To find it a bit odd that my cleaner thinks this?

She was saying today how over-the-top some of her clients are and they expect too much. She said they expect her to do things every week that a normal person would just do once a year.

"Like pull out the fridge and clean under there?" I say, searching.

"This one lady, she wants me to pull out her couch and vacuum and mop under there. Every time!"

Is it just me or is it expected that the floor would be cleaned under the couch every time the floor is cleaned? That's what I did when I had time to clean my own floors.

Not professional to moan about other clients. But, to clean under sofas and other tedious jobs will depend how heavy sofas are how many hours somebody contracts the cleaner for.
There are ridiculous people who think cleaner can clean iron clean kitchen&dishes, fridge, oven, etc. in like 2 hours?!! Ridiculous.
But at no time cleaner should be venting its mouth. I would tell I dont want to know

chickenanbeanz · 04/12/2017 18:02

My mum always moans about my standards of housekeeping but it was in HER house not mine where my daughter's security blanket was lost for 6 months it turned up under an armchair, my mum also has a cleaner (who incidentally, on another topic, she is scared to stand up to over disgusting habits like the cleaner wiping the toilet with the cloth from the kitchen sink utterly repulsive but she is a scary woman my mums to much of a wimp to say anything) - I rest my case

Tara12 · 04/12/2017 18:26

Depends how many hours she is paid for really doesn't it? If they pay for two hours and it's aw hole house, well it would be too much to expect. I wondered why you are asking?

bossyrossy · 04/12/2017 18:35

There’s more to life than cleaning under the sofa.

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 04/12/2017 18:46

I’d hoover under mine if it wasn’t filled with boxes...

So yes, I would expect a cleaner to clean under there (were it possible).

Madsy1990 · 04/12/2017 18:56

Stealth-boasting bullshit. You can afford a cleaner? congrats! Yes, dragging out a sofa and vacuuming and mopping it every time you vacuum and mop is quite frankly absurd. Then again, I vacuum and mop every day, multiple times, (with a 3 and 4 year old I haven't much choice) and stick the hose under the sofa. Pulling out my 8 seater which comes apart in 3 bits and is impossible to clip back together without the aid of a crane is something I will do a few times a year. Life is too short, or so they say.

AIBU to think my co-worker is very racist/prejudice and tell her?
I work in a office of around 15 people and around 11 of us are not 'white British'. One of our colleague keeps making comments that she is the one of the fewer of 'white British' in the office. She also makes comments that where she lives they are mostly 'white middle class british families' and she has no problems with immigration when she travels with her husband and children as all her family are 'white British'. Every time she makes these comments all my friends roll their eyes and ignore her, and the atmosphere gets a bit awkward. Last week one of our ex-colleague (non white British) came to visit us for lunch and she again made the same comment about her family being 'white British middle class'. I could not help myself but tell her that she sounded very prejudice/racist and ask her what was her point? Of course she didn't like and just ignored me.

Sorry, just posted something on thewrong page... Blush

You have a cleaner?

extinctspecies · 04/12/2017 19:34

Having a cleaner isn't a stealth boast.

Perfectly normal for women who work outside the home.

Twofishfingers · 04/12/2017 19:44

I think it's incredibly patronising and unfair to expect a cleaner to know exactly how you will want your house to be cleaned, which parts you want done each week, what is to be done every two weeks, or every month. Do you know what - I talk to my cleaner. every week I let her know that IF she has time (I pay her for three hours, it's a large four bed house) she can clean the windows one week, hoover the sofa and under the sofa the other week, deep-clean the kitchen another week. Another week she will hoover the ceiling - we have high ceiling and get cobwebs up there! next week it will be dusting all the frames.

It depends how many hours the cleaner does but I think it's unfair to expect her to do all of the above within a limited timeframe. There's only so much they can do in two or three hours.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 04/12/2017 20:16

I hope my cleaner....
Oh wait - I'm the cleaner!

Once a month...sometimes more often...sometimes less.

"Having a cleaner isn't a stealth boast.

Perfectly normal for women who work outside the home."

And also perfectly normal for women and men who don't work, or who work in the home, or who work part time who don't like cleaning, who might want to prioritise something else, or who have physical limits which mean they can't clean.

Employing a cleaner is not just in the realm of wealthy wohms.

mumof3boys33 · 05/12/2017 09:24

It’s funny how things have changed for me, pre kids I worked full time and had a cleaner. Now I have kids and I’m a cleaner, I only have 2 cleaning jobs just to earn myself a little money. I earn well cleaning and it’s flexible. So it works for the time being. Anyway, the 2 people I clean for are good friends so I would never discuss one against the other! But they both expect a different standard of cleaning. One wants me to do a smaller area more thoroughly whereas the other wants me to cover a bigger area but she’s not so fussed about all the nooks and crannies. I don’t move the large sofas every week, but every few weeks or so. They are heavy and I struggle to pull them out. I do move smaller items like chairs etc. I don’t vacuum under my own sofa very often though! I’m being paid to clean so I do jobs I rarely do in my own house. Jobs like the tops of doors never get done in my house, but paying a cleaner you expect jobs that aren’t done by yourself to be done by a cleaner. So yes a job “most people” do yearly you expect a cleaner to do more often.

extinctspecies · 05/12/2017 18:53

Quite so TimMInchin

safariboot · 05/12/2017 19:04

"they expect her to do things every week that a normal person would just do once a year."

Anyone who pays for a cleaner to clean their home is already far from 'a normal person'. Including you OP. Normal people have to suck it up and do the cleaning themselves.

Grandma2002 · 07/12/2017 12:22

I have a list of jobs which I keep on a spreadsheet so that I know what has to be done each week. I give my cleaner a list each week which always includes, bathroom, kitchen and one other room. She only has to wash the kitchen and bathroom floor once a month but I expect a thorough clean of whichever room is designated that week. We completely clear the kitchen, bathroom, and room of all items so she just cleans. We have no children at home now so this system works perfectly. She has cleaned for us for the past 14 years so it must work.

NeilPetark · 07/12/2017 12:26

This is going to be one of these threads that never dies.

FWIW, I saw a spider go behind my sofa a while back, I’m not moving the sofa.

Justgivemesomepeace · 07/12/2017 12:32

I clean under mine fairly regularly and just whip the Hoover round most days and I consider myself to be a pretty crap housekeeper. I do however have a 4yr old and there is always tons of Lego, knex, wrappers and crap under there with the odd sock of dd's and this week my little sweeping brush that went missing. So yes I do under mine fairly often, mainly to retrieve things.

mumof3boys33 · 07/12/2017 12:57

Gosh...I've just seen she doesn't do under rugs. I said above I don't always move the heavy sofa, but rugs? I always move the rug, vacuum the rug or take it outside and bash against the wall, then do underneath before putting it back. Surely that is just basic cleaning and should always be done. I also remove chair cushions, vacuum underneath etc. as well. If I had a cleaner and those jobs weren't being done then I would change cleaners!

And you had to reply to a 7 year old thread to tell us all this?
