Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

Weimaraners, labradors, poodles, westies, setters, wolfhounds... plenty popular.

Staffies, flat faced things, and weird designer crosses are not so popular.

noobtheory · 16/08/2018 20:59

A general “perfect breed” doesn’t exist but the perfect breed for you will... if that makes sense.

My perfect breed is the Staffy but I know they get a bad rep :(

Some people on here are really weird about dogs though. Very strange.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 16/08/2018 20:59

I get the impression it's the mash up/mixed up 'designer' dogs people don't like.

gamesconsoler · 16/08/2018 21:00

Haha! 100% true. Obsessed with retired bloody greyhounds.

sexnotgender · 16/08/2018 21:01

What's wrong with greyhounds 🙁

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 21:03

Any rescue dog is the perfect breed - the fact that some rescues have weird criteria to re-home a dog with you is ignored.

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 21:04

@sexnotgender they have got long legs and are lazy.

Singlenotsingle · 16/08/2018 21:04

There was a thread on here a while ago asking about people's dogs. I love mine, a Chinese Crested Powderpuff called Sophie, see pic

papillons :)

Soubriquet · 16/08/2018 21:06

Mumsnet would be able to create a massive argument as to whether they sky was blue or green.

The perfect breed doesn't exist. It's what work with the family that creates the perfect dog

y0rkier0se · 16/08/2018 21:06

You can’t beat a whippet (or two Hmm)

A golden retriever is the perfect breed Grin

Yes, I've actually seen posts saying all pet dogs should be rescue, and all should be neutered.

I got my beautiful, balls still intact, GR from a breeder.

So there.

NoSquirrels · 16/08/2018 21:09

Depends if your breed is a breed, or a 'breed'? Is it a cockerpoo or some other type of 'poo'?

Or a flat-faced breed like a pug etc?

I basically love all dogs, so I am non-judgy and happy to see and fuss anything from a tiny Chi to a massive Wolfhound. Apart from the flat-faced thing, which I am judgy about, I admit. Those dogs don't have much of a life, and are generally bred by unscrupulous people.

Why does it matter to you if MN approves of your dog, though?

leighdinglady · 16/08/2018 21:09

I don't think it's the breed, it's whether you got your dog from a 'gasp'^^ breeder. God forbid you would actually have researched the breed you want and found a puppy. The only acceptable dogs are rescue.

Oysterbabe · 16/08/2018 21:09

I do feel irrationally irritated by two random breeds mashed together and called something stupid.

sexnotgender · 16/08/2018 21:09

My longed lazy hound is lovely though bluebug45.

sexnotgender · 16/08/2018 21:10
  • long legged

"You can’t beat a whippet"

Nope. They'll outrun you every time, even at four months old. although you'd hardly think it to look at them here

geekone · 16/08/2018 21:14

My dog is of course perfect but all Giant Schnauzers are Grin.

According to mumsnet al breeders are evil no one should have a puppy but I don’t care I love mine

I agree.

NinetySixer · 16/08/2018 21:15

I have always found that the specific dog threads are very balanced and full of good advice.

I think things can seem negative as the questions are never ‘AIBU to get a husky x GS - I work from home, the kids are teenagers, we are experienced dog owners who lead a very active life’ Instead, they tend to be ‘AIBU to get a husky x GS - we are novice dog owners who live in a 3 bed flat with 2 under 5s and another on the way, DP works all the hours god sends and I hate walking’.

The former would garner a positive response whilst the second would be full of posters offer more suitable breeds to the OPS circumstances and urging them to consider whether it is the right time for a dog at all.

There are always poster who will spout the all staffys, GS, Rotties, Dobermans and child eating monsters but I would say it’s proportionally reflective of society as a whole.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 16/08/2018 21:15

You'll find mumsnet doesn't like dogs in general. They're all horrible smelly, beasts who can't be trusted, must never be allowed off the lead in public and if left alone with a child for even a second, is liable to eat them.

Mine of course are perfect. Grin

NinetySixer · 16/08/2018 21:16

Excuse the typos

dogzdogz · 16/08/2018 21:16

Nah it just annoys me. You try to get advice on getting a dog and the only advice is to go to a rescue and adopt a greyhound. Nothing wrong with them but they aren’t suitable for everyone.

I don’t have a dog (yet!) but I don’t have real dislikes of any particular breeds. All the Staffies I’ve met have been friendly and soft. I do always feel a bit sick looking at whippets and greyhounds though - it seems you can see it’s arse from every angle.
