Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

I think it’s the mixed breed with stupid names that annoy people. They are, in effect, mongrel dogs and do not have a kennel club breed status. Years ago, people would sell them for £50, now they sell for hundreds of pounds, about the same as a full breed dog.

liz70 · 16/08/2018 22:08

Looks very like a JRT from here, MrsST!

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 22:09

@sexnotgender I'm slowly working on my OH.

ALemonyPea · 16/08/2018 22:09

And Jack Russell terriers are the best dogs.

@sonjadog he is gorgeous, exactly my ideal when I think of 'dog', iyswim Grin

I'm really torn as we are thinking of getting a dog and like the idea of various breeds/cross breeds, but are total newbies and feel more confident going to a rescue centre and being matched with a dog by someone who knows the dog's temperament and needs. Also no idea how we would go about finding a good breeder. I was talking to someone who loves her new cockerpoo, but I asked where she got it and she said the breeder she bought it from has disappeared, and she doesn't have any contact details for them!

CanIBuffalo · 16/08/2018 22:10

Here's my disgusting crossbred freak of nature. Utterly vile isn't she.Grin

Mrsramsayscat · 16/08/2018 22:11

Norks

Marmite27 · 16/08/2018 22:11

Tropic your pooch is so like my old dog I welled up!

He’s been gone 8 years now, but I still remember him like a gangly teenager, all legs and ears

Marmite27 · 16/08/2018 22:12

Ursula, my parents last few dogs have been springers and I’m inclined to agree.

Though two entire males in one house? The dogs bollocks indeed Grin

liz70 · 16/08/2018 22:12

"about the same as a full breed dog.

Worse. I've seen malshitpoo pups listed for £1350 each. Shock Our 5 gen pedigree whippet pup was £600. Somebody's having a laugh.

TropicPlunder · 16/08/2018 22:13

Marmite Flowers
The gangly legs/bat ears are my favourite bits. She's totally poised to do something silly in that photo Grin

I had to wrestle with my conscience about buying a puppy.

There are so many dogs that need homes - if I love animals then surely the right thing to do would be to go to the dog's home and adopt a dog

The problem was that I wanted a puppy that I could train with love and would never bite anyone (I still have all the scars from our innumerable family rescues who invariably bit despite being treated with love and courtesy).

My little dog is a dream come true. He's super friendly kind and loyal and NEVER bites. He's a basset fauve de bretagne - a little known breed here in the UK but the most lovely kindly and inquisitive hound.

I'm posting this really to publicise the breed that has no known hereditary conditions and they are super with kids

This is my Doberman x greyhound dog. She looks terrifying but she’s the softest stupidest dog ever.

“You try to get advice on getting a dog and the only advice is to go to a rescue and adopt a greyhound. Nothing wrong with them but they aren’t suitable for everyone.”

What advice you get is going to depend what sort of thread you start...

If you’re a novice dog owner saying you’re not up for a really active breed, then yes, that’s the advice you’ll get - because they are a really good fit for that.

If you started a thread saying, I’ve done agility for 20 years, but always with collies and I’m wondering how an Aussie compares, no-one’s going to suggest a greyhound...

keyboardkate · 16/08/2018 22:17

No worries about dogs.

But I would never have one myself. I think those of you with dogs will disagree with me, but those of us without dogs think is perfect.

Each to their own.

ALemonyPea · 16/08/2018 22:17

What on earth is a malshitpoo?

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 22:18

❤️

Pissedoffdotcom · 16/08/2018 22:19

Buying a puppy doesn't guarantee temperament tho. Even with the best will in the world this does not include buying from some scummy ByB you can buy a pup that has had a brilliant start in life...and still end up with a neurotic/anxious/aggressive etc dog.

Everyone except staffie owners is lying, sorry. You just can't beat a staffy smile

liz70 · 16/08/2018 22:21

"What on earth is a malshitpoo"

A maltese/shitzhu/poodle mix. The "breeder" actually termed them malshipoos; I was just being rude. Grin

Thesearepearls · 16/08/2018 22:26

I think that if you have a dog from a puppy you can guarantee certain things if you raise them kindly and with love

As with children really. I brought up my dog the way that I brought up my children. Plenty of fresh air and exercise, a good diet, stimulation and training them in certain essentials

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 16/08/2018 22:26

There have always been mongrel dogs and cross breeds, I think people get wound up at their ridiculous pricing and naming as “designer dogs”. As if they are making a new breed. Eg Cavachon, nope, it’s a cavalier x bichon, cockapoo, no, it’s a cocker spaniel cross poodle. Pricing them the same as pure breds won’t make them a new breed.

Marigold101 · 16/08/2018 22:26

Did someone mention weinmaraners at the start of this post? Here’s ours she is actually very beautiful! The cap doesn’t do her justice!

“I think that if you have a dog from a puppy you can guarantee certain things if you raise them kindly and with love”

You can’t though, fear aggression is hereditary and pain from medical conditions can cause behavioural issues as well - so there’s two things straight away that are down to breeding.

It’s a combination of nature and nurture and you only have partial control of one of those.

So in many ways an assessed adult rescue dog is more of a guarantee than a puppy from a dodgy breeder.
