To think that men that wear panama hats are twats?

Disclaimer. 70+ are acceptable as it’s much more their era.

Otherwise, every man that I’ve met that’s been say 30-40 who wore one, has been a twat. Usually arrogant, think they’re a bit posh, above everyone else. It’s such a look at me piece. Often they’re worn by people who are odd too, thinking they’re “classy”.

AIBU to loathe these things. I see them and cringe.

OP - you have your answer. Grin

ImAIdoot · 27/07/2018 07:54

The only reliable indicator me I’ve found of identifying twats are personalised number plates and pinkie rings. I used to include red trousers on my list but I know at least 2 men tha wear red trousers that aren’t twats. Deck shoes are fairly reliable. I’ve not assessed Panama hats yet but I will from now on.

Yeah I would reserve judgment on that, the red trouser rule can be a slow burner but does tend to turn out right in the end. It's just not as in your face as tracksuit bottoms tucked into socks or red/orange trainers.

Most hats emit at least a faint twat signal I think. The most confusing one is old man style cloth caps on young men, because much of the time they suggest "contact norad we have moved to twatcon 1" but sometimes people who are fine wear them.

ginandbearit · 27/07/2018 07:55

Actually the only true and incontrovertible sign of male twattery is a bow tie worn at any time other than black tie events

PlatypusPie · 27/07/2018 08:05

Lightweight, brim gives shade - mostly look rather dashing, though much better when not shiny new. Much better than baseball caps in most non sporting occasions,.

What crashubg inverted snob you are, OP.

PlatypusPie · 27/07/2018 08:05

Crashing

Kokeshi123 · 27/07/2018 08:07

Panama hats are great.

Way better than b*seball caps (ugh....)

ImAIdoot · 27/07/2018 08:08

Such an overt display of twats status that I think it might even be adopted on purpose by men who aren't interesting enough to even be fullt developed twats, to give the impression of having more to them. Which of course in turn makes them twats, so mission accomplished I suppose.

StripySocksAndDocs · 27/07/2018 08:10

But what about (no thread is complete without whataboutory) the nice man down my road? He tucks his red trousers into his socks (with deck shoes), has a pinky ring and wears a Panama hat with his bow tie as he drives his personalised reg audi. What about his feelings, the nice man. Hmm?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/07/2018 08:16

I am bald, I have a beard, I'm in my mid 50s. I wear a Panama hat in my leisure time when it's too hot/bright. I would not however wear one on my commute to work (central London).
Don't think I'm a twat but would guess that is up to others to judge Grin.

LakieLady · 27/07/2018 08:23

DP agrees with you, OP, which is a bloody shame because he looks fucking great in a Panama. He's bald, too, so really ought to wear a hat. He tans easily, we're just back from a week in Cornwall and the top of his head is the colour of a conker. It looks weird and I think he should cover it up.

Red trousers are a different matter. They are so beloved by twats that there is a whole site devoted to pics of twats in red trousers. It's called "Look at my fucking red trousers" if anyone fancies a laugh.

As long as the Panama isn't worn with one or more other indicators of twattishness (eg red trousers, deck shoes, stripey blazer, neckerchief, pinkie ring, Jesus sandals), I think it's fine.

Notso · 27/07/2018 08:31

The man from Del Monte thinks you are very unreasonable

Brilliant! Grin

Not sure I've seen any Panama hat wearing men here, we're in more of a bucket hat and shirt off but artfully hanging out the back of your trackies kind of town.

Undercoverbanana · 27/07/2018 08:39

My Dad is 77 and wears one. He is inclined towards twattishness in a harmless way.

Whistling, however .... TWAT. Sure sign.

Oh look at me. I have nothing to say or anything to add to anyone’s life but I’m so important that my tuneless drivel must interfere with your day.

Timeandtune · 27/07/2018 08:48

My DH is 62 and I have finally persuaded him to wear a Panama. He is retired now and spends a lot of time in the garden.
He had a couple of dizzy turns which were caused by too much sun and the hat has definitely helped.
He is very self conscious about his bald patch and hasn't worn his hat in public yet possibly for fear of being judged a "twat' by people like the OP.

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/07/2018 08:51

Jeez so much fuss over a hat...

Can't we all just get along?

scaryteacher · 27/07/2018 08:54

Dh has a Tilly hat, as do I, as the brim is wide, so protects the neck; and he has bucket hats which are essential for his hobby (not fishing). He wears deck shoes, but he does sail, and I prefer him to wear deck shoes (no socks) in summer when he lives in shorts at home, as opposed to any sort of sandal.

It's hitting the mid 30s here in Belgium, so his bucket hat was employed yesterday whilst he mowed the lawn.

WilburIsSomePig · 27/07/2018 08:57

Bloody hell. It's a hat love, I really wouldn't give it so much thought.

MissBartlettsconscience · 27/07/2018 08:59

My little brother wears a Panama hat even though he's only 30. However he is also totally bald, very fair skinned and was given the hat as a leaving present from the hospital in Ecuador where he volunteered as an A&e doctor for two years before coming back to the UK to be an A&E registrar.

I think he's tried hard to not be a twat.

actualpuffins · 27/07/2018 09:00

YABVU. I really like them. I wish it was the fashion again for everyone to wear hats, people look so smart in old photos.

rslsys · 27/07/2018 09:14

Tilley hat is the only way to go!
Lightweight, wicks up moisture, chin strings for windy days, eyelets to give a cooling breeze to the top of the bonce, a lifetime guarantee and, most importantly, a hidden pocket to keep beer money in!

HemlockStarglimmer · 27/07/2018 09:24

My 46 year old husband loves hats and had many of them. He started losing his hair in his twenties and hats are often essential to comfort.
OP would consider him the biggest twat of all in his Panama or deer stalker.
When we can afford it I’m hoping he (actually both of us) will get a bowler hat.
I love my Tilly hat for the above mentioned reasons.

RadishesAndLentils · 27/07/2018 10:38

I love hats. More people should wear hats more often.

I work in the city. It'd be great if city workers started wearing bowler hats again.

Maybe I should. But I'd need to be wearing a suit. Right now I'm wearing a flowery skirt and t-shirt due to the heat. A bowler hat might look silly.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 27/07/2018 11:03

My field research concludes that men with giant ridiculous sized beards are far more twattish than any hat wearers.

This this this!

GahWhatever · 27/07/2018 11:12

Hmm. I'm not sure that the Panama denotes twattishness.
One twat, 2 hats, you decide.

To think that men that wear panama hats are twats?

Ethylred · 27/07/2018 11:18

Trying to understand the "posh" bit here.
Is it wrong to be posh? Or is it wrong not to be posh?
Give us a clue love, I've got my Tesco run to do.
Or is it Waitrose?

LakieLady · 27/07/2018 11:20

Dh has a Tilly hat, as do I

Tilley hats are fab. I might ask for one for my birthday next month, which will guarantee we won't get another heatwave for 10 years.

I almost persuaded DP to get a Tilley hat. He was highly amused by the story about the the bloke whose Tilley got eaten by an elephant, retrieved it from the elephant poo a day or two later, put it through the washing machine and found it was as good as new.
