a lot more exercise than I do now (ran ultra marathon in July so used to eat the above x3 to keep up with the training demands) but I currently do 2x HIIT classes, 1x Yoga class, a park run and a very long walk per week.

adaisy1394 · 04/10/2018 14:25

Forgot to note, my average calories at the mo is probe around 1700 -1900 but on weekend more like 2000. I'm a greedy lass.

SinglePringle · 04/10/2018 14:28

The following is a typical day for me. I’m pretty controlled when it comes to food and don’t eat chocolate, cake, biscuits, sweets etc. I don’t have a sweet tooth. Nor do I eat any refined carbs. I also exercise for an hour every day (cardio and weights)

B: egg white omelette with spinach and a finger sized portion of low fat feta cheese. Coffee with skimmed milk

L: box of sashimi / chicken salad (no dressing other than balsamic vinegar), poke bowl for example. Or half a pot of M&S soup (or similar from Pret)

D: soup with a side of protein such as a chicken breast. I often add lentils or spinach to bought soups. Or a piece of salmon roasted with green vegetables on the side. Or a stir fry (make my own sauces so I can control the sugar / fat content)

Probably have 2 more coffees and a tea every day and I often have a punnet of strawberries or cherry tomatoes on my desk.

I drink 2 litres of water every day and probably have a g&t or two every other day.
