Every time someone asks about a breed, people criticise it. Apart from retired greyhounds.

AIBU to wonder if the perfect breed does actually exist?

“How do these judgemental folk think most of the pure breeds originated in the first place?“

With some very cruel practices, which is why people don’t do it anymore.

I got a puppy when I went on maternity leave with my first baby, (12 weeks before she was born) so the very definition of stupid on MN plus she was a border collie. In my defence I was an experienced dog owner and everything was fine but then it was 20 odd years ago and I didn't have the internet to suggest I was doing everything wrong. I'd always had puppies growing up so it was normal, my sister did exactly the same thing and didn't have any problems either.
I've had 4 puppies since then and haven't found any of them to be really hard work which is very unusual according to MN.

As well as bullies, I get occasional Manchester Terrier envy. Absolutely beautiful dogs.

Fantastic dogs, and also on the Register of Vulnerable Breeds.

At Crufts, they do a display of vulnerable breeds every day. The breeds walk round the ring in alphabetical order, so the lakelands were always in between the Kerry Blues and the Manchesters.

On more than one occasion, the KBs started a ruck. My lakies always got out of the way, but the Mancs would really stand up to them, despite being half their size.

Here's my Tibetan Terrier. He's gorgeous but bloody hard work. If I had my time again, I may well have gone for something different but he is lots of fun.

@tabulahrasa 'With some very cruel practices, which is why people don’t do it anymore'

Yet that does not seem to be the reason that is spouted....most criticism seems to be for petty censorious reasons like the price being more than purebreeds or that they're 'pretentious'.

MasonJar · 17/08/2018 08:51

This is my perfect dog.
Would love another just like him but impossible because according to doggie DNA test he's a mix of around 20 breeds + various unidentifiable mongrel combinations.
Boxer and GSD predominate and he looks like a mix of both.

The absolute best dog ever is an Airedale Terrier - we are in our 2nd and are planning a third when our old lab has passed on.
Definately not a breed for the faint hearted but we love them!

Love all the doggie pics.

Ours is a little Yorkie. She’s little but she’s plucky and utterly adorable.

I’ve never seen a thread where someone is looking to buy a crossbreed and those are the reasons against one tbh.

Breeding practices are what most replies are about. Which I suppose price does come into, but more to do with that fact that most crosses are more expensive than either breed involved would be and the sort of breeder that attracts.

Cath2907 · 17/08/2018 09:11

You are all wrong - a Bichon Frise is the way to go! Here is my lovely boyo as a pup! He is bigger now but he is still gorgeous. No silly haircuts here just lots of mud, wading in rivers and rolling in fox poop!

Jack Russells are my favourite. Very different to greyhounds but you can always find them in rescues. A big dog in a small body!

lucydogz · 17/08/2018 09:29

our beloved dog was (we think) a staffie crossed with a Jack Russell. We got her from a rescue and she was the most perfect dog.
Now and again there are threads on MN where the poster wants a dog and their partner doesn't. An astonishing number of dog lovers load on to say that the partner is basically denying her her human rights, and that she should go ahead and get the dog. And the partner will get used to it. I think one of the ended with the OP getting the dog, and the dog biting her. Karma.

Pissedoffdotcom · 17/08/2018 09:29

People get arsey over buying puppies because a lot of the time the posts asking about x type of dog show lack of research. If you haven't done your research about a particular dog beforehand, you can't expect much. And then you get people who can't or won't wait for a decent breeder to have a litter, so play right into the hands of scummy ByB who treat their dogs like cash cows.

I would much prefer everyone rescued. But i understand some of the reasons people don't. As long as they use DECENT breeders who do things right, fine.

The fancy cross breeds get my goat. Again usually because some moron has decided Delilah is a wonderful family pet so her pups will be too, let's mate her with Bruno over the road & sell the pups for £££s with ridiculous names. No guarantees on health or temperament because you can still get landed with the worst genetic traits of each breed rather than the best!

Mongrel 2 is a rescue who we got as a puppy. No idea on her parents as she was found in a bag on the road with her siblings. Dog version of one of my daughters. She hasn't eaten any of them yet....

a big dog in a small body

Awwww love that. That’s my Yorkie

apriljune12 · 17/08/2018 09:49

Fox

I think I could actually gladly shoot the person who abandoned them in s road.

How can anyone do that to an animal Angry

FoxTeaParty · 17/08/2018 10:28

@apriljune12 me too. People are vile. She is from Crete, the rescue shelter was fit to bursting point so she was skin and bone when she arrived with us. I just don't understand what makes someone think putting 5 puppies in a bag under a car is ever an ok thing to do.

Sallystyle · 17/08/2018 10:34

I might have a Bulldog but I did rescue this beautiful boy.

Golden retrievers are clearly the best dog, so long as you like your dogs stupid and your house a fluff factory.

I don't object to any dog in itself. Wouldn't have a Staffy if it was the last breed on earth myself, but that's the whole point of all the different breeds. I also would be very unlikely to rescue, I like my dogs a bit more predictable in health, temperament, size, coat care etc.

I would strongly recommend that anyone who wants to buy either a pedigree or cross-breed dog from a breeder ensures that they are getting a pup from health tested (not 'vet checked') parents, and buying from a knowledgeable breeder who has all generations around the place to see temperaments and longevity. That is only good sense for the buyer.

I do, however, have no time at all for those who don't make every effort to avoid commercial breeders and puppy farms. The industry is evil, and there is so much information available out there. I do appreciate that it can be difficult, but there is no excuse whatever not to try very hard. Just wanting a cute puppy, and wanting it on your own timescales does not negate that.

IceCreamFace · 17/08/2018 10:55

I definitely prefer rescues/mongrels. I wouldn't judge anyone who got a breed from a reputable breeder as long as it wasn't a designer dog which was likely to suffer and have significant health problems. Anyone who gets the latter or buys from a puppy farm is an irresponsible dick as far as I'm concerned. The same goes for idiots who buy a dog they're completely incapable of looking after properly (e.g. someone I used to work with who bought a working farm dog to live in her 2 bed flat just before she got pregnant and lost interest in the dog entirely).

Anon90 · 17/08/2018 10:58

My perfect breed is the alaskan husky. Mine stayed with my ex and the dog is my best friend. I miss him every day but im not in a position to look after him right now.

Amazing dogs and ive never known a breed like it.
