To think this new fashion looks stupid

Sliders and socks, I just can’t stand it, I think it looks bloody stupid and defeats the object of sliders. All my sisters friends do it, all the local kids wear it. It’s just one of them things that pisses me off in an instant. If I wore this when I was at school I would have got severely mocked.
Any other popular fashion you don’t like?

The funniest thing is those who pay a fortune to wear Havianas - errr they are just flip flops for people who have more money than sense !

Effendi · 04/07/2018 21:25

I've got to 49 and never heard of sliders, and I live in a hot country.
To me they are flip flops with or without the toe thing.

BG2015 · 04/07/2018 21:34

My DS whose 15 went round to his friends to watch the football last night in black Adidas sliders and white socks.

I thought it was a joke but it's actually a 'thing'

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 04/07/2018 22:18

My sister actually takes hers to school to change when she finishes..... seriously one of them things that just makes me mad instantly..... 🙈

I'm waiting for the 1980's v neck jumpers to come back worn backwards - I remember this from the 1980's - no one else can though so it must've been a local thing

Doman · 04/07/2018 22:46

Not sure what you would have made of my footwear last winter, then!

We all used to wear sliders with socks at sports matches/meets in the US in the early 00s. SO comfy when you’ve been in cleats for an hour and you slip your fluffy athletic socks into a pair of sliders... Grin

ArtieMae · 05/07/2018 08:06

I hate this socks and sliders thing too. What makes it even worse is that the socks have to be knee length sports socks!! Ugly and a contradiction as summer shoes with winter socks! My teenage son has been doing it for a couple of years now. He’s emulating his music rapper idols. Case of the Emperors New Clothes methinks. It looks daft but the young just swept away with it. If us middle aged parents had started this fashion they would have rightly mocked us!

letsgomaths · 05/07/2018 09:04

Just a small tangent: in the 90's, was it the done thing to wear trainers without socks, before trainer liners came in? I remember everyone doing it at secondary school; both for PE and non-uniform days, magazines always showed people with trainers on bare feet. Was that the "socks and sliders" then? I don't remember teenagers ever wearing flip flops or sliders in the 90s, with or without socks, it was always trainers, and that was at a time when they might be mugged off your feet as well.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/07/2018 09:13

Trainer socks with Pom poms were around in the 90s. But yes, bare feet.

BuggeringNora · 05/07/2018 09:20

Interestingly, this is not a fashion that has gained any traction amongst the posher echelons of society. I work in a very naice part of London, and I can confirm that absolutely none of the teenagers / youngsters are wearing this look. I asked my colleague’s two kids, (aged 17 and 19), what they thought of it, and they both pissed themselves laughing and said it was ‘fucking hideous’.
Disclaimer - I am not posh, I just work amongst the posh. I also think this look is ridiculous though.

missyB1 · 05/07/2018 09:26

Sandals and socks, a hideous combination best left to men over the age of 60.

Unfinishedkitchen · 05/07/2018 09:57

I think the look originated from gang bangers in the 90s in LA. I recognise the look from watching rap videos on the 90s. They’d wear the socks and sliders, shorts , plaid shirts with one button done up top with a white t-shirt underneath and a bandana. They also invented the low slung jeans that show your boxer shorts - it was a way of showing other men in jail that you were up for some bum fun.

ThankYouGillian · 05/07/2018 10:04

@Thisisnotreallymyname , Havaianas are worth it (although I must admit I wouldn't pay full rrp for them) They are comfortable and they just don't break, unlike the cheaper versions.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/07/2018 10:22

I said upthread I remember very clearly it being a thing of the 80’s. Possibly latter part of the 80’s though. These are original 1980’s according to the photo. These with socks was deffo a trend back then where I lived but it was near London. Up north was years behind at the time. Possibly why it was remembered as a 90’s thing?

I saw a young woman wearing fluffy slipper mules in the street the other day. Certainly made me look twice as they were definitely slippers rather than sandals. Looked comfy but odd like you have forgotten to wear your shoes 😂

Snowysky20009 · 05/07/2018 10:37

*Yesterday 19:00 3out

Incy, I think gillets became bodywarmers because people couldn’t say gillet properly. They are still called gillets by the Girlguiding association. Every week ‘girls, don’t forget to take your gill-its home!’ Does my head in 😂*

Yes yes yes! The pronunciation! I cringe when I hear 'gill-its'!

For me, yep furry sliders- there was a young women at the doctors this morning wearing them and they looked terrible. Another is slug eyebrows- why? Just why?

I swear some men must go to bed with a women and by the time she's taken out her hair extensions, wiped off the slugs, washed her tan off, taken off her eyelashes and removed her chicken fillets, they wake up in the morning, scream and say 'who the f* are you??' 🤷🏻‍♀️

blueskypink · 05/07/2018 10:48

I presume the name flip flop is onomatopoeic because that's the sound your (bare) feet make when you walk in them. Sliders (presumably so called because you slide your feet into them) hold your feet in place more and don't have a toe post. Altogether a different beast.

DS2 has been wearing socks and sliders for about 18 months now. Didn't realise it was a fashion!

MachineBee · 06/07/2018 08:06

I’m a big FitFlop fan but couldn’t understand why some of their most expensive footwear was ‘fluffy slippers’ ‘As seen in Vogue’ Now I understand. www.fitflop.com/uk/en/shop/womens-technology-microwobbleboard-uk/loosh-luxe-shearling-leather-slide-sandals-p-M04-535

LucheroTena · 06/07/2018 08:10

It’s an old skool rap thing and unlike most fashions I am extremely envious as it looks very comfy. Sadly I would just look like a mad old lady.

Icapturethecast1e · 15/07/2018 12:41

It's how lot of people in parts of South Asia wear their slippers so not particularly odd or new.

Roachella · 16/07/2018 18:11

Once - I don't know why (honest!) - I put on socks and sandals. This was so comfortable - warm yet ventilated.
I only do it at home where I won't be seen.
I have told my eldest that if he finds me dead so dressed, he's to remove the sandals.
