To think that men that wear panama hats are twats?

Disclaimer. 70+ are acceptable as it’s much more their era.

Otherwise, every man that I’ve met that’s been say 30-40 who wore one, has been a twat. Usually arrogant, think they’re a bit posh, above everyone else. It’s such a look at me piece. Often they’re worn by people who are odd too, thinking they’re “classy”.

AIBU to loathe these things. I see them and cringe.

I was about to go on a massive 6 page rant about how Jon Hammond wares one and he's built a dinosaur park...

But you said 70+ is fine so I won't

NiceViper · 26/07/2018 21:23

So what hats shouid they be wearing? That offer a proper brim (for 360 protection to face and neck) and which can be rolled up when you need to jam it into luggage.

And as a female wearer of a panama sometimes, am I a twat too?

pinkcarpet · 26/07/2018 21:23

My DH wears one. He is pretty much bald and it’s either a panama or a sweaty baseball cap which he finds far too hot in this weather.

I’d consider him more of a twat for getting sunburn than wearing a hat

HostaToFortune · 26/07/2018 21:24

I wear a Panama hat and I’ve been reliably informed that a) I look great in it thank you Dad and b) I’m not a twat.

YABU.

Good one.

YANBU.
Every summer I urge DH to desist because he looks like a twat in a hat. Makes me cringe.

user1471453601 · 26/07/2018 21:25

Oddly enough, I've done extensive research on Just this subject. Of the two people I know who wear this type of hat, one is a grade A twat, the other is a nice person. So my conclusion is, don't judge a person by the type of headwear they choose

MissusGeneHunt · 26/07/2018 21:25

@RobinEggs.... Brilliant!

@oilis... What about the 41-69 bracket? Are they verging on twattery? I'll give you a brief answer, DP (not so fucking D tonight) wears one. He's a right nobbish twat tonight.

beavertown · 26/07/2018 21:25

I don't think that the word “classy” would be in the vocabulary of anyone who wears a genuine panama hat.

They are infinitely superior to a revolting baseball cap, no-one over 16 can ever be taken seriously off the sports field wearing a baseball cap.

delphguelph · 26/07/2018 21:28

DH has just bought a Noël Gallagher type monstrosity. Like it's 1993.

A Panama would be preferable.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 26/07/2018 21:28

My DH has worn a Panama since he was 20. I've worn one for years. They're both quite battered and 'worn-in' but there is literally nothing better on a hot sunny day.

What a silly thread!

primulaprimulina · 26/07/2018 21:28

You judge a person by the clothes they wear???? How very shallow.

delphguelph · 26/07/2018 21:29

The man from Del Monte thinks you are very unreasonable

^

Vairy funny stuff

LARLARLAND · 26/07/2018 21:31

You need to move up North. Nobody here wears Panama hats.

flatwhiteplease · 26/07/2018 21:31

But what is a stylish hat for blokes? Baseball caps look a bit silly on anyone over 25 imo.

OhTheRoses · 26/07/2018 21:31

Good responses. Grin

PortiaCastis · 26/07/2018 21:32

Getting your head sunburnt or suffering sunstroke because you don't wear a hat is being a twat!

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/07/2018 21:32

One of the fisherman type hats delphguelph?

If he doesn't have giant eyebrows tell him he's doing it wrong.

TalbotAMan · 26/07/2018 21:32

Always fancied one but never actually bought one (DW thinks like you). Wonder what that makes me?

TalbotAMan · 26/07/2018 21:34

Mind you, I am nearer 70 than 30 Sad

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 26/07/2018 21:34

YABVVU. And weirdly judgey. (although I do feel a bit the same about Drizabone outerwear in the UK but I know it's just me)

ClashCityRocker · 26/07/2018 21:35

My dad wears one coz he had skin cancer on his bald patch and is very nervy about going out in the sun without a hat.

There isn't a great deal of fashionable head choices for men in their fifties in the hot sun. He likes it, it keeps him safe.

TBf I'd rather have me dad here with me than him feeling shamed about wearing a hat.
