To Not Want England To Win The World Cup.

I am not English I am Welsh and rarely support English teams, but I have got caught up in the excitement of the teams achievements and until yesterday thought it would be fabulous if they did actually win the World Cup.

Then I saw the damage caused across the country but so called fans so called celebrating the quarter final win and thought God forbid they win what the hell will happen across country when the yobs celebrate that!

I also think that 'young lady' photographed jumping on an ambulance along with her companions and the ones photographed on bus shelters should be named shamed and charged with criminal damage and the same goes for anyone else who does not know how to celebrated in decent law abiding way.

This is a very disappointing reaction to what should be a happy and proud celebration

Think the weather & working pub shifts during matches might be getting to me, but the OTT English patriotism has seemed a little pathetic at times. Sure be happy and celebrate, that's great and lovely to see (honestly), but exaggerating what the World Cup actually means for the country makes me a bit Hmm
The country is divided as fuck and winning a football tournament isn't going to mend anything, seems more like a distraction or temporary bridge. It brings people together for a few days, or as long as they're in it, not permanently. It doesn't end the utter contempt felt by many in the UK for benefits claimants or bring Leavers and Remainers any closer together once they're out of the pub or any other of our myriad social issues. So obviously nice to see people happy but no point in pretending Britain has this glorious, inclusive, intact national spirit outside sports. It's there but fragmented and contained within our diverse little social enclaves and doesn't mix or lose its various class characters to translate to everyday life under non-festive or non-emergency conditions.
Happy to be proved wrong though of course.

(Nice bit of sexism there though with the 'young lady' bit OP)

Ta Japanese.

I worry that England winning will encourage the insular Brexit feeling that I don’t recognise as British.

As has been illustrated by several threads on here and by our media: England=Britain to many people.

I’m genuinely concerned that an England win will fuel the rhetoric and strength of feeling behind a hard Brexit.

My husband is half English and we are supporting England despite being evil Scottish people but my fears over Brexit (which Scotland didn’t bloody vote for) remain (if you’ll pardon the pun).

Anyway, lovely wee team. Good luck England and please don’t let the bad people use it as an excuse to further isolate our little island 👍.

ilovesooty · 08/07/2018 18:08

They can only do their best with the matches they're scheduled to play. They can't be expected to heal social division as well

dementedma · 08/07/2018 18:09

we are currently on holiday in Poland. DH and DS are huge England Footy fans and we have watched a couple of games here surrounded by fans from all nationalities, all cheering on their own, or someone else's team. there hasn't been the slightest hint of trouble anywhere. Everyone is behaving impeccably and enjoying the moment. Most fans know how to behave. As always its a handful of dickheads who spoil it for all

SoddingUnicorns · 08/07/2018 18:10

This pisses me right off.

Having said that, we’re on holiday in England just now (we’re Scottish) and actually where we are the atmosphere is quite nice. People seem genuinely excited that England have progressed further than they have in a generation (24 years I believe?) and the vibe seems to be quite positive. The flags everywhere don’t seem
intimidating, more excited and happy.

I’m a neutral watching the World Cup, and it’s been a bloody good tournament to watch!

Happypuppy · 08/07/2018 18:11

@seasawride -how fabulous! 😍😍😍 hope it works out for them!

velourvoyageur · 08/07/2018 18:11

Totally ilove but wasn't asking them to do that, just suggesting it's not the case that English people treat each other the same way in everyday life as they are doing now when they have a common goal, are happy etc.

ProudAunty2nine · 08/07/2018 18:12

Comprehension is a big problem on Mumsnet you see it all the time, so let me make it simple
I am not racist
I do not condone racism or insult of ANY national flag
I do not blame the English football team for the idiots it picks up on its way to success
I think GS and team have done a fab job
I have enjoyed all the England games up until now
I am Welsh and proud of it and assume every decent person is proud of their country of origin and accepts and celebrates all other countries and their beliefs and ways of life (better be expressly precise here to save anymore jumping up and down and say except the ones with bad human rights records and who are antifeminist)
I do not care whether it was man or woman jumping on ambulances bus shelters etc they should be named shamed and charged
I am offended at being called racist anti feminist by people who don't know me

Hope that is cleared up now
Ill be waiting to respond to more insults

Firstly, i want England to WIN ! it ll be amazing for the country.

However, you cannot deny the reality! since the 70s. football has become a thugs game, for the poorly educated and those with violent tendencies.
Gareth Southgate is apparently very unusual because he has 8 O-levels!!!

You only have to look at how much is spent in Policing costs week in, week out, the behavior of the fans, the players toward the referees, Managers getting touch line bans (Google Neil Warnock and how he behaves) or parents at the local school league.

nancy75 · 08/07/2018 18:13

It’s obvious that a lot of these comments come from people that know nothing about football. English fans are not seen as the worst in the world, never heard of the Russian ultras? Seen the blatant & open racism at many E European football stadiums week in, week out? What about Italy, their football violence got so bad a couple of years ago that they had to postpone their whole league. Our hooligans need to seriously up their game to be considered the worst in the world

TheFairyCaravan · 08/07/2018 18:14

I wasn’t overly bothered at the start of the World Cup but now they’ve got this far it would be nice to win.

Our kids (21&23) are big football fans as are a lot of their mates none of them have been fighting or misbehaving, and they won’t do. They just want this group of blokes to do well. It’s the majority you’re tarring with the brush of the minority.

ProudAunty2nine · 08/07/2018 18:14

Bloody hell, sexism now ....

It is AIBU, OP?!
You've gotta be open to all points of view which may differ to yours. And, possibly, you did not come across as you had intended in your OP..

funnelfanjo · 08/07/2018 18:20

Hot weather also has a part to play in this. Major riots and unrest mainly happen in summer when it’s been hot. Something in our psychology I think that mob mentality has a greater impact, whether celebrations and parties or disaffection and protest.

jasjas1973 · 08/07/2018 18:20

@nancy75
Policing football in London alone costs £12m.... dont complain about lack of community Policing, if you are happy with this.
Sure the dark days of the 80s and 90s have lessened but the problem has not gone away.

geekone · 08/07/2018 18:20

I am SCOTTISH I want England to win and I will be watching.

The reports of crime over England yesterday show no spike in criminal activity or damage so pretty much a normal Saturday night out that was captured on camera this week due to the football.

I do not condone what they did it is awful and they should be named and shamed. Chances are they would have done this or something else whether the football was on or not.

If England lose then DV goes up by 12% this is not because all England supporters beat their partners when they lose it is because arsehole people who beat their partners will have an “excuse”. So let’s hope they win.

Gin0clock · 08/07/2018 18:21

I’m not sure if people are thinking that the young girl on the ambulance pictures are from ages ago; and that therefore the damaged ambulance didn’t happen, it did

If you go in here.

www.facebook.com/ukparamedichumour/?rc=p

There are videos posted in the comments section which show people on top of the ambulance car, and some naked bloke up a lamp post! I can’t save, copy or share them here or I would

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 08/07/2018 18:22

If you look in the background of the photo of the girl on the ambulance you'll see the shard being built.. a building that was completed years ago...

Absolutely not true. The Ambulance service appealed on Facebook last night to identify her and it's in all the papers today.

Grilledaubergines · 08/07/2018 18:23

My husband is half English and we are supporting England despite being evil Scottish people but my fears over Brexit (which Scotland didn’t bloody vote for) remain (if you’ll pardon the pun).

Why on earth do you describe yourself as ‘evil Scottish’? Why the negativity?

All my Irish family, living in Ireland want ‘anyone but England’ to win any sporting game but particularly football. I think they’re arseholes on this basis alone.

CharlieAustinsMagicHat · 08/07/2018 18:24

I’m extremely puzzled at the revelation that football is a thugs game for the poorly educated.

I’ll discuss it with the accountants and solicitors I watch it with next time and get back to you with our findings.

Racecardriver · 08/07/2018 18:24

Last night a drink driver smashed up our car. Thankfully it was parked up and we were all in bed. I also hope they loose the next game so that it can all be over.
