To Not Want England To Win The World Cup.

I am not English I am Welsh and rarely support English teams, but I have got caught up in the excitement of the teams achievements and until yesterday thought it would be fabulous if they did actually win the World Cup.

Then I saw the damage caused across the country but so called fans so called celebrating the quarter final win and thought God forbid they win what the hell will happen across country when the yobs celebrate that!

I also think that 'young lady' photographed jumping on an ambulance along with her companions and the ones photographed on bus shelters should be named shamed and charged with criminal damage and the same goes for anyone else who does not know how to celebrated in decent law abiding way.

This is a very disappointing reaction to what should be a happy and proud celebration

I’m seeing a lot more animosity towards non English people than towards English people. All the while bemoaning that they’re the victims of abuse. How ironic.

NanaNoodleman · 08/07/2018 18:43

I loathe football and the boorish culture associated with it but the current team and in particular Gareth Southgate seem to be doing a good job of moving it away from all that. He seems a genuinely modest, respectful and hard working guy. So I’m happy to support him, although not to the extent of actually watching any of it

TheMonkeyMummy · 08/07/2018 18:45

Whilst I don't give two hoots about football, and that the 'beautiful game' is multifaceted, with as many good point as dark sides, (i had a thread yesterday about the sexism) I don't believe that every single one of the football fans are utter hooligans. When there were riots in Newcastle, everyone I know was outraged. Hopefully the dickheads will be stamped out, along with the sexism, DV and other undesirable antisocial behaviour.

But I do think it is mean to say that you hope they don't win. Football (and all national teams) have the power to do a lot of good, if they choose to channel it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/07/2018 18:45

I don't suppose the people who despise the St George flag and the people who wave it, would ever dream of saying the same about any other country's flag or those who wave it.

There's a minority of English people who like to despise their own country, and often cite racism and colonialism as the reason - as if other countries weren't colonialists, certainly didn't behave any better, and have their own racist elements, too.

Vickymj · 08/07/2018 18:46

@RoseWhiteTips errr... yes jealousy, not that you would ever admit that

actuallyquitesmall · 08/07/2018 18:46

England needs a flag - everyone else has one and are able to be patriotic about it with no problems.

If not the flag of St George, what should it be?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/07/2018 18:46

@Racecardriver, I'm sorry your car was smashed up but you do realise drink driving happens at other times don't you? It doesn't only occur when England play.

Cutietips · 08/07/2018 18:47

Of course English people can be xenophobic Cornholio. But I wouldn’t defend them. Somehow it seems acceptable to be xenophobic to English people. And that’s what hacks people off.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:47

Jealousy!? Even more bonkers.

freegazelle · 08/07/2018 18:47

YANBU

Graphista · 08/07/2018 18:48

I'm another more concerned about behaviour if they lose.

Not an England fan - I'm a Scot, not even a footy fan. But DV spikes dramatically following footy disappointments.

I think there will be dreadful behaviour whatever the result, but I particularly fear for the partners of a certain type of 'fan' if they get as far as the final. Wouldn't be at all surprised (but extremely sad and angry) if there were even deaths directly correlating to this.

Damaged bus shelters while annoying is the LEAST of it.

Plus it's absolutely NOT just England fans that behave this way, various other countries have also had problems with hooliganism, vandalism and increase in Dv correlated to football events.

TheGreatCornholio · 08/07/2018 18:49

No one is jealous of you. Stop flattering yourselves.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:50

Imagine rampaging around in Ikea when your team actually WON!

Barking mad and out of control.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:52

Why rampage around in IKEA? Well OBVIOUSLY because you want to teach the entire Swedish nation a lesson!

🤣🤣

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 18:55

Gosh. So impressive!

derxa · 08/07/2018 18:55

football is a thugs game for the poorly educated.
Oh bog off. Grin
Anyway those of us who love football are enjoying the tournament. I'm Scottish and would like to see England win for a change. Just tone down the hype news outlets.

derxa · 08/07/2018 18:57

No tweets from Emily Thornberry this time?

BG2015 · 08/07/2018 18:57

I watched the match yesterday and I celebrated afterwards with friends at the pub. Everyone was in good spirits and there was no trouble.

I'm not a football fan but have enjoyed this tournament. I have a flag flying on my house (as do about 4 other people in our street). I'm not a yob but a 49 yr old very proud English woman enjoying a bit of something good going on in our country.

Can't believe this post Angry

DrMantisToboggan · 08/07/2018 19:00

Load of bollocks OP. The Welsh, Irish & Scottish never want England to win anything, whereas I have always supported our UK countries, up until a while ago when I was so naive as to think our home countries supported us.

Ireland is not one of ‘the U.K. countries’

I’ve always supported Scotland, Ireland and Wales in tournaments. Because I’m British as well as English.

Ireland is not part of Britain.

Vickymj · 08/07/2018 19:02

Exactly @BG2015.

We too have a flag on our house oh and I’m not a thug or racist, just love supporting England.

We all got together as a family and celebrated, all good spirited.

Justanotherlurker · 08/07/2018 19:04

Haven't read the thread but I presume its the same old nationalism bad when its british, ignore or make convoluted reasons as to why other nations having a sense of pride in their own country is good.

We could even be reaching hard and trying guilt by association and trying to tarnish anyone supporting England in the world cup with a small minority of dick heads whilst ignoring the rampant racism, homophobia, ultras and fuckwittery that happens every weekend during and after football in the said previous worldwide countries that they tied themselves up in contortions to support said nationalism.

Despite the op not wanting us to win the World cup, you may be surprised that there are many from Holland, Spain, Canada, America, Japan, China and further a field that are actually routing for us, and can separate politics, guilt by association or whatever left leaning self flagellation you enjoy in hating your own country and are wanting us to win.

If anyone on this thread has tried to imply inherent racism then the news obviously hasn't filtered through and you need to update your playbook.

In short, me as an non native non white woman and has been to many football games over the years will state I want England to win the world cup as it is obviously coming home!

And a small thing to note is that even if we do still lose on wednesday, the general mood of England fans will be of joy, so I would brace yourself for more pride on thursday despite the result.

Good luck OP

Vickymj · 08/07/2018 19:05

Oh so so sorry, Northern Ireland then! Silly me, I did always support Republic of Ireland too, that will teach me.

Cutietips · 08/07/2018 19:08

Northern Ireland is part of the UK and I support Ireland because it’s so close to the UK and obviously I know Ireland is a separate country and isn’t British but there are so many Irish people living here and playing in football teams here. I could have said all that but I thought people would know what I meant without me having to spell it out and accept the sentiments.

Midge75 · 08/07/2018 19:08

I do feel that people are misunderstanding the OP a bit. She still feels supportive of the team and what they have achieved, isn't worried about the entire country, or tarring all England fans with the same brush. She's just worried about what they yobbish minority might do if England win. It was just a comment, but a few people are taking it a little too much to heart.

It's lovely to see the majority of the country uniting in excitement.

DrMantisToboggan · 08/07/2018 19:08
Smile

Yes, Ireland and Northern Ireland are separate entities. Ireland is a sovereign independent state; Northern Ireland is a constituent part of the United Kingdom.

Glad to help.
