Why doesn't anyone want my cat?

I've posted this in The Litter Tray, but am also cheekily posting here for traffic.

Hello,

I have to, reluctantly, give up my 2-year-old Maine Coon boy. For personal reasons I can no longer provide him a suitable home.

I've put up an advert on Pets4Homes, and NO-ONE is interested. He's a friendly energetic boy, GCCF registered, neutered, up to date with all of his jags, cuddly if you catch him in the right mood, and completely gorgeous.

AIBU to think SOMEONE would be interested in rehoming my cat, or is everyone just interested in kittens?

I am a cat lover and I wouldnt want a Maine coon for the following reasons:
Large breed
Long haired so will need regular grooming / high maintenance
Tend to be house cats
Reputation for grumpiness (rightly or wrongly)

Sorry 😐

Emma198 · 24/05/2018 16:41

He's amazing ❤

Jb291 · 24/05/2018 16:42

He's beautiful OP. I live with a multi cat menagerie and have Maine coons already. Can I suggest contacting TICA or one of the other pedigree registration bodies and they may be able to put you in touch with someone who can offer him a living forever home

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:42

No, no, he's not a fierce boy - just a handsome one!

ghostyslovesheets · 24/05/2018 16:43

he's beautiful - my teenagers are now trying to make drive to Scotland - but I agree with the others - try a breed specific rescue

GertrudeCB · 24/05/2018 16:43

The image of my brother's late Main Coon. Absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately my lard arse Lab wouldn't tolerate a cat in the house Sad

PratRocket · 24/05/2018 16:43

Personally prefer the first picture as it makes him look like

Frank King of Cats Lord Of All That Is Good And Furry and shows off his ears to full effect

PratRocket · 24/05/2018 16:45

Well I think some Mners have said they will take him if you can afford to let him go for free. He is beautiful though I want him so bad

IamaBluebird · 24/05/2018 16:46

He is absolutely gorgeous. Hope you find him a good home.

MrsSchadenfreude · 24/05/2018 16:47

He is my boy's twin! (Except Frank's ears are more pointy.)

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 24/05/2018 16:47

Pets4Homes is notorious for being full of dodgy puppy farms, animals which are misrepresented and absolutely no back up when things go wrong. Responsible breeders and knowledgeable pet owners do not advertise there.

Rehome him via another organisation; Cats Protection, Maine Coone rescue... but remember it's kitten season and they'll probably be struggling for space, especially at Cats Protection.

IamaBluebird · 24/05/2018 16:48

In the first photo he looks like Frank king of cats , if you try and take my blanket I will make you sorry .

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:48

I can afford to let him go for free, but I've had conflicted advice.

Some say don't rehome him for free because terrible people will feed him to dogs Sad Sad Sad or think he is defective in some way (he's not!) - some say if you charge people won't be interested in an adult cat.

So . . . Confused

My priority is that he ends up with a family who can love and care for him.

I just did a search on pets4homes (I am just across the border into South Lanarkshire and I can't actually see your advert :(

BackToTheFuschia7 · 24/05/2018 16:49

Well I think some Mners have said they will take him if you can afford to let him go for free.

OP please don’t rehome him to someone who can’t afford to pay for him. If they can’t afford a token amount, how will they pay for vet bills and insurance.

You’re doing the right thing by asking a small fee for him. It puts off a chunk of unsuitable homes. Especially if you don’t plan to check where he’s going etc.

The long hair thing is something I didn't properly think about when i got mine tbf, it's costly keeping his hair maintained and he sheds alot. personality wise though, I never heard they had a reputation for being grumpy, I always heard they were supposed to be extra friendly and mine certainly is, he's also hugely affectionate

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:51

@Raeven I took it down yesterday after getting no replies, and being told the kind of things @AvocadosBeforeMortgages said

Was just coming on to say please don't rehome him through Pets4Homes but see AvocadosBeforeMortgages got there before me.

Some unscrupulous people will take animals for the worst reasons. Much better to try a breed specific rescue or even just a general cat where any new owners are properly vetted.

He's very handsome.

TheNoseyProject · 24/05/2018 16:55

If there is a rehoming Centre near you I would ring them and ask for advice. Just tell them what you’ve written here and that you’re struggling to find him a home. They will help even if you are not sending the cat to them.

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2018 16:56

Ah, X post.

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/05/2018 16:59

God, he's magnificent.

😍

villageshop · 24/05/2018 17:00

My Maine Coon is no problem at all to maintain. Yes he has thick long hair but occasional brushing done regularly keeps him very tidy and no mats. I mean now and again, not every day or even every week, so no particular schedule, just regular now and again every few days.

He has no mats at all and loves being groomed. I trim up long bits occasionally too. He's no trouble at all and never aggressive or mean-spirited. He's a gentle giant and rather shy but loves a cuddle.

ghostyslovesheets · 24/05/2018 17:01

that's not true - I could afford a £400 kitten but all of my 4 rescues are insured and have vet plans covering their basic care

ghostyslovesheets · 24/05/2018 17:01

couldn't even!
