Obviously don’t know the full facts, but the photos
Show the police being pretty heavy handed.

They look Muslim, so presume don’t drink alcohol, they have regularly buy the water from other branches of Tesco.
This behaviour by the police looks like the sort of treatment meted out by racist officers towards African Americans in the US.

I am disgusted by the thuggish behaviour of the police and I hope Mr. Hussain succeeds in his complaint to the PCC.

Couple charged with assault for trying to buy water in Rochdale Tesco

Not strictly true tho is it?

Couple try to buy loads of water they claim is for themselves.
Tesco refuse, which is within their right,
Couplemkicknoff and make fuss until the police get involved at which point something happens and they get arrested for assaulting an officer.

Racmactac · 27/09/2018 15:36

Why on earth were the police called because they wanted to buy lots of water.
I don't get it.

Lydiaatthebarre · 27/09/2018 15:38

Perhaps Tesco were suspicious that the amount they were buying indicated they were selling it on at inflated prices.

SaucyJack · 27/09/2018 15:39

It’s hard to say who’s right or wrong without having had been there, but no- I’m not seeing what you’re seeing from the published photos.

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/09/2018 15:40

From the video it looks like the cops were just there and stepped in when they heard the commotion the pair caused when they were refused more than 10 bottles.

Seems the obvious solution, buy 10... Come back tomorrow, buy another 10...

Racecardriver · 27/09/2018 15:40

It actually reads a bit like it was set up. Video cutting in and out at convenient moments. Not at all believable.

ConferencePear · 27/09/2018 15:40

They have been arrested for assaulting a policeman. This is clearly about more than water.

glintandglide · 27/09/2018 15:41

What does not drinking alcohol have to do with it? God knows why Tesco called them (I hazard a guess it’s because they’re selling the water on?) but that doesn’t excuse assaulting a police officer

BlueBug45 · 27/09/2018 15:41

@Racmactac because they didn't agree to not to buy some many bottles and were challenging the staff.

A friend and I were lucky in a Sainsburys once where they allowed us to buy 2 more bottles than the standard amount of a drink on offer. We only were allowed them because we were extremely polite as there was an issue with the offer. It did help that I offered to put them back on the exact shelves we got them from when we were told we had too many by the manager.

HoleyCoMoley · 27/09/2018 15:41

Why haven't you posted the full facts and not just the photos. They were asked not to buy more than 10 bottles, they didn't like that and he claims his missus drinks 2l a day. Complete over reaction from everyone involved. They were asked to stop filming, it will be on the police bodycam anyway.

PinkHeart5914 · 27/09/2018 15:42

Well your headline is just wrong isn’t it!

They have been charged with assaulting a police officer after they decided to kick off not becuase they tried to buy water

Must be a reason Tesco refused the sale, which any shop can do.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 27/09/2018 15:43

Video cutting in and out at convenient moments.

That was my thinking upon seeing the video. There are so many gaps in it that it does look very deliberate in its editing. Hmm

Buster72 · 27/09/2018 15:43

I really hope police are successful in their prosecution of this person for assault.
Your own description doesn't match the story one little bit.
I can only assume police were called because they created such a scene that store security could not cope.
And what teacher has a water bottle as a trademark.

easyandy101 · 27/09/2018 15:44

You can't get the police to attend your shop when someone is robbing from you yet they're able to come down and escalate a minor thing into a serious charge

Ridiculous

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/09/2018 15:45

I’m pretty sure it will turn out they own a shop and are selling the bottles on. If you really drank that much water yourself you’d buy it in bigger bottles as it would be far more cost effective.

Regardless Tesco can refuse a sale for whatever reason they like.

I do admit though even though they were arguing the toss and called a passing police officer over it does come across like the police were heavy handed. One minute he’s refusing to shut up and it seems like the next minute he’s being wrestled to the ground. So not sure if the camera cut out or panned away and something was missed. Otherwise it seems like an over reaction.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/09/2018 15:46

The police were in Tesco already buying snacks, the man saw them and called them over.

easyandy101 · 27/09/2018 15:46

If anyone can be bothered to read the link you'd know they were there already, they weren't attending for this incident

5Yearplan4000 · 27/09/2018 15:47

Isn’t the fresh Pennine water which comes out of every tap in Rochdale good enough?

DanglyBangly · 27/09/2018 15:48

Obviously don’t know the full facts

And yet:

disgusted by the thuggish behaviour of the police

Don’t you see the contradiction there?

JuicyLucy72 · 27/09/2018 15:48

I think it could of been handled differently and the Police Officer overreacted given the situation.

As someone who lives in the area it surprises me that people have to wait 2/3 days for an officer to attend after a burglary and children are being groomed on the streets but this is treated as a priority incident!

Celebelly · 27/09/2018 15:48

Those bottles are half price at the moment. We bought 10 of them the other day (without reprisals!) as DP loves the strawberry ones.

It's impossible to tell from that article and even the video what actually happened though. The whole thing seems utterly bizarre.

Fatasfook · 27/09/2018 15:48

I regularly buy more than 10 bottles of water from Tesco. This is strange

LilMy33 · 27/09/2018 15:50

It says the police were in store already (responding to another incident? Making enquiries about something else?) and stepped in probably to cool down everyone. They were arrested for assaulting a police officer and an officer has injuries to his face. As the video either keeps cutting out or has been edited (badly).

I fail to see what this couple drinking alcohol or not has anything to do with this. They were told they were not allowed to buy that much water for whatever reason and Tesco has the right to refuse to sell them it. They could have either come back and got some more the next day or taken their business elsewhere.

Celebelly · 27/09/2018 15:51

I'm guessing they were refused as it's on special offer (half price, or is at least at our local Tesco) and there are sometimes limits on how many of one thing you can buy at special offer when it's heavily discounted, although it seems to be an individual store thing in this case.
