To find it a bit odd that my cleaner thinks this?

She was saying today how over-the-top some of her clients are and they expect too much. She said they expect her to do things every week that a normal person would just do once a year.

"Like pull out the fridge and clean under there?" I say, searching.

"This one lady, she wants me to pull out her couch and vacuum and mop under there. Every time!"

Is it just me or is it expected that the floor would be cleaned under the couch every time the floor is cleaned? That's what I did when I had time to clean my own floors.

I clean under the sofas simply because I have a ds who loves to shove as many toys as humanly possible store his toys under there. I clean under them maybe once a week. Takes 5 minutes.m to pull them out and hoover/mop/drag all 109999 toys from under there Angry

Pre dc the sofas were only moved every 6 months or so Blush

julesmumoftwins · 03/12/2017 18:16

I've had various cleaners over the years and only 2 of them have ever cleaned 'properly ' 😡 The rest have as much use as a chocolate teapot, skimming round things when dusting, missing things that should be cleaned and just useless - why do so few people these days know HOW to clean properly???

jkgirl · 03/12/2017 18:18

I actually can’t remember the last time I pulled the fridge out ....Hmm

rcit · 03/12/2017 18:20

I don't have a cleaner but agree the op's cleaner is reasonable to think that you only need to pull out sofa once a year.

Someonessnackbitch · 03/12/2017 18:28

In my eyes that’s what a cleaner is for. To do the ‘once a year jobs’ that I just don’t have time to do e.g. under sofa, skirting boards, all the cracks, behind tv etc. The things that just don’t fit into the daily cleaning routine.

Katherine2626 · 03/12/2017 18:32

Can't be that dirty under the sofa if nobody is walking about on that area of flooring - dusty maybe, but not dirty. Some people have insane expectations of what a cleaner can get through in a few hours - it depends on how long she has and how much is asked of her really.

Beezley · 03/12/2017 18:46

I've got eleven years cleaning experience. I would never discuss one client with another and from experience you should always ask client how they like their cleaning prioritised. Should always Hoover under any furniture you can and always mop under any furniture you can. It's part of a cleaners job.x

FaveNumberIs2 · 03/12/2017 18:54

I can’t actually move my sofa. Ooops.

mathanxiety · 03/12/2017 19:00

Superfluffy I would hoover under the rug. A lot of dust finds its way through rugs onto the floor beneath.

I think the cleaner's clients are being unreasonable if the sofa requires two people to move it and she works alone. Cleaners are not paid enough to risk putting their backs out.

MsHarry · 03/12/2017 19:01

No, I pull the sofa out to hoover a few times a year. Even then, there isn't much there to hoover.

Jojopugh · 03/12/2017 19:07

Me personally I wouldn't pull someone fridge out everyday or at all for that matter. If they wanted it cleaning every week I would expect to go to there house and then to have or be there to pull it out.

Sofa, I wouldn't pull that out every week either. If I could I would sweep or vaccine under it but I wouldn't move it.
Can you imagine is she scratched the floors through doing this.
Or pulled her back bad enough for her to not be able to work for a while. I bet these customers won't be offering to pay her bills.

Jojopugh · 03/12/2017 19:07

Lol vacume

LoveYouTimMinchin · 03/12/2017 19:11

Pmsl. We got a really heavy new sofabed about 18 months ago. Haven't pulled it out to clean under or behind it since. It's a two person job anyway.

mindutopia · 03/12/2017 19:12

I don't clean under our coach every time we hoover. It's maybe once every year or two. But a cleaner is there to do whatever you need them to do in the time you have them for, so if you want them to spend time doing that instead of something else, fine. You're the one paying them. My cleaner cleans under the sofa occasionally (more than we ever would ourselves), but I think it's because she runs out of things to do. But personally I think there are more crucial jobs to be done than cleaning under the sofa, so that wouldn't be a high priority for me.

paxillin · 03/12/2017 19:13

I was just going to jump into the bunfight again, then realised I've already taken part back in June Grin

flumpybear · 03/12/2017 19:15

We ask our cleaning company from time to time to do a deep clean which is under furniture, windows, ceilings etc - otherwise it’s the major areas but wouldn’t expect them to Move furniture in every room each week

squiz81 · 03/12/2017 19:48

I move the sofa to vaccuum under it every day! But we have wooden floors so stuff tends to roll under there. I'm guaranteed to find at least 10 bits of lego under each sofa.

SomeKindOfGenius · 03/12/2017 19:50

I did a “big clean” today. Called DP in to help me move the sofa. I spotted a dog collar hanging from underneath it and asked him to pull it out. An indication of how often he thinks I clean properly came when he replied “fuck, is it likely to have a dog attached” 😂😎

svalentine60 · 03/12/2017 20:18

Crikey first world problems.

Wassock · 03/12/2017 20:48

I’m supposed to hoover under the sofa? 😳

Carriecakes80 · 03/12/2017 21:26

Nah, bit of dirt is good for your health! Better than all that cleaning crap you're breathing in every day! My cleaner is me, and me does a good job when me is feeling like me wants to!
Or I get my lovely kiddies to do it! ;-)

manicmij · 04/12/2017 00:12

Not moving a sofa especially if sited on wooden floor is to me just lazy. If on carpet and sofa is heavy to move that's different altogether. Wouldn't move out the fridge every week - once a month as attachment on Hoover can usually such up anything trapped round the edges. Don't think the cleaner is being unreasonable.

melj1213 · 04/12/2017 01:02

My fridge is built in and my freezer is taller than I am (and heavy so dragging it would damage the kitchen's slate tile floor) so neither of them have been cleaned behind since I moved into my house a couple of years ago ...

My sofa isn't super heavy but it isn't light either so it needs a good bit of shoving to move, and the base is very low to the ground, so you can't even get the hoover nozzle more than a couple of millimeters under there. I tend to rearrange the living room furniture twice a year when I do my 6-monthly deep clean/declutter so they get hoovered under then, but it's rare that I will find anything other than a bit of fluff/cat hair, the occasional coin and maybe a piece of paper/junk mail that has been dropped and ended up pushed under the sofa. It's definitely not worth the effort of pulling it out every week.

On the other hand, I used to live in Spain and had a cleaner there who used to pull all the beds/sofas out to clean behind every week. The difference there though was that our flat was all marble floors and lightweight furniture with long legs (so clear space underneath to get to with a broom/mop) which meant it was more likely to accumulate not only dust/dirt but also "stuff" that needed to be properly put away, not just kicked out of sight under the nearest piece of furniture

Pensionista · 04/12/2017 09:57

My cleaner sometimes does things I havn't asked her to do, she's a gem. If say, I want the windows cleaned or my kitchen cupboards emptied and cleaned I ask her and she does them, but I don't expect her to do all her other cleaning jobs as well. If she finishes before her two hours are up she will find something else to do ie hoover etc. Under Sofa, fridge etc she does a couple of times a year. I don't care, lifes to short. But about 3 or 4 times a year she will beat the floor rugs ( even though they have been previously hoovered) I make sure I look after her because she's worth her weight in gold (rare) so I give her things like my grandsons old toys (she has two boys) or things I dont want or need anymore, handbags tops etc. I have had other cleaners in the past and there were some that were more than useless, so now I have a good one I want to keep her. She's been with me 3 years now.

KnowsStuff · 04/12/2017 17:35

She’s not cleaning for free right? So if the client wants it cleaning under every week- that’s what she’s paid for. Not to give opinions
