To think this new fashion looks stupid

Sliders and socks, I just can’t stand it, I think it looks bloody stupid and defeats the object of sliders. All my sisters friends do it, all the local kids wear it. It’s just one of them things that pisses me off in an instant. If I wore this when I was at school I would have got severely mocked.
Any other popular fashion you don’t like?

I would call the first image a pool shoe or slides & the 2nd slides but not pool shoes.

I think sliders should just look like they could be used at the pool or at the beach. Not trying to make them posh evening wear. I also think there aren't many more comfortable or uglier things in this world than pool sliders with socks.

19lottie82 · 03/07/2018 23:50

They’re called slides (not sliders).

Terramirabilis · 03/07/2018 23:52

Slides and socks are a "gangster" look here in the U.S. According to [[http://www.konbini.com/us/lifestyle/origins-of-socks-and-sandals-fashion-trend/ this article]], it may come from black men's aversion to having their feet bare in sandals due to the association with slaves being barefoot. I think this has then been filtered through fashion houses to become a street style thing in Britain. As someone mentioned above, it's basically poverty chic: American projects (housing estates)>>>Celine or some French fashion house of that time>>>British suburban teens.

Annoying link fail but you can still click it.

PickAChew · 03/07/2018 23:52

Man thing, surely?

Terramirabilis · 03/07/2018 23:53

*kind, not time. Where is the edit button?

Fadingmemory · 03/07/2018 23:54

Socks and sandals or socks and sliders - just not a good look at all.

NKFell · 04/07/2018 00:04

The person who wrote that article has to be a white woman.

I love my sliders and socks!

MissConductUS · 04/07/2018 00:06

IncyWincyGrownUp I call them flip flops too

Flip flops is the standard term in the US. I have also heard them called getas, after the Japanese footwear which is similar.

I feel so old, I had no idea this was a new fashion trend?! I have a brand new pair of "sliders" that DH bought me last year but I sneered at because they are basically Birkenstock shower shoes (plasticky foam feeling birkenstocks) but now I learn that if I wear long socks with them I am the height of fashion?!

I doubt I could pull it off. I'm only late 20s but I feel I look too mumsy sob to pull off new fashions like these.

EdWinchester · 04/07/2018 00:18

I’m in the US at mo - all the teen boys wear sliders and shin length socks. It’s been a (dodgy) look here for years.

Really hate the furry ones. It utterly chavvy. I know that’s a swear word on MN, but it is.

SarfE4sticated · 04/07/2018 00:22

I can't bear the ripped jeans, holey jumper thing that All Saints did a while ago. One of my colleagues wore the look one day and it looked like she had been attached by Wolverine.
Am very old though.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 04/07/2018 06:27

@nkfell yes I am white, although not sure how that’s even relevant 🤔

Comfort is more important than fashion - well, it is to me, which is why you'd see me in ballerina shoes with socks (yes, I know - that really is criminal) but in my defence I try to make sure the colours match. With my sensitive feet I'd find corns or blisters a bigger thing to worry about.

The modern fashion I absolutely loathe are 'cold shoulders.'

SoupDragon · 04/07/2018 07:17

it looked like she had been attached by Wolverine.

That’s one of my dreams... but only if it’s Hugh Jackman.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2018 07:29

They're slides (no 'r') or mules to me. It's a sporty look, with the white calf-length socks, which seems to be why something so ludicrous is appealing to boys. If it's sandals weather, t'int socks weather.

It makes me think of the skater boy look in the 90s - shorts and woolly hat. My body couldn't cope with such contradictory signals.

Ronnyhotdog · 04/07/2018 07:38

I’ve been wearing flip flops & sock for years (around the house) bit like snoop dog. Ds who’s 19 didn’t appreciate me pointing out he’s taking fashion tips from his old mum.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 04/07/2018 10:23

@NKFell, the only people I've seen wearing this new variation of socks and sandals have been white.

NKFell · 04/07/2018 11:46

@Sophisticatedsarcasm my comment was referring to the article on konbini.com- the writer seems to be explaining why black people do something.

@IntelligentYetIndecisive well like I said I wear them, I happen to be black but I don’t think it’s because of my blackness- it’s because I’m down with the kids Grin

slippermaiden · 04/07/2018 13:08

My son has a pair, but he wears them without socks.... I've told him he looks like a Polish man in the sauna at the gym! And as for the girls furry ones, no way!

RideOn · 04/07/2018 13:26

38 yrs old and never heard them called slides or sliders before! Flip flops or sandals.
Every day is a school day.

Annette69 · 04/07/2018 17:38

This was the fashion about 2 summers ago - not now.

ChocOrCheese · 04/07/2018 17:47

I thought they were called slides, not sliders. There was an article on foot health in The Times a couple of days ago and the advice was to wear socks with slides/sliders/placcy sandals.

Missbrick1 · 04/07/2018 17:52

This was the fashion about 2 summers ago - not now. It normally takes a year for a trend to become mainstream.
