To think Mumsnet don’t approve of any dog?

Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

I had my heart set on a Beagle BlueUggs. Until I researched them....is it true they will not recall if they get a scent in the air?

After months of deliberation we settled on a cockerpoo in the end. Well, after viewing various spaniels from obvious puppy farms.

We love him! The Google translation for a cockerpoo is a clown with a big personality. Yep that's him. Our clown! We wouldn't be without him.

True. I have seen many posts about how buyers should get retired dogs or dogs from the pound which I do understand, but people are allowed to buy a new puppy / young dog.

ItsalmostSummer · 17/08/2018 03:04

Oh and I do understand and dislike puppy farms and breeding problems. Breeding should I believe be done by an expert.

SallyVating · 17/08/2018 04:48

I've got a red nosed American pit bull. Banned breed. She's spayed, microchipped, annually licenced and insured. Soppiest, softest most gentle dog ever. Her breed got a bad rep but it's a myth. A few dickhead bad owners mean that her existence and our ownership of her are monitored by the police and defra. She's never bitten anyone or anything but she's not allowed out of the house/garden without a muzzle. It's bollocks

SallyVating · 17/08/2018 04:50

Proper scary dog

Oh I love pit bulls 😍 saw a beautiful one in Florida when I was there but I was too shy to ask the owner if I could say hello

IAmInsignificunt · 17/08/2018 06:33

I approve of all dogs.
Please may I stroke some dogs? Please?

We have a Yorkshire terrier (a 5lb bossy boots) and a Dalmatian currently. I dream of a child free day where I can just lounge around chilling with my dogs.

actualpuffins · 17/08/2018 06:36

As if they are making a new breed. Eg Cavachon

How do you think new breeds were made?

sexnotgender · 17/08/2018 06:48

@bluebug45 they really are lovely.

Lazy and greedy and this one is like my shadow.

I'm on my second Cairn. After my first one died I swore I couldn't go through that again, but years later I was on the internet and a breeder was looking for a home for a puppy born blind in one eye. We had to give undertakings about breeding but I took him, and despite a serious health issue at six months old I've never regretted it once.
He's my best friend in the entire world. My husband knows his place Wink and Wee Stinkie McDog knows his - usually right by me. He's my sounding board and my stitching buddy. We're meeting a friend for lunch today - she's coming not to see me but to see His Nibs. If they'd let him in the pub without me I could probably stay at home.
Terriers are characters, there's no doubt, but I've never regretted having them. Well, except for when he ate two antique beaded footstools. Oh well, easy come easy go, huh?

longwayoff · 17/08/2018 07:01

O purple I'm sorry, I wasn't criticising you personally, lucky dog to have someone so caring. I just loathe the whole breed standard KC rubbish which causes such unhealthy animals across many breeds. Enjoy your pug may you have many years together.

Bananarama12 · 17/08/2018 07:09

Really, the KC is just as bad as everything else. They have made poor flat faced breeds suffer by breeding them to have the flat face!
I don't care if you rescue/buy your dog as long as you look after it forever and love the shit out of it ❤

HannahHut · 17/08/2018 07:16

I feel like there are two veins of thought on Mumsnet with dog breeds:

Crossbreeds: Are given an actual name and sold for as much as a purebred when a few years ago it would be a mutt you couldn't give away.

Purebreeds: Why breed more dogs when there are dogs in rescues (including mutts) that need homes?

In addition when someone asks about a breed with known medical issues they are brought up (flat face pugs or back issues in sausage dogs).

Then there is the debate on where you keep them and for how long you're home. (A flat and working full time Vs WFH in a country manor).

There's always one or all of these things that come up on a "what dog?" thread that cause replies that make people think no dog is suitable, however all of these situations can be managed in some way.

As long as people are sensible, well research and know what they are getting into (and are willing to fork out the money if needed to give the dog the very best life!) Then just go for it. 😊

“There was a thread on here a while ago asking about people's dogs. I love mine, a Chinese Crested Powderpuff called Sophie, see pic”

She could have a few arguments with Chico, of the same breed.

Allthelittleangels I’m so sorry to hear you lost yours, he looks gorgeous in your picture.

liz70 · 17/08/2018 07:30

"liz70 Enjoy the 4 month old stage whilst you can, they soon become older and lazier"

Oh, I know, the paw on head photo above is our old boy Chase, our whippet before our new pup Bracken. Smile

"I don't care if you rescue/buy your dog as long as you look after it forever and love the shit out of it ❤"

Amen to that.

Greyhorses · 17/08/2018 07:49

I have 2 (quite often 3 when I look after my parents) german shepherds plus a toddler.

I am the definition of stupid on mumsnet GrinWink

AEJS · 17/08/2018 07:51

I have one of those terrible designer breeds, a Cockapoo, and shock horror he came to us from the breeder.
He is the love of my life. He is 3 years old now and without him in my life I would be lost. I have many MH issues and he has helped me through them all.
My DC adore him too, a real family member rather than just a dog.

Xenia · 17/08/2018 07:54

I hate all dogs.

Glumglowworm · 17/08/2018 07:58

Plenty on MN do hate all dogs and rather than avoid dog related threads, they enjoy leaping in to make sure we all know they hate dogs.

Plenty of dog lovers do have legitimate concerns about backyard breeders (hint if they’re repeatedly advertising a litter of puppies on fb/gumtree etc then they’re a backyard breeder), about overbreeding causing health issues especially in short faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs, and about cross breeeds being sold with ridiculous made up names for more than a pedigree dog would cost.

tootstastic · 17/08/2018 07:59

Really can't understand all the derision about cross breeds...'annoying, irritating, pretentious'????? Wtf is wrong with the people making these comments?! How do these judgemental folk think most of the pure breeds originated in the first place?

LakieLady · 17/08/2018 08:27

He's a basset fauve de bretagne - a little known breed here in the UK but the most lovely kindly and inquisitive hound.

Lovely dogs! I saw a man with a Fauve puppy in Brighton a year or so ago - he was chuffed beyond belief that I knew what it was, and the puppy was just delightful.

I'm on my 2nd lakeland terrier and will get a 3rd when she goes. They are not for eveyone: they are spitrited, clever and naughty, and need careful handling. I would never recommend the breed to an inexperienced owner and breed club friends agree that they are not a good first dog. You can't train them, you have to outwit them and negotiate with them. As one breeder says "You can't beat a lakeland. Well, you could, but it wouldn't make any difference".

But I love them. They are affectionate, loyal, adaptable, small but with big attitude, no significant health issues, don't shed and if they don't make you laugh at least 10 times a day, I'd query its breeding. I have no qualms about getting a pedigree puppy because they're an endangered breed and I think it's good to encourage ownership of these vulnerable native breeds.

longwayoff · 17/08/2018 08:30

The more cross breeds- mongrels, mutts - the better.
