To find it a bit odd that my cleaner thinks this?

She was saying today how over-the-top some of her clients are and they expect too much. She said they expect her to do things every week that a normal person would just do once a year.

"Like pull out the fridge and clean under there?" I say, searching.

"This one lady, she wants me to pull out her couch and vacuum and mop under there. Every time!"

Is it just me or is it expected that the floor would be cleaned under the couch every time the floor is cleaned? That's what I did when I had time to clean my own floors.

Bet these people who only clean behind the fridge once a year probably only change their sheets and duvet covers once every 3-4 months and use the same bath towel for a month!
Ewwwwwwwwwwww..!!!

Fridge Once a year if that for me, I boil wash my (many) towels weekly or more and rotate bedding weekly too.Hmm

TheAntiBoop · 26/06/2017 17:01

How do you clean behind a built in fridge?

youhavetobekidding · 26/06/2017 17:04

I think she was unprofessional to criticise one client to another.

As to whether cleaning under the sofa every visit is a reasonable request, it depends on the sofa, the size of the house, how long the cleaner is there

SomeOtherFuckers · 26/06/2017 17:18

Lol maybe once a month but I don't think I've done it in about 6 lol!

chipmonkey · 26/06/2017 17:18

I saw a monumental row between a cleaner and client recently on our local Facebook group.

Cleaner came on and complained that she needed to find a new client as her last client was very, very fussy!

Client came on in a different post and said she was looking for a new cleaner and said "I am very, very fussy! with lots of Grin emoticons.
They then proceeded to argue on Facebook. Amusing for the rest of us but I thought very unprofessional of the cleaner.

rightwhine · 26/06/2017 17:23

People clean under their fridges?

I think the only time I ever did that was if it was replaced. In my defence, I've had built in ones since I've had children but still...

rightwhine · 26/06/2017 17:25

Washing machines and cookers too?

I thought my house was clean but obviously not.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 27/06/2017 02:16

Ok I didn't consider how heavy some sofas are, or how some are even flush against the floor so wouldn't require constant cleaning (like mine does). And some are very heavy which I think it would be U to expect her to move by herself.

The other thing is she doesn't do under the rug or couch cushions unless asked. I've never had a cleaner who does though, which I find really odd.

One cleaning company I used actually charged extra to vacuum the skirting boards. Surely that's just part of vacuuming the floor?

It takes me 3 hours to do my house top to bottom. 3 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, kitchen, living area, vacuumed and mopped, wiped down, sheets changes etc. That's to a pretty high standard. None of my cleaners have done it to the same standard. Maybe it should be, "AIBU to expect a professional to do as good or better a job than I do?"

With baby twins and a 3yo it's going to be a long time until I get an uninterrupted block of 3 hours for cleaning, so until then it's a very basic clean that keeps us functioning for now.

About her being unprofessional, I suppose it is but she's only very young and she is a sweet girl. I think she's just a bit of an oversharer. I don't mind. I like a bit of light gossip. Grin

I'm pretty clean...I hoover every other day and always do under the sofas and rugs. But we do have a large hairy dog...and hard floors.

Sundayspilot · 27/06/2017 04:09

I have a genuine question for those who move their fridges for cleaning. How on earth are you pulling out an appliance that's 6 feet tall, three feet wide and three feet deep? Do you enlist your DH? Or am I just a weakling? Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 27/06/2017 04:42

Sundays, mine's on castors. It's kind of cumbersome, but not heavy. And yes, I'm strong. Grin

ObsessedWithTablet · 27/06/2017 06:06

I do under the rug every week. Under the sofas once every three or four months, they're heavy and last time I put my back out and was in pain for weeks. No way would I expect my hypothetical cleaner to lift them.

I've never done under the fridge here, it's all built in. My cooker is over a cupboard so I would see if it was dirty underneath and it isn't. In my last house, there was no way of shifting the fridge/freezer. When they came to repair it the man had to call for someone to come and help him move it.

It's a bit crazy to be shifting heavy furniture around and taking apart fixings every week!

KoalaDownUnder · 27/06/2017 06:07

I guess it depends how easy your furniture is to move.

My sofas are both on legs, on hard floors. It's the work of a minute for one person to drag them out from the wall.

junebirthdaygirl · 27/06/2017 06:28

I always couches to clean under and if dh or dc didnt do it l would feel they took a short cut and chase them back. And l am in no way a great housekeeper. That said l do a good job when l get going. And couch cushions must be moved as stuff collects there. I would judge a cleaner on those .
Fridge built in.

roundaboutthetown · 27/06/2017 07:06

A bit of a weird obsession with mopping going on, there. What's to mop under a sofa every week? Surely it's mainly dust that gets under there? Or does this customer spill drinks under the sofa on a regular basis and have mice peeing and pooing under there?

AceholeRimmer · 27/06/2017 07:12

Gosh I only vac under the rug when I get a new one! Grin I think it's just about cleaning standards OP, you think yours are normal but they are quite high so you need to spell out what you need.

MoonlightMedicine · 27/06/2017 07:16

Depends on the sofa and the floor. My sofa is raised on legs in a wood floor. It needs hoovering/sweeping under every couple of days or it gets really dusty and collects toys/rubbish from the kids.

RoseVase2010 · 27/06/2017 07:21

Our sofa hasn't been moved since it went in 18 months ago! I wouldn't expect a cheaper to move it as it's a two man job as it's a large L shaped sofa wedged in position. (It's on the list of jobs to pin a reluctant husband down for!!)

If it was a smaller sofa that could be easily moved out of the way or that it was easily visible under then yes.

BasketOfDeplorables · 27/06/2017 07:54

I move ours every week, but it's the only way to find the multitude of things the toddler has managed to lose under there. It's not right to the floor, but too low to see under so it needs to be moved to find what's under there.

The kitchen is all built in with sealed plinths so I never have to move anything. It's a 2 bed flat so not too much to keep clean, but I only hoover once a week when DP takes the toddler out as she is completely terrified of it at the moment.

StrangeLookingParasite · 27/06/2017 07:57

I definitely wouldn't be cleaning behind the fridge only once a year. That's foul. Once every couple of months. It's not that hard to pull it out. And the fridge and freezer and oven too. Behind AND inside...Why wouldn't you?

Hahahaha. Because there is nowhere for it to go. It is nearly impossible to 'pull it out'. You lack imagination.
These neurotic people...

grannytomine · 27/06/2017 08:06

I know someone who got her cleaner to hoover the loft, not attic, a proper loft that you had to open a hatch and pull down a ladder. I couldn't understand that. I've never cleaned a loft in my life, haven't even been in one very often.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 27/06/2017 08:20

these threads are always such good value Grin

I've just checked our manual for the fridge, it says it only needs pulling out and cleaning once a year. It also says to unplug it and defrost it before you pull it out, and once you have put it back in place again you need to leave it to settle for at least six hours before plugging in again. That is a hell of a faff to do every couple of months, especially if the manufacturers themselves don't recommend it.

Both my fridge and oven are really heavy, I could not move them by myself. There is also not that much slack in the gas pipe behind, I would worry I would pull it off if I tried to move it out too far. So that is why I wouldn't.

Lucisky · 27/06/2017 08:48

I worked for myself as a cleaner for a long time. Most clients lovely, but some are unreasonable. You can clean a house top to bottom in a specified time, or you can whizz through some rooms to allow time to do 'special cleaning' (like perhaps washing down all the bathroom tiles, or moving all the furniture in a room for a good deep clean). Some expected both. If you are there for three hours say, and one room takes an hour because of deep cleaning,(which isn't really long enough anyway)it doesn't leave you long to do the rest. Some people didn't seem to realise this, they want it all. As for sofas. If they were easily moveable, I would move them. If they were to heavy I would not, and say so, and they would have to move them for me. Having injured myself struggling with heavy items, I was not keen to do it again.

Verbena37 · 27/06/2017 11:27

We are pretty clean as a family and we don't have a cleaner.
I can honestly say I've never pulled out the fridge in between house moves (we've moved 9 times in 12 years) and tbh, when we have moved, the dust under the fridge is minimal and can be sucked up or wiped in seconds.

Sofa-wise, ours is really heavy so I pull out the chair regularly, every couple of weeks to hoover underneath but I defo don't pull out the sofa. Maybe twice or three times a year. I figure, if you're dusting and hoovering the room every day/every other day, there will only be minimal dust underneath.
