Obviously don’t know the full facts, but the photos
Show the police being pretty heavy handed.

They look Muslim, so presume don’t drink alcohol, they have regularly buy the water from other branches of Tesco.
This behaviour by the police looks like the sort of treatment meted out by racist officers towards African Americans in the US.

I am disgusted by the thuggish behaviour of the police and I hope Mr. Hussain succeeds in his complaint to the PCC.

"If you really drank that much water yourself you’d buy it in bigger bottles as it would be far more cost effective." They were 2L bottles of fruit flavoured volvic, I don't believe they come in larger bottles than that! I don't think many drinks do.

She possibly doesn't drink the full 2L, I dunno about others but I frequently have bottles of drink that I drink most of but some is discarded. Teachers do a lot of talking and frequently get sore throats, I've several friends that are teachers and they drink a lot of water at work to try and avoid this, especially at this point in school year when there's loads of bugs flying about.

Even IF they were purchasing them to sell on (which I agree is wrong morally as well as legally though hardly the most profitable way to work, Tesco aren't cheap!), even IF they were being awkward, from looking at the video the Asian man seemed fairly calm certainly not "kicking off" when the police officer hauls off and punches him! That's completely out of order!

My brother is a police officer so I'm very much pro police, but the officers in that video over reached.

I also find it out of order requesting they not video, surely if you're handling things as they should be handled video evidence will be in your favour. Also can they really dictate no videoing on their property as its privately owned? It's a shop, there's no expectation of privacy and they surely have cctv and I've certainly taken video in supermarkets with no issues, seems they didn't want the incident being filmed as then they can do and claim what they like!

I hope the police officers concerned do have cameras that were operating at the time (though why they'd have the right to do do but not the Asian couple I don't know) because I do think they were too heavy handed.

Police several times every day deal with cocky, arrogant chancers. If they can't cope with that they're in the wrong job.

Just watch any of the "reality" shows where police feature, dealing with everything from traffic policing to drug dealers and the officers in them act mostly calmly and professionally, even when being blatantly goaded! That's how they should be. The more irate, aggro a person gets, the calmer you are. There are specific techniques for gaining physical control too - which doesn't include hauling off and punching a guy who isn't fighting you!

"Manchester Police are very "hands on" in general. The difference in the way their teams respond to situations (from what I've seen on The Force) is a world away from other forces." Interesting to know - and no excuse!

Brother works for another northern force.

Anyone assuming they're buying to sell on purely based on the colour of their skin is racist. I do wonder if a white couple would have been similarly challenged?

"I may be getting 5 after putting 2 2s together... But I may see why Tesco said no.." But even if that were the case - how would the checkout operator know?

WomanAKAAdultHumanFemale · 27/09/2018 17:43

Of course they were arrested because of their religion

Yes. That is the sole reason. But the wife shouldn't have been arrested as she drinks two litres of water a day and is very popular at the school where she is a teacher.

PattiStanger · 27/09/2018 17:43

There's too much information missing to make a proper judgement but any shop can refuse to sell anything and if he does run an online shop it's quite possible that he's well known at Tesco for bulk buying special offer products and they are trying to make it fair for other customers.

Better to lose his custom for water than piss of 20 other shoppers who wanted water as part of their weekly shop, couldn't get it and decide not to go to Tesco next time.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/09/2018 17:46

I saw someone in Tesco last week with a large trolley full to the brim with bananas. Nothing else in it and no bannanas leftmost to buy in the shop.

I wonder if he was allowed to buy them all.

Angrybird345 · 27/09/2018 17:47

Sorry but the couple were out of order. They should have left the premises when asked. There is lots of footage missing which I presume is just more stuff to show what idiots they were. Glad they were arrested. Why should people have to deal with idiots like this.

And I don’t agree with a pp about videoing - anyone should have the right not to be filmed and out in a public forum.

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2018 17:48

The store will have CCTV

There's no point in jumping to conclusions about racism or stereotyping, unless it transpires that they let white people break the rules.

Graphista the checkout operators will know the store's policy.

Kelsoooo · 27/09/2018 17:58

Fucks sake.

Tesco is not a PUBLIC place. Nor is ASDA, Morrisons, Zara te al.

Therefore, no. They do not have the right to film or photograph without prior Permission.

It is not “out of order” to request them stop filming. They were CORRECT TO DO SO.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/09/2018 18:00

Hussain is an online retailer.
So many people have jumped to the conclusion that he was going to sell it on. Who on earth buys water online?

So people accusing him of reselling assume he has a convenience store. Racist much?

Angrybird345 · 27/09/2018 18:02

The water in question is on offer in Tesco, half price. Just saying.

glintandglide · 27/09/2018 18:03

Loads of people buy water online. I do every week

Aragog · 27/09/2018 18:03

Who on earth buys water online?

Lots of people do online shopping for groceries and drinks, and not just from specific online supermarket deliveries.

Aragog · 27/09/2018 18:05

The shop is PRIVATE property, which the PUBLIC is invited in to make sure of. They can definitely request that members of the public do not film in there.

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2018 18:11

OMG OP you're making yourself sound very foolish here.

We get it, you're anti police but accusing people of being racist simply because you've never looked on line to see that lots of people buy water from online stores, is almost as ridiculous as starting this thread without even watching the video.

YeTalkShiteHen · 27/09/2018 18:14

Look, there are decent police and shit police like every other job out there.

This time? I can’t see the problem. Bear in mind police are trained to respond to tending up in a restraint hold as it is usually sign of intent to resist/fight back. You can’t see tensed up muscles on film.

I’m also sceptical that the video is so cut and jumpy, if it was a simple as is being made out, why not just show the whole thing unedited?

Also, could all have been avoided if they’d just agreed to buy the limited Tesco told them they could buy.

All this shit because all that water was so important? Talk about first world fucking problems.

YeTalkShiteHen · 27/09/2018 18:15

Tensing not tending

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/09/2018 18:17

So 5 minutes of research and I find this info:

Tesco:
Volvic 1.5l Fruity water 50p
Buy 6 for £3

eBay
Volvic 1.5l fruity water pack of 6
£19.99

Dependant on postage cost that's a profit if £10-16

This is why they'll be flagged in Tesco stores not to sell too many too people..

If Tesco want to enforce silly policies about how much water people can buy, they should bloody well enforce it themselves with their own security guards if necessary.

What shouldn't be happening is police officers getting involved in issues like this. Tesco shouldn't have tried to involve them in the first place, and the police should ever have entertained the idea of becoming involved.

SoupDragon · 27/09/2018 18:22

The man got the police involved, not Tesco

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 27/09/2018 18:22

Sorry you lost me at.... They look Muslim..

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2018 18:22

Milky you haven't read the article properly

Lwmommy · 27/09/2018 18:23

Watched the first minute and a half of the video the wife shot and they were being obnoxious from the start. The security guard asked several times for them to stop filming and the husband was being goady to the extent of shouting over to "a copper" who happened to be in store.

Most supermarkets have maximum amounts that people can buy of special offer products, to stop people selling them on and to ensure that all customers get the opportunity to benefit from the offer.

OftenHangry · 27/09/2018 18:24

If it's the 1.5 litre bottle, it's on offer. And it's absolutely nirmal for shops to impose restrictions per customer. It's online as well. 20 only. Try to buy more...

This has nothing to do eith race, nothing to do with him having online business etc.

This has all to do with someone arguing over a very simple and common rule to a point when police had to act.

I smell lawsuit for some compo from Tesco....

So people accusing him of reselling assume he has a convenience store. Racist much?
🙄 Or maybe they say it because no one else normally goes and buys this amount of water? It's very common for small businesses owned by person of any nationality and ethnicity to go and get these things in sale. So no. Not racist to assume

Want2bSupermum · 27/09/2018 18:27

I live in America and the police Ive dealt with have been nothing but polite and professional. There are 'bad' police but they are terminated, removing them from service.

This couple were idiots. I've purchased large amounts of something on offer at tesco in the past. I would speak to the store manager and wasn't buying off the shelf. I once donated a load of Heinz baked beans on offer to the local food banks. They were amazing, gave a 25% on the products I was buying and delivered directly to the different food banks at no cost.
