My neighbour popped round at about 12:45 today to ask us to turn the music off. I told him no.
Background - my 20 year old DS popped to the shop for me before going to meet friends. When he got back he pulled up outside, left the engine running and music on. When he opened the door I could hear his music. As he was in a rush, I helped him sort out a packed lunch. We has just finished when there was a knock on the front door. I opened it (and could once again hear the music) and it was my neighbour. He asked me to turn the music off or down. I said no, that it was the middle of the day and you couldn't hear the music inside or only faintly if the windows were open. He got quite huffy, said that it was too loud and he was only asking politely.
While this was going on DS had gone out the back door and was going back to his car, total time at home, less than 10 minutes.
I said to him that his wife had previously complained (in the middle of the afternoon) and that I said the same thing to her. It was the middle of the day and they were BU.
I know my response has been influenced by the fact that the guy does all his loud gardening jobs on a Sunday afternoon, which drives me up the wall, but I don't say anything. Oh and he always parks in my parking spot.
Was I BU to tell him to stuff his request?

Your son left his engine running and car music playing for ten minutes while he made a packed lunch!!!

Of course he should have bloody turned it off!

It was rude.
It was antisocial.
It was polluting the environment.

Why on earth did he leave it running?

No you were not being unreasonable at all and don't even give it a second thought.
I live in London and we have 2 music festivals coming up in a park 5 mins from my house and garden and believe me the music is very loud till at least 11 pm ( weekend ).
These are licensed and regulated by the council as there are strict guidelines about noise and antisocial behaviour.

It is rather an antisocial thing to play loud music in your car when you are parked, to be honest, especially outside your house as it shows disrespect to your neighbours, sorry...and if your son wasn't even in the car?? Just why??

You and your son were being dicks. Why did he need to leave his engine running and music blasting out whilst he was inside and making a pack up?
No wonder neighbour was pissed off.
A "ooh, sorry, wasn't thinking" and turning it off is what I'd have done.

Why would your son leave the music playing if it was so quiet it couldn't be heard? And why would he leave the engine running for 10 minutes? Did he want it to be nicked? Does he have money to burn? Or is he too weak and feeble to turn the ignition on again? It all seems very odd to me.

Yabu. Not because of the music but for getting into spats with Nieghbours over nothing. I'd have just said yes and asked your DS to turn the music
down. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If he kept being a dick about things then maybe I'd get stroppy.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other. It depends on how often you are playing loud music too - a one-off, no problem. Every day, I'd start to get pissed off. On the other hand, my upstairs neighbour complained because someone in our building had a baby who kept crying, so some people will moan about every little thing.

Tell your son to switch his engine off when he comes into the house. If I was your neighbour, I'd have been tempted to just switch the engine off myself.

avamiah it is against the law to use a motor vehicle in a manner to cause excessive noise. So yes, it could be illegal (depending on how noisy it actually was).

It's certainly against the highway code seoulsurvivor, even if you're sitting in the car but parked up. There may be a time limit on idling engines not in traffic under the vehicle emissions act too.

Switching off your engine takes two seconds as does restarting - it's not like he saved any time.

And Avamiah what a strange thing to say. It's an arsey thing to regardless of the car.

Apparently it is in contravention of the Regulation 98 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 to leave a vehicle engine idling unnecessarily whilst stationary.
