What age did your kids wipe their own bums?

DS is 3 3/4 and I still wipe his bum after a poo.
Actually I still often check my school age child too.
Should I be letting him do it himself?
He comes home from nursery regularly with dirty pants / bum and I wonder if I should be letting him do it himself at home so he will get better at it.

They are ‘preparing him for school’.

I will be having another moan but to me a 3 year old still needs help.

My DS is 8 and still gets me to check his bum is clean although he does it and 9/10 it's clean.

Haggisfish · 22/08/2018 19:31

Same as pp. ds is 5.5 yrs and rubbish at bottom wiping. Dd is 8 and much better much still asks me to check.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 22/08/2018 19:31

My niece and nephew both do it themselves at 5 and 2 although 2 year old still gets checked and is almost 3.

Starlighter · 22/08/2018 19:32

4 and 6 yo are perfectly capable now but will often ask me to double check after a ‘messy poo’!! Lucky me!

Haggisfish · 22/08/2018 19:32

I would def be asking nursery to let him try first but to check quickly after. Although my nursery was not great at checking them either.

ipswichwitch · 22/08/2018 19:33

6yo has been doing it himself since 4yo, without any real difficulty (the odd skid mark here and there). My 4.8yo has significant issues with this (being assessed for asd though) and will frequently wipe his bum cheek without getting anywhere near the poopy bits, declare he’s done and pull up his pants, so he needs supervision - god knows how they’ll manage that when he starts school in September, although they have been warned and we are working on it (seems like for the last 10years!)

ILoveMyDressingGown · 22/08/2018 19:35

My 7 y old does it alone now (apart from the really sloppy ones) but I have to be vigilant with my 6 y old because they 'forget' can't be arsed to wipe it.

Lolly86 · 22/08/2018 19:36

My 4 year old has been doing it herself since she was toilet trained so 2.5/3

FlapAttack23 · 22/08/2018 19:37

I have a just 4yo and he still.needs help . Worried as reception say they wont help them but will.give them.instructions on how to wipe themselves.. ive tried to do this at home but he gets frenzied upset and already has a bit of a poo related anxiety... cant bear the idea f accidnetly getting some on his hands etc 😂😂 he goes ablut 45 million times a day.. ok 3 ish.. too so he wont just be able to hold.it.. will they really not help him 😥😨😨

Merryoldgoat · 22/08/2018 19:40

My 5yo now does his own but I check as he’s a bit unreliable. He’s only been doing this in the last 3 months or so.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/08/2018 19:40

About 3, iirc. They were certainly doing it for themselves by the time they started nursery school. Mainly so that no other bugger had to deal with the speadeagled bum in the air pose I'd had to get used to at the top of the stairs (vom)

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 22/08/2018 19:42

DS1 was about 4, DS2 would still have me wipe it if he could; when MIL visits he waggles his bottom in the air and yells "I'm finiiiiiished" and she trots off and wipes it. He's 7 and a half. She'd probably still wipe DH's if she could; she says I'm uncaring to make them so independent and self-sufficient.

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 22/08/2018 19:43

Mine is a month away from being 5 and still needs her bum wiped! I try and get her to do it herself but it never ends well. This is a normal, bright, NT child who is perfectly capable of many things! Oh dear...

Nogodsnomasters · 22/08/2018 19:44

My ds will be 4 next month, has been potty trained since 2.5yrs and still needs his bum cleaned by us. He does occasionally "offer" to help and I let him have a go but he's not reaching it properly at all, it almost actually looks like his arms aren't long enough to reach that far around😂

neversleepagain · 22/08/2018 19:46

My girls are 6 next month and will wipe independently. I check though.

AlphaBravo · 22/08/2018 19:47

Boys can squat and wipe forwards with wet paper and then dry with toilet tissue without much risk. Surely that's easy to teach during potty training?

CookPassBabtridge · 22/08/2018 19:49

This thread is reassuring! My 4.5 yr old still poos in his nappy as soon as I put it on for bed. So yes I still wipe it. I figure he always poos at the same time each day so as long as he's dry for school then it's fine.

apostropheuse · 22/08/2018 19:49

I had mine doing wiping thwir own bums before they started nursery at 3. That was normal back then.

mindutopia · 22/08/2018 19:50

My 5 year old is just starting to ask to do it herself (but I still need to help a bit). I’m pretty sure my mum did mine til I was about 8 though! So I expect to be helping still for awhile.

Queenofthestress · 22/08/2018 19:51

Ds is 5 if oct and wipes himself, DD is 18 months & will wipe after a wee but not a poo because she can't reach

Haworthia · 22/08/2018 19:54

About six and a half Hmm

God, the stand offs we would have: her yelling downstairs (“I’M FINISHED” - still one of my least favourite sentences ever) me yelling back “WIPE YOUR OWN BOTTOM!” She’d refuse and sit on the toilet for upwards of half an hour waiting for me to crack.

Can’t wait for DC2 to toilet train. My children are so stubborn it kills me.

AsteroidAsterix · 22/08/2018 19:59

This thread is blowing my mind a bit. People genuinely help/check NT 7 and 8 year olds?

Kraggle · 22/08/2018 20:00

Dd is 5 1/2 and still shouts down “muuuuuumm, I’m finished, I’ve done a poo, can you come and wipe my bum please?!”

We have started teaching her this holidays but she mostly still refuses to do it herself. Half the time we have to sit upstairs in another room while she has a poo. Bloody kids!

Haworthia · 22/08/2018 20:01

Asteroid - that’s nothing, I remember a thread not too long ago where a woman said she was still wiping her (NT) 12 year old’s bottom. I can’t imagine a secondary school age kid lacking so much embarrassment, but there you go.

SoyDora · 22/08/2018 20:02

For those with school aged children who still need wiping, what do they do at school?
DD1 is 5 in November and starting school next week, she’s been wiping her own for about a year. For the first few months I checked after she’d wiped.
DD2 is just turned 3 and as she will start school next year at just 4 I’ve been starting to make sure she can wipe herself. At the moment I check after she’s done it but probably won’t need to for too much longer.
It’s one of the ‘school prep’ things I’ve been most proactive with as I don’t want them walking round with poo in their bums at school, it would be so sore!
