Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

I’m a dog walker, a fosterer, I work for a charity and I have six of my own. I love all dogs, yes even pure breeds despite living and breathing rescue for the last four years. In a perfect world there would be no backyard breeders, no puppy mills and no dogs in shelters but the world isn’t perfect. I do believe people should be able to adopt if they have children, work, live in a flat etc if it is suitable for the dog they want. I don’t believe anyone should be allowed to breed their dogs without a licence, appropriate and extensive health tests and a whole bunch of other criteria that would weed out the people who breed at home for money. At the end of the day dogs are amazing, I’m incredibly lucky to spend my days with them.

I was going to say yabu, retired greyhounds are ok but see you’ve covered that! Grin

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 16/08/2018 21:19

God forbid you get a cross breed because you find them more interesting and want the best of two breeds

My ten year old doodle is a delight and fingers crossed remains healthy. He gallops past all the KC registered labs limping with their bad hips and arthritis. He has the intelligence of a poodle and the devotion of a lab

But nope, i should have got a pure bred with all its health issues and crazy requirements of the goddam Kennel Club meaning it can’t breathe or walk properly

Tiny dog with a Big attitude.Got from someone who said she wasn't a breeder, her dogs had just had a litter. Not sure how true this was but he was given a loving forever home with me and he's perfect

We got both our whippets (our first old boy died) as puppies, from breeders. Peperone (Ayrshire) and Shynee (Liverpool) respectively, both with 5 generation pedigree. Both gorgeous, healthy, lovely temperaments. I couldn't give a shiny shit if MN disapproves. Nobody with any sense would IRL.

Aaaaah wrong pic!

Sane discourse on anything dog-related is impossible in AIBU. If you want (more) sensible answers post in the Doghouse folder.

Here’s my dog. He’s pedigree AND uncastrated as he is used in breeding. Had several litters. He’s my best friend.

Dogzdogz what about a corgi instead of a greyhound - much less leg!

LyndorCake · 16/08/2018 21:35

I've got bearded collies. I don't care what people say about them, to me they are the perfect family dog

liz70 · 16/08/2018 21:37

Is that a bully, Duchess? I love EBTs!

ToadOfSadness · 16/08/2018 21:38

I like dogs, some types more than others and would be happy to adopt a Staffie if I could have a dog, (have always wanted one but never able to) or whatever dog I got along with at a rescue, especially a mongrel. However I wouldn't go out of my way to get a mongrel that was bred under the guise of being a designer mix, there are enough mongrels already, and I love their uniqueness. I am not a fan of deliberately pretending that a mix of breeds is something special when it is just a pretentious way of breeding mongrels.

Duchessgummybuns · 16/08/2018 21:44

@liz70 He is! A rather old but extremely sweet oafish creature Smile

liz70 · 16/08/2018 21:48

Ah, I just love their cheeky, smiley faces. Smile If I didn't have a whippet I'd seriously consider a bully. But no, whippies it is for us! Smile

I came to this thread KNOWING there would be pooch pix.
I am NOT disappointed . However, the perfect dog is here, now, so you can all stop posting. :)

Ours is big, smelly, attention seeking, permanently bouncy, a thief, noisy and manipulative but...... he’s the perfect dog for us. Usually. Except when he eats my husband’s running socks.

I scooped a mangy, hungry, primitive-type African village dog from our street last year and she's been a delight. The perfect dog for so many reasons: healthy, independent, loving... designed to breathe well, eat anything and withstand hot and cold temperatures. She flew with us to the UK a couple of weeks back at great expense. Now, I'm not saying its the only way to get a dog....But it's worked out great for us Grin.
Puppy farms are horrendous, but I also worry about the health and ethics of a lot of pedigree breeds in general

I have two beagles and love them dearly! Not a perfect breed, infact totally troublesome but they’re perfect for me 😂

MrsST · 16/08/2018 22:04

@monstera same here! Love my beautiful GR boy.

auditqueen · 16/08/2018 22:08

Another vote for a golden retriever as the most perfect dog ever, apart from maybe a retriever or lab x collie mix.

Threads about dogs on MN never end well.
