To Not Want England To Win The World Cup.

ProudAunty2nine · 08/07/2018 17:04

I am not English I am Welsh and rarely support English teams, but I have got caught up in the excitement of the teams achievements and until yesterday thought it would be fabulous if they did actually win the World Cup.

Then I saw the damage caused across the country but so called fans so called celebrating the quarter final win and thought God forbid they win what the hell will happen across country when the yobs celebrate that!

I also think that 'young lady' photographed jumping on an ambulance along with her companions and the ones photographed on bus shelters should be named shamed and charged with criminal damage and the same goes for anyone else who does not know how to celebrated in decent law abiding way.

This is a very disappointing reaction to what should be a happy and proud celebration

Now come on who wants to write those lyrics? Wink

The national anthem is a bloody dirge. everyones is better than ours isn’t it. Columbia’s was ace.

augustusglupe · 08/07/2018 21:57

I absolutely know what racism is Sakura06 and I stand by my comment.

StopPOP · 08/07/2018 22:00

I'm Welsh, DH is English.

Tbh we're more rugby than football but are also caught up in the fever. I'm fully behind England and hope they win. And DH would support Wales t'other way round.

My step father, on the other hand, is riding the "petty" bus. Despite the fact he spends every waking moment watching as much tv as is possible, he refuses to put an England game (of anything) on. Twat.

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/07/2018 22:01

Our National Anthem is an embarrassment. Every time it's played, I wonder why we cant get this awful drivel changed? It isn't rousing or positive or anything. Im not particularly a republican( More that I don't care enough) but Im hoping when Charlie is King or Wills maybe they agree to changing it.

Enger Lund, Enger Lund, Enger Lund na na
There you go, job done & plenty of time to learn it before Wednesday

hamandpease · 08/07/2018 22:14

Wait @CurlsLDN .... huh??

'If you look in the background of the photo of the girl on the ambulance you'll see the shard being built.. a building that was completed years ago...'

Your name suggests you're from London.. you know the top is supposed to look like that right..?

WowLookAtYou · 08/07/2018 22:25

you know the top is supposed to look like that right..?

It's not the top that's looking wrong. It's the open windows and half-finished cladding (?) on the sides. Windows that high up would not open, and it looks as if they're missing, as they might be during construction.

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/07/2018 22:28

Shes been identified, so it was definitely yesterday. The photos are being shared so many times on Twitter that the others are bound to be identified soon. Hope they are slapped with a hefty fine and hopefully a spell in prison. They will be absolutely ripped to pieces on Twitter too probably. Can't say I'm that bothered that they have probably made their own lives unbearable through their stupidity.

lostincake · 08/07/2018 22:31

So when a few England supporters behave badly it represents the England team and all English.

I wonder if you would apply the same logic to, for example, Islamic terrorists? Do you blame all Muslims for the actions of a few? If not, don't tar all English with the actions of a few, it's really hypocritical.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 22:32

Oh please. The entirety of England don't deserve to win because a couple of people acted like idiots? I can guarantee you if it was Wales in the semi finals, a few of your precious Welsh citizens (who obviously never do anything wrong) will have done some not great things too. I am so sick of hearing about how much 'I don't want England to win' from Irish/Scottish/Welsh. We clearly don't hate you as much as you hate us cause honestly if it was the other way round we'd be routing for you 100% as our neighbours.

TheGreatCornholio · 08/07/2018 22:34

We don't care if you would support us, nor do we expect you to.

Unihorn · 08/07/2018 22:45

Tbf when we did well in the Euros we were so fucking shocked we were just happy to be there. There was no large scale rioting. Also, as a few of us have stated, the other home nations' "issues" with English football lie with the awful media reporting on it.

sakura06 · 08/07/2018 22:47

I'm not sure whether some people are deliberately misreading the OP or not. OP has merely expressed concern about what could happen in the event of a victory, seeming as some fairly unpleasant behaviour happened yesterday in the wake of the quarter final victory. At no point did OP say all England fans act like this, or make any generalisation about England or their fans.

I feel in a civilised society, vandalism and violence and/or the potential for it should worry us all. Celebrating and taking joy in a great victory is one thing, but that's not an excuse to commit vandalism or violence.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 22:50

unihorn there hasn't been any large scale rioting now either.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 08/07/2018 22:54

I work with around a dozen Irish people who change their fb profile pic to the opposition flag for every match.
And continually slag off England and it's culture, people, nightlife I could go on.

I recognise that not every Irish person suffers the same mentality. Just like I realise that a handful of idiots yesterday shouldn't deflect from the millions of others who are enjoying the world cup without smashing anything up.

I would love England to win. I think it's really brought people together. Other than the aforementioned dickheads.

Cutietips · 08/07/2018 23:21

beautifulblue I agree with you. We don’t feel the hate. But I’m also sure that whatever TheGreatCornholio asserts they don’t speak for everyone in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as evidenced by many of the views on this thread. And the tons of Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh people I know that are, shock horror, married to English people and enjoy the banter but aren’t so arsey about it.

ProudAunty2nine · 08/07/2018 23:31

I thank Sakura06 for saying it so much better than I
Thank you Flowers

TheGreatCornholio · 08/07/2018 23:36

@cutietips wtf are you on about? Where have I said I hated anyone?

Cutietips · 09/07/2018 00:30

CornholioI was talking about you saying that you don’t care if we don’t support you and nor do you expect us to, as if you can speak for everyone in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Beautiful blue was talking about not hating you as you appear to hate us.

But if you think it makes sense to feel this way against a whole nation, there’s nothing really more to be said.

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 12:42

Cutielips, I rather think you are reading far too much into this. It is a game of football not a war.🤣

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 12:43

Correction:

Cutietips

Cutietips · 09/07/2018 14:29

Yes RoseWhiteTips because of course I’m overreacting because it’s just a football match Hmm When you brought up hating the English flag because of what it represents on the same thread.

Yes but you’re just having a laugh about football. And I should just simmer down. Patronising much.

Enb76 · 09/07/2018 14:36

I was in West Germany when they won the World Cup in 1990 - they were running over cars roofs and creating mayhem, sounding horns, all over the road, drunk and aggressive. As a 12 year old in the back of a car trying to get home it was bloody frightening. This kind of behaviour is not limited to one country.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 14:46

I was in Geneva in 1990 and I vividly remember riots between Italian fans and West German fans. I was 8, standing on the balcony of our hotel, scared out of my wits.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 09/07/2018 14:48

I so hope we win.

But if we do the level of excitement combined with excess drinking will make some people behave very recklessly. there will be mayhem I imagine.

Maybe we should ban the world cup then, as people just can't be trusted to be sensible??

98% though of us will watch with family & friends, drink responsibly or not all, and get very emotional watching if we win.

Yes, there will be stupidity, show me a country where there wouldn't be if they won??

It's like punishing the whole class for the behaviour of a few children.
