To Not Want England To Win The World Cup.

I am not English I am Welsh and rarely support English teams, but I have got caught up in the excitement of the teams achievements and until yesterday thought it would be fabulous if they did actually win the World Cup.

Then I saw the damage caused across the country but so called fans so called celebrating the quarter final win and thought God forbid they win what the hell will happen across country when the yobs celebrate that!

I also think that 'young lady' photographed jumping on an ambulance along with her companions and the ones photographed on bus shelters should be named shamed and charged with criminal damage and the same goes for anyone else who does not know how to celebrated in decent law abiding way.

This is a very disappointing reaction to what should be a happy and proud celebration

Today 18:57 BG2015

I watched the match yesterday and I celebrated afterwards with friends at the pub. Everyone was in good spirits and there was no trouble.

I'm not a football fan but have enjoyed this tournament. I have a flag flying on my house (as do about 4 other people in our street). I'm not a yob but a 49 yr old very proud English woman enjoying a bit of something good going on in our country.

Well said Football

Cantspell2 · 08/07/2018 20:45

This is a working class estate in Bermondsey. The whole estate has been decorated since the start of the World Cup. The residents were asked beforehand if any had objections and residents have flown their own flags along side the flag of st George.

Please don’t try to tell me that this estate is a bastion of white raseism as I have family who have lived there for years and a more diverse community would be hard to find.

nancy that’s not the kind of bias unihorn is talking about! Of course the home commentators will favour the home team. The problem is that neither they nor the wider media support home nations other than England to the same degree.

trueblueari · 08/07/2018 20:50

Worry not OP, Croatia will put an end to it on Wednesday. Then win the World Cup. Grin

Note: I'm not one of the "Anyone but England" crowd, I've been supporting Croatia from the onset and would likely have supported them over Scotland too.

Mayday01 · 08/07/2018 20:50

This was a minority of fans, who probably would have found something else criminal to do if the excuse wasn't football.
It pisses me off when all the other home nations can wave their flags around all they like and be proud, but if it's England doing it, a load of politics and guilt tripping is brought into it.
I'm Welsh by the way. And supporting the England team.
Alright the media can be a bit much, I can't see them being that bothered if it was Wales, Scotland etc. Maybe we'll find out in Qatar Grin

SPOFS · 08/07/2018 20:53

Yes. How dare the working classes have something to celebrate?

There's a lot of classism on this thread

Itchytights · 08/07/2018 20:53

I can only imagine the absolute uproar if somebody dared to find another country’s flag offensive, and to vocalise it, but yet somehow some arseholey folk think that it’s okay to tell us that they find our national flag, in England, offensive.

Well you can fuck off to the far side of fuck and stay there for all I care, preferably moving yourself to a different part of the country where you won’t have to associate with us “English “

Tsssssskk.

Yanbu. I think the players have done brilliantly and I like Gareth Southgate but if we were to win we would never ever hear the end of it. People still go on about 1966! There's an obsession attached to football that you don't get with other sports. Also, I agree that sadly the English flag has been hijacked by the far right. I still feel proud when I see the Union Jack but the English flag has been spoilt for me by the likes of Tommy Robinson.

StoorieHoose · 08/07/2018 21:08

To the PP who complained that Scotland Wales and NI all hated the English - you do realise that we don’t hate YOU or any other English person in the slightest (give or take a few morons on each side). What the VAST majority of us do hate is the media hype that goes with thr English Teams success

It is fucking relentless and I would bet my house that if is was Scotland who was in the semis (v unlikely I know) that the media would be the same it would be relegated to shitting Reporting Scotland and certainly would not be talked about for 2 hours the morning of the Match apart from Lorraine Kelly mentioning it!

I have asked on several threads now WHY English people would support Scotland Wales or N Ireland and no one has actually told me why? I feel it’s quite condescending (not that we will get anywhere near any finals in the near future)

Seasawride · 08/07/2018 21:11

its a thugs game

So is that watched by thugs, or played by thugs. So that would be millions and millions of men women and children world wide then?

You really are sounding very silly arnt you.

Fancy being so bloody miserable and joyless.

Come on England.

Seasawride · 08/07/2018 21:14

ChildrenOftheSin

Utter bollocks. Loads of English flags around here and I live in a very multicultural area. That old Harping on about the flag is in the past. It really is.

nancy75 · 08/07/2018 21:16

StoorieHoose I support Scotland, Wales, Ireland & N Ireland because I see them all as our home nations ( and yes I know Ireland is totally separate to us)
I live in London, I know loads of Scottish & Irish people. The best way I can explain it is if my next door neighbour & some bloke from Sweden were having a race, I’d support the next door neighbour!

chrysalis7 · 08/07/2018 21:17

YABU! They HAVE to win it. We deserve it, and we need it!

jasjas1973 · 08/07/2018 21:17

Well you can fuck off to the far side of fuck and stay there for all I care, preferably moving yourself to a different part of the country where you won’t have to associate with us English

This sentence pretty much sums up the English football fan.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating the cross of St George, especially as he was a Turk with Syrian origins.

Of course we are not 3 separate nations, we are the United Kingdom, one country and have one flag to rally around, the Union Jack.or Union flag if you prefer.

sakura06 · 08/07/2018 21:17

@augustusglupe I'm not sure you quite understand what racism is... It's most definitely NOT when a person from a different nation doesn't support your football team.

@SPOFS I'm not sure it's classism either to take issue with people trashing an ambulance. I grew up loving football, and had a deprived childhood at times, but I wouldn't dream of committing this kind of vandalism, least of all on an emergency services vehicle.

There are definitely problematic elements amongst English football fans (as with other nations). But I agree with OP that this kind of thuggish behaviour AFTER a great victory, in a superbly played match, by a dynamic and engaging young team is mind-boggling and concerning.

StoorieHoose · 08/07/2018 21:18

But surely you are closer geographically to France than Scotland. So we are like a neighbour that lives on the same estate than your next door neighbour?

TheFaerieQueene · 08/07/2018 21:18

This is a very odd perspective. I’m English but not in the slightest bit interested in football and haven’t watched any of the World Cup. I won’t be watching this week either. However, I am aware that for a huge swathe of the population this is important and I hope for them that England do well. The behaviour of a tiny tiny proportion should not detract from that and to hope for England to lose because of them is bizarre.

nancy75 · 08/07/2018 21:18

The English flag was high jacked decades ago, events like this help us claim it back

chrysalis7 · 08/07/2018 21:19

Agree that it's a tiny minority who are being idiots.

And there are some horrible judgemental comments on here about the working classes, and football fans.

You should be ashamed of yourselves. Hmm

Cantspell2 · 08/07/2018 21:19

If Scotland made a semi final in the World Cup then no there would not be a 2 hour match report on English morning tv but I bet there would be a 2 hour match report on Scottish tv. In the same way that if France make the semis French tv will have a full match report that we won’t.

Scotland keeps telling us that they are a separate country to England so why would they expect English telly to give the same level of reporting to a non English event?

StoorieHoose · 08/07/2018 21:20

Of course we are not 3 separate nations, we are the United Kingdom, one country and have one flag to rally around, the Union Jack.or Union flag if you prefer.

MILLIONS of people will disagree with that one!

StoorieHoose · 08/07/2018 21:22

cantspell there is NO such thing as English tv (apart from regional variation). I’m talking about BBC Breakfast Telly which is broadcast to Scotland as well as England

nancy75 · 08/07/2018 21:23

StoorieHoose I’m never going to support France Grin Yes, geographically close than Scotland but not culturally. Scotland, England, Wales & N Ireland are part of a union, we should be like a group of mates that support each other. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but it would be nice if we could see each other that way
