Why doesn't anyone want my cat?

I've posted this in The Litter Tray, but am also cheekily posting here for traffic.

Hello,

I have to, reluctantly, give up my 2-year-old Maine Coon boy. For personal reasons I can no longer provide him a suitable home.

I've put up an advert on Pets4Homes, and NO-ONE is interested. He's a friendly energetic boy, GCCF registered, neutered, up to date with all of his jags, cuddly if you catch him in the right mood, and completely gorgeous.

AIBU to think SOMEONE would be interested in rehoming my cat, or is everyone just interested in kittens?

Rehome through a breed specific rescue or general rescue if you most. Don't rehome privately for free, but even privately at a cost is risky and stressful. Let the pro rescues handle it.

BackToTheFuschia7 · 24/05/2018 17:04

So you could afford the token amount ghosty Hmm

That’s my point.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 24/05/2018 17:04

I have just posted this in the litter tray but will put it on this thread too...

Seriously please don't put cats on those websites - people will take them for all sorts of awful reasons including to use as bait for dog fighting.

Take it to a rescue centre - a Maine Coon will be adopted in no time.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/05/2018 17:05

I have a half Maine Coon with the looks and traits of a full one.
He's an indoor cat and no bother at all, other than general catty things.

PratRocket · 24/05/2018 17:06

P please don’t rehome him to someone who can’t afford to pay for him. If they can’t afford a token amount, how will they pay for vet bills and insurance.

Not being able to afford to pay out hundreds for a fancy cat doesn't mean you can't afford a cat.

Some say don't rehome him for free because terrible people will feed him to dogs sad sad sad or think he is defective in some way (he's not!) - some say if you charge people won't be interested in an adult cat.

Yes but that's a token amount not fancy cat prices. Also @expatinscotland has been a poster on Mn for like years and years so you could search her history and get a feel for her. She's never given me the impression she's a dog fighter though!

I know anyone can be a poster on Mn but I'm pretty sure it's not the demographic where you're mostly likely to find people searching for animals to fight.

The OP has already made it clear that she isn’t asking hundreds like a kitten would be. She’s requesting a token amount to weed out people who would take a cat on a whim or with bad intentions.

TweenageAngst · 24/05/2018 17:09

Have sent you a pm

BishopBrennansArse · 24/05/2018 17:10

Omg he's gorgeous
I'm nowhere near you and in a multi cat house with a tom who only happily lives with queens.

One day I will have a Maine Coon though.

mholz · 24/05/2018 17:10

ok

PratRocket · 24/05/2018 17:12

Yes but less than 600 pounds isn't a "token" amount to most people, she hasn't been specific. So we can all only guess what she is offering her for. I'm guessing a couple hundred which personally I wouldn't spend, not because I'm going to use it for dog fighting but just because I don't pay out for cats. They usually find me. And then cost me a fortune in catfood.

Trinity66 · 24/05/2018 17:14

My Maine Coon is no problem at all to maintain. Yes he has thick long hair but occasional brushing done regularly keeps him very tidy and no mats. I mean now and again, not every day or even every week, so no particular schedule, just regular now and again every few days.

He has no mats at all and loves being groomed. I trim up long bits occasionally too. He's no trouble at all and never aggressive or mean-spirited. He's a gentle giant and rather shy but loves a cuddle.

Personality wise he sounds like mine but not so much with the hair! He does let me brush him a bit but twice a year I need to get him groomed, usually when he starts shedding, his loose fur seems to mat really quickly and he needs to be sedated for that so that's what drives the cost up. He's worth it though

Trinity66 · 24/05/2018 17:14

Oh except mine isn't shy at all ^^

BackToTheFuschia7 · 24/05/2018 17:17

Prat

OP said ‘It was not close to kitten prices’ so expect it would be significantly less than £600. I think your guess of £200 is a very fair price for a registered pedigree.

Raeven · 24/05/2018 17:20

@FrankTheCat ah ok. As I said before I would have loved to take him but although I have lots of time (unable to work atm) That also means I have low income and cannot pay on top of the insurance etc. I hope you find a good suitable home for him.

ghostyslovesheets · 24/05/2018 17:20

Depends what the 'token amount' is Hmm Hmm - since the OP hasn't said it could be £200+ for all we no - so no I couldn;t - hth Hmm

MumofBoysx2 · 24/05/2018 17:24

Why on earth would there be a contract to keep a cat indoors?? Cats like to run about and chase mice, can't do that inside! I would love a Maine Coon, they are lovely cats (a friend has two, that are very much outdoorsy cats!). But my dog chases cats, unfortunately :-( Hope you manage to find a loving home for him.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 24/05/2018 17:25

I wasn't talking about MN - I was taking about Pets4Homes etc

SecretNutellaFix · 24/05/2018 17:26

Have you considered speaking to your vet? They may know someone who might want him? Or have an advertising board?

penguinsnpandas · 24/05/2018 17:29

I'm not so sure about AIBU, I think some of those would eat cats Grin but outside of AIBU I would agree its fine to give a cat away on MN to someone who would love them and can insure them like Raeven

ghostyslovesheets · 24/05/2018 17:31

as a rule I don't tend to fight animals but I would take a cat over a badger or a baboon any time

Furano · 24/05/2018 17:31

£200 or £300 for an adult pedigree is very sensible, stops people who don’t give it any thought. Also if that price includes all the ‘cat things’ as they often do for adult cats you essentially aren’t paying anything for the cat really.

mistermagpie · 24/05/2018 17:32

Gosh isn't he spectacular!! My most recent Bengal is a retired queen and cost me £100 to rehome. My kittens were £500 each 8 years ago. Just to give an indication of the price OP might be asking. Most pedigree cats for rehoming (as opposed to kittens) seem to be about £100.

Caaarrrl · 24/05/2018 17:33

OP a couple of posters have shown an interest and said that they are in Scitland, but you don't seem to be replying to them.

Caaarrrl · 24/05/2018 17:33

Or Scotland even!
