To want to say something to parents who DO this?

At school drop off, there are quite a lot of parents who park on the side of the quite busy road (that's allowed) and then go INTO the road open the child's passenger door and stand there with their arses sticking out whilst they undo seatbelts and haul toddlers out.

Why don't they go onto the PATH side of the car and get them out there? Yes they might have to kneel into the car a bit if the child is further towards the road side...but so what? They shouldn't be standing on roads and getting children out onto roads should they?

A grandmother at my children's school suffered life changing injuries doing the same thing.

Because if you have two children in car seats you can't open their seat belts from the other side.

Two or 3 car seats means you can't do that.

Of course you can undo both car seats from one side. I never got my children out the road side.

I've wondered this. It just doesn't seem safe or logical, even with two car seats in the back.

My DF once knocked someone’s car door off with his lorry because they’d left it wide open road side presumably to let someone out. So, so lucky nobody was leaping out of it at the time.

ALWAYS get children out passenger side. YANBU at all, it’s just common sense.

That was still his fault, not theirs. He hit a stationary object, he ws not paying attention.

NO you shouldn't get kids out on a busy road, you need to find a solution where you can get them out from the street. Even with three car seats you should be able to manage it. (Have the school age child on the furthest away car seat and they should be able to get out themselves without you helping them).

Doesn't matter who's fault it was - Mouse is just saying what happened. Being in the right is little consolation from a hospital bed...

The implication was it was their fault. It wasn't. Same to OP...of course people shouldn't do it, but then other people shouldn't hit them with their vehicles even if they do.

It's crazy. I always used to put the little one (who couldn't 'shifty across' on the side where I parked for the school run, so they could all get out safely on the pavement side.

Miggeldy no of course cars shouldn;t hit people....but they do occasionally! Why risk that!? Especially with children involved.

I have 5 kids and 4 of them are perfectly capable of undoing their own clips bar one who I can reach from the other side. Big car, no problems reaching across.

Well I can’t speak for anyone else. But I have a disability that means there is no way I could lean in like that and I have more than one child. —and my rear passenger side door doesn’t open—

I agree its a stupid thing to do. I also see parents who do a stop-and-drop outside the gates stop the car in the middle of the road and, rather than their kids getting out of the door near the kerb, letting them get out in the middle of the road and walk around the car. Why? Some people are clueless.

What can you do, though? You cant go and tell every person that does it off, really. Maybe raise it with the school and they might put a note in the school newsletter?

It's not rocket science to get your children out on the passenger side, onto the pavement.

I agree. Always on the passenger side if possible. My kids are 10 and 13 now and still usually scoot along and out, rather than exit the car onto the road (except the youngest when she's in that sort of mood)

Maybe mention it to the school office. The school could send out a note about it.

Umm... am I being dumb here? If you can't open the passenger side door then why not park the other way so the driver's side door is by the kerb?

School drop off and pick up is a hazard all round.
People parking on pavements taking up all the space so parents with pushchairs and little ones have to walk on the road to get past them.
People speeding through a 20mph zone right outside the school.
People refusing to stop for the lollipop lady.

Whilst in an ideal world everyone would safely take their kids out on the pavement side sometimes it just isn't possible. I have two children, both in extended rear facing seats, and there is no way I could reach across and safely release the child on the roadside from their seat to get them out of the pavement side. In an ideal world people would take extra care driving near a school and not do dickhead stuff like take people's doors off.

The majority of school age children will be able to get themselves out and crawl across to the pavement side , mine know they dont open the door onto the road. If they cant do it alone then they are in even more danger being able to get out into the road. But if theres two adults in the car then one is going to have to get out on two the road and driving near a school you should be taking extra care and going slowly anyway.
