New articlr in the guardian, going to read now, I'm sorry because shes generally really popular with all my female mates but...I just find her really annoying and disingenuous and anti-intellectual. Is it just me? Her (faux) grey streak also annoys me, as does the face pulling. Anyway i know its mean, but i just dont identify

I think the 'transphobic' could be linked to her liking a tweet by another writer who veered into gender critical thinking...I'm not too hot on posting links but it's a fairly current thread on the feminism board. Something about a tweet from David Aaronovitch.
I did wonder if this thread might be less than a co-incidence.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 17:16

@JobQuery
GG has said "some bad things"?
Like what?

OP posts:
DameXanaduBramble · 16/06/2018 17:16

Completely irritating - I can tell a lot about a person if they like her and her buddies, I usually find them irritating too.

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 17:16

honest, you could be categorised as transphobe for not liking a dress that Grayson Perry wore to Sainsburys. its that trivial and hysterical atm.

I am more concerned that young women are being promoted sexual practices that are not in their interests. But I'm not sure Caitlin Moran is writing about that hot potato.

wildbhoysmama · 16/06/2018 17:19

I agree that she is a bit of stereotype and, perhaps, needs to extend her writing to new topics. That said, he two pieces on libraries are fantastically well written.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 17:21

@ExtraTime
I also think its the wrong way round. Maybe young women should have an opportunity to read in depth and reflect on how we got to this situation in the first place, and explore some feminist ideas, before going straight into "hey, just call your vagina a cunt and try masturbating" territory. Because otherwise its causing a (shaky) reaction to something that isnt fully understood.

Caitlin’s now been branded ‘transphobic’ Confused I thought the usual complaint about her, was that although she was felt to be GC, she wasn’t touching that one with a barge pole as she just wanted to be known for the lolz?

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 17:22

alot of the time, her version of life is a slightly more ironic view/experience of GirlsGoneWild tbf. not that she's done it herself. married early and long ...

Problematique · 16/06/2018 17:26

Yeah about cliquey... There is nothing more cliquey than bonding over "no I don't like her eeeeeeither".

Nasty thread.

I like her. She is good at unpacking truth. Also as someone who grew up a bit council too, seeing her writing in the music press inspired me.

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 17:29

@ExtraTime
Holy shit yeah, so she met her husband her husband at 17 and married him at 24. Which is lovely. But its also hardly sticking it to the system or experimenting with riding loads of cocks like the liberated young women she seeks to counsel Hmm

OP posts:
LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 17:30

Problematique are you seriously suggesting a group of posters who concur is nasty & cliquey?
So ,Let’s say there’s another thread, posters praising Caitlin..is that cliquey?

Growingboys · 16/06/2018 17:32

Like your style LipstickHandbagCoffee!

Pisses me off the way every time someone disagrees with someone else on MN they use the word 'nasty' to diminish them.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 17:35

Ahh yes,and women expressing an opinion someone dislikes is bitchy or bitching
Pejorative terms to minimise women’s discourse

JobQuery · 16/06/2018 17:35

Dissapointly (for me) I think CM is very much of the transwomen are women, 100% camp. I find it strange though as all of her books are rooted firmly in the female expereince. Birth, miscarriage, abortion, periods, masturbation, sex etc. But she specifically goes to the effort to say we should let them in the club.

tangled I didn't say some bad things, I said spectacularly bad. ANd I think they are. But you've surely heard of them all before.
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/535488.stm

Her views on #metoo and the comment she has made on child marriage all veer in to completly wrong territory.. that doesn't mean she isn't great. I don't have to agree with every fucking thing she says. It's the current problem at the moment where GG or Margaret Atwood are being ripped to pieces for not doing feminism "the right way". It's utter shit.

JobQuery · 16/06/2018 17:37

Holy shit yeah, so she met her husband her husband at 17 and married him at 24.

How fucking dare she Grin Hmm

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 17:37

I grew up "council". Not in a jazz-musician, home-schooled, lifestyle-on-benefits kinda way though. Just sayin'. I find her about as inspiring as a hard boiled egg.

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 17:38

Job, thats not the point Tangled was trying to make - its just she promotes an image she doesn't live.

MsJinglyJones · 16/06/2018 17:39

Anyway we don't all concur. The thread has a lot of views, some praising her, some criticising, some a mixture.

JobQuery · 16/06/2018 17:40

I don't rseem to recall her ever claming to have ridden loads of cocks in her 20s and 30s. So she's not promoting any image like that all.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 17:41

And that’s the point, lively discussion with a range of views

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 17:44

She used to call herself a sex pirate or something!Grin

I think there is room for all types of feminist writers...your accessible "FEMINISM IS BLOODY OBVIOUS LADIES" Moran types, and your more nuanced, intelligent writers who tackle systematic oppression...they all have a place. After all it's a fucking massive subject and the more voices the better imo. We wouldn't say oh there can only be on type of travel writer...

For me the real issue for feminists is not whether or not you shave your pubes (do what you want), but systematic oppression which still resulted gaping equality...particularly financial.

Caitlin Moran (and Sali Hughes) do working class women a massive disservice when they repeatedly use their working class upbringings to give themselves credit, whilst at the same having seemingly so little interest in the current political climate. Fair enough they might not like Jeremy Corbyn, but if your real concern is equality surely your political priority should be using your readership to attack the current government? I never see her do this...

And yeah she 'pulled yourself out of poverty', but how is she using her influence to help other working class women?

specialsubject · 16/06/2018 17:46

if the wikipedia account of her childhood is correct, impressed that she even learnt to read and write. no education after eleven.

her basic science isnt very good but that goes for many on here who got their full time at school but clearly flicked their hair throughout.
