My method: grill on. Bread under. Slice cheese while one side browns. When side is brown, remove and flip over. Add cheese to non-brown side. Back under grill until cheese is bubbling. Eat.

DH's method: bread in toaster. Remove when browned. BUTTER one side Shock add cheese to buttered side. Grill cheese side. Eat.

I think the toaster part and buttering is completely unnecessary. AIBU?

I make Welsh Rarebit by grating cheddar cheese and breaking in a raw egg - and then adding a little Worcestershire Sauce/Lea & Perrins, plus salt and pepper.

Stir this together and spread it on the un-toasted side of the bread

  • butter is optional - I would for me, but not for my wife !

Put this under the grill until it starts to brown

Tasty !

After twenty years together my DH and I have agreed this is no longer a topic we discuss! He prefers your DH method but will make it for me using my method (yours). Anything else is lose/lose!

Interestingly, me and DP agree on the method of making it but I've banned him from doing cheese on toast because he uses... Gasp Lancashire Cheese! Now, we're notherners through and through but it's quite clear that the only correct cheese for this is cheddar. I'm right, aren't I?

The best method I ever heard was whilst in a pub last year. A youngish chap (early 20's) was at the bar discussing what he should have for tea and cheese on toast was a suggestion. He said that last time he'd made that he had got into trouble with his mum for making such a mess of the toaster. When asked what sort of mess it transpired that he'd turned the toaster on its side, put the bread in with the cheese on and pressed the down thingy..... He was a bit puzzled as to why we all laughed and amazed that it was actually safer to grill it once the cheese was on.

soak the sliced cheese in milk

lightly toast bread both sides

top with the soaked cheese

toast until golden and bubbly

then enjoy

You are correct. I add a smear if marmite or a shake of lea and perrins or sometimes once cooked, a scrape of branston.

I lightly brown the second side so doesn't go soggy, but not too much that any gaps burn. No butter, think the cheese would have enough fats to make it taste good without the butter! I do like it on its own or with marmite.

Ok, I tried new method today.

Bread with grated cheese (and mustard and mayo) on top and under the grill. Cheese melted and bubbly, bread starting to burn a bit round the edges on top. Took it out and still floppy. Was bread underneath still. So next time will try browning bottom side first.

I grill one side then put butter or mayo plus chutney on the "raw" side, topped by the cheese & then grilled.

There is no other way IMHO.

My niece is obsessed with "cheese melting" aka cheese on toast and I make it for her frequently. I toast then grill. One side always toasts quicker and then I add cheese to lighter side. Ready super quick!

I cannot eat bread these days - it gives me a massive IBS gut ache for days and days. So I'm going to have to step away from this thread now as it makes me feel very sad Sad

DH almost does it right, you only need to butter the edges to avoid them catching when you melt the cheese. And defo Worcestershire sauce!

My toaster has a toast one side function for bagels so I use that to roast one side and then whack it under the grill with cheese on

I stick my toast in the toaster, slice the cheese on the plate, microwave cheese until nice and melty then spread on toast Grin
