Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

We have a Beagle and he's amazing. Tons of work and absolutely no recall but he's amazing with children, has a fantastic temperament and can easily be trained with smelly treats.

Loads of people hear "Beagle" and think stubborn, strong-willed and untrainable. The first two are true but mine is ridiculously easy to train. The other night I trained him to high-five and it took all of thirty seconds with a couple of smelly treats in my hand. He's extremely intelligent and loves to learn.

And he's adorable and has the most velvety ears ever! And yes, we got him from a breeder but he is the picture of health and everywhere we go he gets compliments on his build, legs/hips, coat quality and weight.

As if they are making a new breed. Eg Cavachon
How do you think new breeds were made?

“How do these judgemental folk think most of the pure breeds originated in the first place?“

Often see this argument, but it is so flawed.

Most breeds originated with a purpose in mind, and were developed by stockmen with a very unsentimental mindset. Anything that did not work for type, health or temperament for the job in hand was removed from breeding programmes, by fair means or foul.

Anyone who thinks that the vast majority of current breeders of 'designer breeds' are trying to create new breeds is a bit naive, I'm afraid - not least because the original crosses or as near to them as possible seem to sell better.

abbsisspartacus · 17/08/2018 23:19

I have cats but my friend has just bought a jack Russell crossed with a pug I disapprove because it's a mongrel she has paid £350 for but she is surprisingly cute and not wheezy because her face is pointed not squashed I think pugs etc have been too inbred and there problems as a breed are worsening but backyard breeders are never the answer

Celestia26 · 17/08/2018 23:27

It's the pugs that get me. Bloody pugs. They're one of the breeds no one should have. Huge long laundry list of painful and debilitating conditions.

Before anyone moans about the Pug comment, I'm a Vet and have seen dozens of Pugs die due to malformed airways including a 4 month old.

Also, Sharpeis. Their skin and deformed eyelids mean they are constantly in pain and usually aggressive because of it.

Staffies are great, the badly behaved ones are because of the owners.

My opinion is that (behaviour wise) generally there are no bad breeds just bad owners.

CaledonianSleeper · 17/08/2018 23:29

Here’s our little abomination (cross-breed). Just as well he’s got such a lovely personality, because he’s not much to look at.

SimplyTwinky I'm pleased your Pug is healthy. Exception rather than the rule unfortunately.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 17/08/2018 23:54

People, if they're decent, don't approve of stupidly named crossbreeds that are bred to make money. No reputable breeder churns out poo crosses. It isn't about how cute YOUR individual dog is. It's about the mum. The one that lives in a shed in the dark with matted fur and churning out cute poo crosses for people to buy off Facebook or gumtree or pets 4 homes.

Celestia26 · 17/08/2018 23:56

OP I think the rescue dog suggestion comes up a lot due to the unbelievable number of unwanted dogs having to be euthanased.

It's very sad to speak to clients who want advice on a puppy they're about to take home from a breeder when you have a kennel room filled with dogs who are about to be euthanased due to no one wanting to rehome them. Heartbreaking.

lennyisnuts · 17/08/2018 23:57

I too am guilty of at least two dog related MN sins!

  1. My Lenny is a Cockapoo (the most terrible thing to have ever happened to cocker spaniels and poodles and surely the biggest breeding error to have ever occurred according to some on MN)
  2. I purchased him from a hobby breeder (a very lovely lady who I vetted vigorously)

There's no such thing as the perfect dog but there is the perfect dog for you! Lenny is my dream dog and I feel very blessed to have him. I just ignore the negativity.

It’s just all the fucking judginess that’s so exhausting. Some reputable breeders do breed poo crosses - and we’re not all fucking stupid and we did do our homework and research. You don’t have the monopoly on “decency” Lagertha.
You adopted your dog, I bought mine. So you’re obviously just a better person than me. There - feel better now...?

SleightOfMind · 18/08/2018 00:39

I agree with what Lagertha says but would probably say it less contentiously.

I love all dogs and would never judge an owner by their breed. (Especially as lots of designer pups are landing in rescues now)

I do wish lots of the people I know with trendy puppies at least looked at some of the rescues first. Sad

Their dog might be fine but what about it’s mother and litter mates? I don’t think people understand what misery they’re funding when they choose to buy a puppy that way.

RitaMills · 18/08/2018 00:49

Oh don’t be so fucking stupid LagerthaTheShieldMaiden. I saw my ‘ridiculously named’ Cavapoo with mum several times and was FaceTimed updates regularly and I saw Dad once as well. Both mum and dad had been health checked and were KC registered. I have absolutely no doubt they were not puppy farmed.

Puppy farms do exist but not all crosses are farmed. All dogs are different and each family makes decisions on what dog will suit their lifestyle.

Not everyone wants or is eligible for a rescue dog, it’s not all about how ‘cute’ the dog is ( in my case it is just an added bonus).

Junkmail · 18/08/2018 01:07

I have two “flat faced things” lol 😂 They have a great life—hiking, exploring, eating/rolling in dead things.

I take them for full day hikes, sometimes 5+ hours of walking, a lot of that uphill. They’re both lean and muscled. Some of the issue with these dogs is people let them get overweight and unfit which hampers the breathing. I assume because they’re afraid to overtax them. But start as you mean to go on without overfeeding and under excercising and it’s perfectly possible to have a healthy flat face.

Of course some as doomed to failure because they’re over exaggerated. Mine are somewhat less extreme examples. They’re great little dogs. My eldest—at seven—has never had a moment of trouble with her breathing. I’m slightly more cautious in hot weather but that should go for all dogs really.

I hate to see them demonised because they really are fantastic. Full of life. My brother says that they’re too energetic for him and he doesn’t know how I live with them lol 😂 As with every dog they’re all individuals.

TattyTshirt · 18/08/2018 01:50

What RitaMills said.

I visited my cross breed 5 times between 4 and 9 weeks old. I saw where the pups were born and raised. Met both parents every time we visited and seen how they interacted with the litter. Absolutely nothing to be worried about.

I also got Health tested papers, parents KC papers, vets card containing vaccs and wormer/flea treatments. Plus 4 weeks free insurance with petplan. Also a signed document giving us a month to take pup to vet and if any problems found to return pup to breeder for full refund.

Not all cross breeds come from puppy farms. Exactly the same as pedigree puppies - Some do. Some don't.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 18/08/2018 05:53

Not everyone can adopt a dog.... I keep repeating myself here. The Dogs Trust turned us down because they thought we weren’t suitable for a number of reasons, including maybe starting a family.

So we got our first puppy - now ten and a poodle cross. Fantastic dog

I still have very young children in the house and am nervous about older dogs so have another labradoodle now too. I need to know my dog’s background around v young children

I bet my breeders and go for smaller, hobby breeders who have their dogs at home. Poodle crosses are amazing dogs.

When I am older I hope to adopt but for now, it’s poodle
crosses and they are wonderful

fieryginger · 18/08/2018 06:10

Honestly, I don't trust dogs around kids, I think they all have the potential to snap.

Santaclarita · 18/08/2018 06:22

My only issue with dogs tends to be with the owners. Don't let your dog off a leash if you can't control it off a leash. It shouldn't go running up to other animals and annoy them. Believe me if it does that to my horse he will attack it, and I doubt the outcome will be good for the dog if I can't stop him. Other dogs may attack it too, and it isn't the other dogs fault if it bites yours. It's your fault for allowing it to happen.

There's been people before who have walked their dogs in my horses field, without checking if it's safe. They don't do it again after my horse chases the dogs out.
