New articlr in the guardian, going to read now, I'm sorry because shes generally really popular with all my female mates but...I just find her really annoying and disingenuous and anti-intellectual. Is it just me? Her (faux) grey streak also annoys me, as does the face pulling. Anyway i know its mean, but i just dont identify

If she’s started writing for the guardian YANBU!

raisedbyguineapigs · 16/06/2018 14:50

Yes I find her the same. She has probably written about 2 things that I thought were genuinely good, but the rest I find false. I had a patch of hair fall out a few months ago and was hoping it would grow back in a grey streak but it didn't, so I dont like her for that now either Grin

toolonglurking · 16/06/2018 14:55

I bought one of her books on audible and within ten minutes realised it was utter shite and returned it.

violetgrey · 16/06/2018 14:55

I don’t get the love for her either. And her gurning on social media is annoying. She is one of those:”look at me, I’m mad me”kind of people.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 14:56

Well she clearly dyes the rest so just fucking die it, it's like the grey streak is supposed to make us think the rest is natural. I think that and the gurning (designed to prevent the camera capturing her at an unflattering angle while just being "normal") contradicts her 'feminist' message. I mean just be real.

I cant say exactly what it is that i find so irritating; maybe i feel like shes 20 years too late with what shes saying.

YANBU. I think she's just a massive attention seeker. Very false. Not too keen on her 'bestie' Sali Hughes either.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 16/06/2018 14:58

I agree. She's disingenuous, transphobic and insincere and she's far more invested in advancing the wellbeing of her best pals than women generally. She gets absolutely lauded for her feminism despite the fact that her particular brand of it is shallow and about ten years out of date. She doesn't deserve half of the praise and attention she gets imo.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 14:58

@HildaZelda
Oh really thats her bestie? Salie "let me sell you more shit" Hughues?

OP posts:
LartenCrepsley · 16/06/2018 14:59

I’m not keen, she tries too hard to make feminism sexy.
I did enjoy Raised By Wolves, though.

ProudThrilledHappy · 16/06/2018 15:00

I feel like she is trying to speak for all women, but in that “I’m so woke and totally cool, you should be too” way. She reminds me of Lena Dunham, I don’t know why

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 15:03

@MyOtherUsernameisaPun
Yup I feel like i would have lapped her stuff up when I was 13 and it was 2000.

Sadly its two decades later and i think we're beyond the "lets have a crude giggle about our vagges, girls!" stage.

I admire no bullshit feminists like GG. You may disagree with her views but at least shes straight down the line. I dont like this smirky smirky "toss the word cunt around wear heavy eye liner and pretend im a rock n roll figurehead of the next chapter in feminism" kind of attitude. Just write a serious fucking article.

MaisyPops · 16/06/2018 15:04

I liked How to be a Woman. It was amusing and different when it came out.

Everything else she's written seems to be quite hit and miss and very much 'ooh I'm so unique and mad'.

PlatypusPie · 16/06/2018 15:05

I enjoy some of her columns in the Saturday Times mag and the In and out ( or Up and Down? ) in the weekend supplement - has a good turn of phrase and does make me think of things in another way sometimes. But then she will write a lecturing, hectoring one that will turn me right off and I ignore her until I get drawn back in again.

HollowTalk · 16/06/2018 15:05

I always feel really uneasy with her, as though I'm in an empty train carriage and someone completely nuts has just come and sat bang up next to me and won't stop talking.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 15:06

@ProudThrilledHappy
She reminds you of lena dunham because its that whole "hey i want to have an edgy shock factor feeling and be like yay feminism, but i also want people to like me" factor.

To be fair to her it’s possible - I have one a la The Mallen Streak Grin

*I liked How to be a Woman. It was amusing and different when it came out.

Agree with all this.

NotARegularPenguin · 16/06/2018 15:10

She’s fairly well up her own arse. But I think a lot of those sort of brand of journalists are and they get worse over the years. They’re paid to write a load of inane drivel about their own lives (I’m mainly thinking about her page in The Times magazine on a Saturday here). The sort of stuff which if a friend was telling me about 99% of the time I wouldn’t be interested in but would nod politely.

And of course with such a wide audience, a load of Twitter fawners, an editor who can’t seem to point out its shit and a decent pay check I guess it all goes to your head.

HildaZelda · 16/06/2018 15:14

@Tangled59, that'd be her.

harriethoyle · 16/06/2018 15:16

The ludicrous face pulling drives me NUTS

SandlakeRd · 16/06/2018 15:19

I used to love CM and she has written some very good stuff on feminism and left wing politics in general.

However I agree she is rapidly disappearing up her own arse. She still does have a good turn of phrase when she puts her mind to it but she needs to develop and move on! Janice Turner is my new idol. She is excellent.

SlothSlothSloth · 16/06/2018 15:19

I find her feminism very lightweight. She’s obviously very anxious about making it as man-friendly as possible and she’s not interested in thinking about systemic problems and solutions. And despite her upbringing in a fairly poor home, I think she has been very fortunate in a lot of other ways and often displays a lack of understanding about the fact this isn’t the case for most women.

EdWinchester · 16/06/2018 15:21

I simply can't stand her.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 15:23

She’s got a sycophantic mass of fans on mn who all arse lick if she appears

IHeartKingThistle · 16/06/2018 15:25

Or, we could just appreciate that there is one more feminist in the world putting stuff out there IN CAPITAL LETTERS and writing about important things and doing it in an accessible way. You know, instead of dragging down a fellow woman and bitching about her hair. Just saying.

LapdanceShoeshine · 16/06/2018 15:28

CM & JT both used to post on here when their kids were younger. CM once reposnded to me asking whether I should let 15-yr-old DS go to a festival (of course she said yes Grin)

(Her writing & broadcasting annoys the hell out of me too though)
