To think that men that wear panama hats are twats?

Disclaimer. 70+ are acceptable as it’s much more their era.

Otherwise, every man that I’ve met that’s been say 30-40 who wore one, has been a twat. Usually arrogant, think they’re a bit posh, above everyone else. It’s such a look at me piece. Often they’re worn by people who are odd too, thinking they’re “classy”.

AIBU to loathe these things. I see them and cringe.

rather practical in this weather, I'd have thought. DH wears a hat sometimes when it is really sunny, same shape but made of straw. Jolly fetching Grin

legolammb · 26/07/2018 22:25

Bit of a generalisation - and they're a fairly generic style surely? It seems the default hat choices for men are baseball caps (sometimes too casual and don't cover ears so not that practical if you're pasty like my DP) or panama style - there doesn't seem to be much other socially acceptable choice.

hornbeam · 26/07/2018 22:26

When I say the same shape but made of straw, I mean the hat, not DH Grin

keyboardkate · 26/07/2018 22:27

The heat must be getting to OP.

Hats are important. I like the straw ones that look ridiculous on the rack in the shop but do the job.

What is the point of this thread please.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 26/07/2018 22:27

What about bringing back flat caps?

JacquesHammer · 26/07/2018 22:28

When I say the same shape but made of straw, I mean the hat, not DH

A literal straw man Grin

KittyHawke80 · 26/07/2018 22:29

Yes, you are. My dear old dad looked wonderful in his. That said, we used to play tennis with a bloke who wore a pith helmet made out of bsnana/plantain leaves, or something, and he ought really to have been shot, probably.

KittyHawke80 · 26/07/2018 22:31

Men over about forty-five shouldn’t wear baseball caps. Unless they are, like, Tom Watson.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 26/07/2018 22:32

What if they are playing baseball?

EnglishRose13 · 26/07/2018 22:32

My husband wears one. He looks like a twat but he's not a twat.

HTH.

Processedpea · 26/07/2018 22:33

I like a Panama esp with linen suit where do you live up? Round here men just wear three length shorts and nothing else to show off their tatts

CasperGutman · 26/07/2018 22:33

What about bringing back flat caps?

What do you mean, bringing them back? They never went away. I love a good tweed flat cap. They're hardly the right thing for a heat wave though, are they?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/07/2018 22:34

I love a flat cap but not very practical in hot weather

KittyHawke80 · 26/07/2018 22:35

Professionally? Possibly, then.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/07/2018 22:35

Mind you, I reckon OP would think a bloke in a flat cap was a twat trying to be posh

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 26/07/2018 22:36

Accumulating the data in this thread very scientifically with science we can concluded that there is a gap between the age of 45ish and 70 where we haven't decided on an acceptable hat.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 26/07/2018 22:37

I had no idea they were still a thing, I haven't seen one since my great grandad passed.

Bellaboo9 · 26/07/2018 22:37

My husband who is 41 has been bald since he was 22 due to health issues, he wears one to stop his head getting burnt and to keep the sun off his head all day. What the alternative? A cap? Fisherman's hat? Would he look like a twat in a cap at his age? An oasis wannabe in a fisherman's hat?

FlyingMonkeys · 26/07/2018 22:39

Flat caps are hugely in favour with the 'hipsters' (I'm obviously showing my age with 'hipster', my gran would say 'trendy'...). Maybe OP would feel sombrero's are less twattish?

KellyanneConway · 26/07/2018 22:40

YANBU, I think you must have met my ex when he was wearing his, he meets your description. It always used to come out in hot weather so it makes sense.

Oldsu · 26/07/2018 22:41

My DH is 69 so is he a twat?????? guess what today he wore his with a hawaiian shirt so is he a double twat?????

I thought he looked wonderful and colourful but then I do love him dearly

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/07/2018 22:42

There’s nothing wrong with a Panama! There’s also nothing wrong with a cap, bowler, flat cap etc it’s all about place and time.
Hats are cool and practical.
OP just has an unreasonable dislike of blokes in a stylish hat for some reason, ie, bloke on holiday in Panama = wanna be posh twat.
Maybe he IS a posh twat

mumsastudent · 26/07/2018 22:46

the beauty of these hats is they also protect ears as well as the top of head what you might not know (serious bit!) is that men are particularly prone to skin cancer on top of head and tops of ears a panama hat protects both - and they can be folded & they don't look like Trump!

EnormousDormouse · 26/07/2018 22:47

DP (48) favours a fine-weave straw/paper trilby.
Could this be the acceptable hat choice for the under 70s?

steppemum · 26/07/2018 22:48

so, if you have no hair, and burn very easily and need a hat that shades your neck as well as your face, what hat would you suggest a man wears?
