To think this new fashion looks stupid

Sliders and socks, I just can’t stand it, I think it looks bloody stupid and defeats the object of sliders. All my sisters friends do it, all the local kids wear it. It’s just one of them things that pisses me off in an instant. If I wore this when I was at school I would have got severely mocked.
Any other popular fashion you don’t like?

Anyone else remember those Scholl mules with the wooden sole in the 70s? My mum wore those constantly in the Summer of 76.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 03/07/2018 12:48

I think it’s a fashion which came from US prisons. I know quite a few prisons over there give the inmates slides because you can’t run fast or kick someone hard while wearing them, and if it’s cold you wear socks with them because it’s that or have frozen feet.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 03/07/2018 12:52

I'm with @IncyWincyGrownUp it was just 2 sorts of flip flops when I was growing up, giving them a fancy name doesn't stop them being hideous

longwayoff · 03/07/2018 12:55

Bad fashion. Slugbrows and fishlips. Why would you?

TSSDNCOP · 03/07/2018 12:58

Sliders have been sliders for at least 23 years when I first bought a pair, not the same as flip flops at all.

Birdsgottafly · 03/07/2018 12:59

I thought that Sliders was an Americanism.

We used to call everything that wasn't sandals, flip-flops, or toe-posts.

Or if you were buying for a holiday, pool-shoes.

The ripped jeans are getting out of hand, they are more like pieces of string, attached to a bum bit.

I get my lips done, but only to give me back what I've lost because of the Menopause. But I think that, as with anything cosmetic, it's up to the individual.

Roxie33 · 03/07/2018 13:03

I laugh at my stepson for wearing sliders and socks he's 21 but it's all the rage now. Socks and sandals remind me of my grandfather old man style socks and sandals 🤣🤣 each to there own I guess not for me though

tentative3 · 03/07/2018 13:28

this is a thing now? First it was wearing tracksuits not in the gym, then it was 'pyjamas' outside no they're basically wearing house skippers with socks. What next? Face mask make up? Eye masks as headbands. Fussy dressing gowns for winter coats?

I have a felted dressing gown which I wear as a coatigan. No one ever twigs it's a dressing gown and it gets loads of compliments.

Surely everyone was happily calling them flip-flops before??

I was born in the early 80's and we called them 'slides' or 'sliders' too. Never wore them though! Still wouldn't

NKFell · 03/07/2018 14:29

I'm wearing sliders and socks today Grin

If they have a toe post, they're flip flops. The Adidas slip ons are sliders in my world.

DiegoMadonna · 03/07/2018 14:40

I presume it's just a regional thing. I've never heard the word sliders in my life. They're just different types of flip-flop.

MaireadMacSweeney · 03/07/2018 14:43

Yes, I had a few pairs I wore all the time when it was warm enough, we called them 'exercise sandals' or 'Scholl sandals'

I got a bewildered look from my teen grandaughter when I called sliders mules.
To me, sliders are ice creams between two wafers.

Orlandointhewilderness · 03/07/2018 14:44

I think some people (including me!) have missed the other photo! Op has put two up, one shows flip flops and the other shows these slider thingys!

mrjoepike · 03/07/2018 14:45

slides have been around,in current form since the 70s.nike i think introduced them for wearing in public showers to avoid foot infections.atheletes foot etc, remember seeing them in pro sports locker rooms first.just like flipflops which were called shower shoes ,too
.in jails they came into being as a cheaper alternative to trainers/canvas sneakers actually.couldn't let them wear personal footwear-boots because of injurys to others.expensive nikes or cons or vans cuz they got stolen.uniformity.lots of guys in prison wear them because the shoes issued are shit and hurt/or because wearing full on shoes being indoors is crazy and ya can't go barefoot.the socks because prison floors are cold.

BrownBeltMartialFartist · 03/07/2018 14:46

I suddenly understand why there was a girl wearing (what I thought were) fluffy topped slippers in the shop the other day. It looked like she had just kicked a pink chicken with glue on her feet and all I thought was how hard it would be to pick all the little bits of dirt out the feathery stuff. Blush

henpeckedinchief · 03/07/2018 14:46

Give it all the fancy bollocks names you like, it’s still a flip flop

Flip flops go between the big toe and next toe, sliders are a band over the foot. Totally different shoes!

SenecaFalls · 03/07/2018 14:51

I thought that Sliders was an Americanism.

They are usually called slides in the US, not sliders. I have some because I cannot stand flip flops as the toe post drives me crazy. I don't wear them with socks though.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 03/07/2018 14:54

Damn i thought this might be about ugly cycling shorts ...

FishFingerInjury · 03/07/2018 14:55

If you think that’s bad, I was in Hackney the other day and all the hipsters were wearing Tevas with socks. A whole new level of socks and sandals.

MoistCantaloupe · 03/07/2018 14:55

I don't really understand the aggro about sliders being a word. It's a helpful distinction to two different styles of shoes.

You know you're really old when you start moaning about what the youngsters are wearing these days.

Tara336 · 03/07/2018 14:59

Urgh not seen anyone do this yet but agree it look awful, as do the ridiculous thick black eyebrows, fluffy sliders and those enormous bows on girls. Also can I add the certain speech that’s evolved? As in can I get rather than could I have? And my all time pet hate is someone asking a question and adding No on the end!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/07/2018 15:05

I think hair rollers and headscarves will make a come back soon. Definitely rocking the Hilda Ogden look.

extinctspecies · 03/07/2018 15:10

YANBU OP.

DS is very style conscious & bought some expensive white Nike sliders. Which he wears with white sports socks.

I have told him it looks awful, but he won't listen.

Socks & sandals = just, no
