Giving an arbitrary name isn't going to instantly change the chromosomes someone is born with. Sex is not gender identity.

CalmItKermitt · 02/07/2017 20:18

Moronic.

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/07/2017 20:18

Lol you can't choose your own sex! Gender maybe but not yet sure where I sit on that argument

mugc4ke · 02/07/2017 20:22

read up about the difference between sex and gender before posting such nonsense.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/07/2017 20:23

Right then, so a 'woman' could, for example, forgo a smear test - not because she has every right not to want one - but just because she decided that she isn't actually a woman after all. Hmm

This is the sort of thing people get into debates about because they have tooooooo much time on their hands. Much like those who want to debate the rights of those whom identify as pan-unicorn-sexual.

CryingMessFFS · 02/07/2017 20:23

Well nobody can choose their sex, can they? It's biology and we are either male or female. (Yes I know some people are intersex and I'm obviously not referring to them)

Gender is a different matter, that is a construct created by society rather than a biological fact. And it seems people can choose their gender hence why there are transgender people of all ages.

ThePinkOcelot · 02/07/2017 20:24

What next?! Bloody ridiculous.

greendale17 · 02/07/2017 20:25

I am fed up of these ridiculous gender neutral nonsense. You are either male or female

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 02/07/2017 20:25

Ridiculous. You're not assigned a sex, it's observed, that's how babies are made, and any attempt to obscure that is ridiculous - clearly people need better biology lessons.

MrGrumpy01 · 02/07/2017 20:25

They* don't think your sex has a bearing on your health risks and needs? That is very worrying.

I am using they as I am unsure what they prefer.

For fucks sake, really?

Penis = boy
Vagina = girl

Yes, it really is that simple.

RedGrapeCornSnake · 02/07/2017 20:27

I wasn't 'assigned ' female at birth - I am genetically female
My children weren't assigned sexes at birth - they are genetically what they are.
Sex is genetic - written into the very genes that you are made of. What you choose to do with that information is up to you

Idrinkandiknowstuff · 02/07/2017 20:27

Fucking ridiculous.

ArcturianMegaDonkey · 02/07/2017 20:30

If sex is a choice, can straight women now choose to be gay men and so avoid unplanned pregnancies? Even if they have sex with their gentleman vaginas?

Jivebunny89 · 02/07/2017 20:30

As other posters have already noted, sex is binary, gender is a newer concept. I find the recent cultural focus on transgenderism fascinating. While I try not to be judgemental, there are a group of parents who are challenging the idea that gender can be chosen by children. Mostly because more and more kids are being referred to hormonal treatments/surgeries which will leave them infertile. www.transgendertrend.com is their website. It's good to have a narrative a bit different. I'm not a member of that website, just keep reading on it as I like to hear a critical view.

Writerwannabe83 · 02/07/2017 20:32

Chromosomes determine sex.
You are either biologically male or biologically female you can't just choose.

I think the world is going mad sometimes.

MagentaRose72 · 02/07/2017 20:33

People need to stop overcomplicating things! It is what it is.

A hand is a hand, a foot is a foot - we all have those, but genitals dictate the gender.

I think its up to parents to bring up a child with a sense of pride in themselves, with positive body image. We are all far more than our genitals!

msrisotto · 02/07/2017 20:33

This trend is absolutely batshit crazy. No one is assigned sex. You just are. The same way that some of us are assigned blue eyed. Change your clothes, do what you like but why try to redefine biology?? Why?? Pissed off that you did badly at GCSE? Biology is a real thing that you can't identify out of!

ILoveDolly · 02/07/2017 20:36

You can bring a child up in a gender neutral way when its a baby but that won't change the biological sex

Questioningeverything · 02/07/2017 20:36

Fucking hell ive heard it all now 🙄🙄

londonrach · 02/07/2017 20:41

I give up..apart from a rare few who are intersex the baby is male or female. If they wwnt to change later thats their choice. At birth its down to a penis or vagina..end of story!!!

paxillin · 02/07/2017 20:42

Maybe they shouldn't be assigned parents at birth, either. They can be brought up communally and then chose parents at 7 or something.

SnickersWasAHorse · 02/07/2017 20:44

I love the idea of having a gentleman vagina. If I have one of those can I chose to not have periods as well?
