Why doesn't anyone want my cat?

I've posted this in The Litter Tray, but am also cheekily posting here for traffic.

Hello,

I have to, reluctantly, give up my 2-year-old Maine Coon boy. For personal reasons I can no longer provide him a suitable home.

I've put up an advert on Pets4Homes, and NO-ONE is interested. He's a friendly energetic boy, GCCF registered, neutered, up to date with all of his jags, cuddly if you catch him in the right mood, and completely gorgeous.

AIBU to think SOMEONE would be interested in rehoming my cat, or is everyone just interested in kittens?

ICantCope you seem to have given me the contact details for someone looking to rehome their own cat. But my search did bring up the website, so that's helpful, thank you.

I'll DM about the breeder, if that's alright?

There was an agreement to contact her rehoming was necessary, yes.

Ah, OK.

KittenBeast · 24/05/2018 16:17

I think, sadly, that quite a lot of people just want to buy kittens (I did last year, and I actually feel guilty for it, but I love the little bugger to death) we decided to get him a friend, so adopted an adult cat, and he pissed all over all of my carpets, my kitchen counters and shat in the bath every single day for 2 months till we had to send him back. I'm still trying to get rid of the stench. I think perhaps people are worried about this kind of thing.

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:19

He is litter trained! He does not have any kind of toileting problem.

Any prospective owner would be able to see this once they've met him Smile. He really is a lovely boy. It's nothing he's done at all - it's absolutely not his fault.

A reputable breeder wouldn’t ignore you. Are you sure they’ve received your message?

PenApple · 24/05/2018 16:20

I’m in SW Scotland - can’t take him but could try to help find a good home if you’re reasonably close?

ICantCopeAnymore · 24/05/2018 16:20

Shoot, sorry OP, it was the one above it you want!

Be careful then - if you've signed a contract and rehome without permission, you could be liable.

mistermagpie · 24/05/2018 16:20

I have bengals and recently got a new addition. I wanted an adult cat and managed to get my lovely girl through a breeder but while I was looking I signed up to a couple of Bengal rehoming pages on Facebook. I bet there are similar groups for Maine Coon cats so try and have a search. Some aren't location specific and often the people running them will assist with transport.

Veronicat · 24/05/2018 16:21

I'm in South Ayrshire and a vet nurse. Can I help at all?

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:21

I'm not sure how I would know if they've received my message?

Like I said, I've contacted them and not received a reply - not much more I can do re. the breeder Sad.

Gods, I would love another Maine Coon! Mine is currently grooming himself in the garden (outdoor cat by default ) Sadly, we are a multicat household and the doors are open all day, so I don't know if we are suitable.

Luisa27 · 24/05/2018 16:22

Maine Coon Rescue - all the homes will be checked. Otherwise, if you rehome him privately, always ask for a vets reference - and remember to do a home check. People do lie.

Trinity66 · 24/05/2018 16:22

Can we see a picture please Grin

villageshop · 24/05/2018 16:23

Ours is a Maine Coon and lives a happy life as an outdoor / indoor cat with a cat flap and the run of the garden. The fact that he is a pedigree cat is irrelevant imo.

Have you considered finding someone to foster him until your circumstances change? That might be a good compromise, maybe contact Blue Cross for rehoming or fostering advice:

Veronicat · 24/05/2018 16:23

Pressed to soon. I've also fostered and rehomed lots of cats and have lots of cat contacts if you want to pm details?

SweetCheeks1980 · 24/05/2018 16:23

I've got fifteen cats because people give them up.
Rescues are full, foster carers are full. Irresponsible breeders find themselves unable to sell kittens.

People don't spay and neuter unfortunately.

catlover1987 · 24/05/2018 16:23

I think unless you explain why you need to rehome OP, a lot of people will assume that it's something to do with the cat. I would be suspicious if someone was looking to rehome a young pedigree cat without a real reason.

DarlingNikita · 24/05/2018 16:23

What neither of these posts seem to recognise is that these kinds of problems are not either just present or just absent – a previously fine cat can develop them if they're rehomed or another animal (or person) is introduced; or if there are any changes to the environment.

SaucyJack · 24/05/2018 16:23

"Most breeders make you sign a contract saying you will keep a Maine Coon as an indoor cat."

Really? Seems a shame for the cat based on what I know of the breed. Persians and Ragdolls are much better suited to a quiet life on the sofa.

Maybe that's why then? There can't be that many people why would choose a large, active hunting cat when looking for a lap cat to live in a small flat with.

adaline · 24/05/2018 16:24

Whereabouts are you OP? Maybe someone could suggest a good rescue?

Raeven · 24/05/2018 16:24

I would love to have taken him. I am in Scotland. The high amounts asked put me off a lot of adverts. I don't have much money but I have a lot of time and love to offer. I have tried placing adverts online as wanted free to a good home but I was informed that is not allowed.

79andnotout · 24/05/2018 16:25

There are several Maine Coons in my village and they come and go like ordinary cats, including two next door. I didn't realise they were supposed to be kept in? They seem like lovely cats, we feed them when our neighbours are away, although one of mine tries to fight with them a lot so they generally keep out of my garden (my cat has classic angry small cat syndrome!).

PratRocket · 24/05/2018 16:25

I've always wanted a main coon but am sadly too far away. Pretty sure you're going to find someone to take him off you here though!

generally if a cat was being given away online I might think there was a problem with the cat. Especially if the owner wasn't explicit about the reason for rehoming so that may be the issue you have had.

FrankTheCat · 24/05/2018 16:25

It was a discussion and an agreement between us that I would keep him indoors, and I would contact her if I needed to rehome him. I didn't sign anything. He is my first pedigree, and of course I followed her lead.

I'm not on FB and neither is my DH. I can't do anything FB-related.
