To find it a bit odd that my cleaner thinks this?

She was saying today how over-the-top some of her clients are and they expect too much. She said they expect her to do things every week that a normal person would just do once a year.

"Like pull out the fridge and clean under there?" I say, searching.

"This one lady, she wants me to pull out her couch and vacuum and mop under there. Every time!"

Is it just me or is it expected that the floor would be cleaned under the couch every time the floor is cleaned? That's what I did when I had time to clean my own floors.

I suspect she's sounding you out to see what you want doing see what she can away with only doing once a year

Ecureuil · 26/06/2017 15:58

I Hoover about 4 times a day (2 toddlers and a dog) so I certainly don't Hoover under the sofa every single time!

fishfingerman307 · 26/06/2017 16:05

I'd hate our cleaner to move the sofa - it's a two person job so (a) she might injure herself and (b) it would probably damage the floor too.

In any case, I only pay for enough time for a general maintenance clean. it would be highly unreasonable to expect her to get a deep clean done in the time available. Surely it depends on time/pay/expectations which will be different for every job.

Coddiwomple · 26/06/2017 16:05

People aren't dragging furniture about weekly are they? well, no, that's why they employ a cleaner.

importanceofhappiness · 26/06/2017 16:14

I clean under furniture weekly. It's where all my pets' toys end up and if I didn't, nobody would have anything to play with any more!

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 26/06/2017 16:15

I clean under the settee maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Perhaps it gets a nudge every now and then so I clean 6 inches further under, but it only really gets moved and all the kids toys retrieved occasionally.

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 26/06/2017 16:16

I can't move my sofa, it rarely gets hoovered under.

And I have better things to do, like anything.

Laiste · 26/06/2017 16:20

I only clean under a fridge when it breaks and i replace it. Or when we move house. Which ever is sooner. These days it's the moving house.

Crunchymum · 26/06/2017 16:23

OK so we don't have a cleaner.

Couch gets dragged out once every 6 months or so (usually when one of the kids posts something they really like down the back of it) and once it's out I'll hoover, can't say I ever drag it out to hoover though?

Fridge has never been moved (been here 2.6y) and oven only cleaned once in that time Shock

I'm fucking filthy I am.

yamadori · 26/06/2017 16:25

I clean the floor under the fridge every time we get a new fridge Grin

I have a cleaner, she is lovely and is now a very good friend. She is here for two hours, every week and also cleans for other
neighbours two hours a week. She has actually become a great friend of mine.
In my house, she does what she can in two hours each week.
As with my neighbours, the houses are 4 beds, 2baths, not huge.
We've talked at length about what my neighbours expect.

Any employer needs to think, "how much could I do in two hours?"
In fact, just the basics. The bathrooms, including toilets and baths, mop the floors, whizz round the kitchen, dust, Hoover floors and stairs. Wash the floors. Tweak the sofa cushions. Tidy up the crap.

It's a lot to do in two hours.
My neighbours often say to her, can you clean the windows this week?
I tell her to say "no, that will take another hour and I can't do it this week"
But she doesn't say it because she's too nice.

So, if you have a cleaner, or thinking of it, just think, what could I do in two hours? Often less than you think.

MadisonAvenue · 26/06/2017 16:33

The sofas and chair in one living room are hoovered underneath each time because there's a gap big enough for the hoover wand to fit under, the ones in the other living maybe get pulled out once every two months.

As for the fridge freezer, I can run a wet cloth underneath the front and clean but there's no way that I could pull it out and clean the whole floor underneath properly. Same with the washing machine and dishwasher.

INeedANameChange · 26/06/2017 16:34

I have seven couches downstairs. I'm sure as hell not moving them to clean under them. I wouldn't expect a cleaner to either.

Maybe if they came when we were on holiday when there was less to do, but not usually.

elphabathegreenone · 26/06/2017 16:34

.

HipsterHunter · 26/06/2017 16:36

I woudl only expect 'deep clean' stuff like pulling out sofas to happen when I go away for a couple of week so there isn't 'normal' cleaning to do.

notknownatthisaddress · 26/06/2017 16:37

I definitely wouldn't be cleaning behind the fridge only once a year. That's foul. Once every couple of months. It's not that hard to pull it out. And the fridge and freezer and oven too. Behind AND inside...Why wouldn't you?

Same with the sofa, I dust the skirtings behind it, and hoover behind and under it every other month. Ditto the beds and some of the bedroom furniture. I think a blitz 5-6 times a year is essential. Some peoples houses must stink if they only do certain things once a year! Shock

Bet these people who only clean behind the fridge once a year probably only change their sheets and duvet covers once every 3-4 months and use the same bath towel for a month!
Ewwwwwwwwwwww..!!!

FatGirlWithChocolate · 26/06/2017 16:38

I'm a cleaner, and I have a basic routine that I follow for my ladies (incorporating everything they want done)..if they want anything above that they tell me explicitly..I've been asked to move a tumble dryer (which slides out very easily) to hoover behind it..but they have never asked me to move something as big and heavy as a sofa or fridge.

notknownatthisaddress · 26/06/2017 16:40

Do have to laugh at the 'I have far too busy a life to clean behind the fridge and couch more than once a year,' brigade! Grin

Yeah right! Wink

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 26/06/2017 16:40

They are paying her to clean, if they want under there sofa cleaned everyday then so be it.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 26/06/2017 16:43

I guess for me personally I'd do under the furniture about once a month (ish) the sofa on carpet and very low so you can't see under it. However I have a giant divan bed that's huge and heavy and the instructions say you should have 2 people full lift it off the ground due to moving parts so I just don't Hoover under it as my rooms so small there's not even anywhere to move it. Is anyone else in the same position?
Similarly DS' bed is a bunk bed double but you can get under it so I just sort of shove the Hoover under...

LexieLulu · 26/06/2017 16:44

I clean under my sofa weekly, maybe fortnightly at a push but yearly is disgusting!

valeriej43 · 26/06/2017 16:48

I used to be a cleaner, and usually spent 3 hours a morning ,to clean a whole house, some people had veryn minilamistic houses some were an absolute tip if they had kids
One house i didnt stay at very long were ocd i think, everything had to be done twice, the bathrooms [2] had to have the tiles [whole walls] washed, dried, then polished, the woman used to to sit in the kitchen before she went to work, and have a drink, never offered me one,[boiling hot weather, giving instructions to husband to get the ironing done later,
I went to one lady though who also became a friend, and we spent a lot of the time talking, then she would say, dont do anymore i will finish it later,
I clean my floors every day, [laminate] and vacuum every day, pull fridge, washer cooker out about once a month, as they seem to get bits underneath from cat litter and biscuits etc,
I actually like cleaning, but not ott

LakieLady · 26/06/2017 16:49

It takes 2 big strong men to move my sofas, and as I only have one in residence, under the sofa never gets done. It's less than an inch off the floor, so the most I do is run the hoover nozzle under the edges and down the back.

The nozzle fell off down the back of the sofa once, so even the edges went aeons without being hoovered.

But I'm an unashamed slattern, and DP is even worse. I change my bedlinen weekly though!

SoENFJ · 26/06/2017 16:51

she should keep her mouth shut! if i wanted the job half assed I'd do it myself.

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 26/06/2017 16:54
