Cheese on toast AIBU

My method: grill on. Bread under. Slice cheese while one side browns. When side is brown, remove and flip over. Add cheese to non-brown side. Back under grill until cheese is bubbling. Eat.

DH's method: bread in toaster. Remove when browned. BUTTER one side Shock add cheese to buttered side. Grill cheese side. Eat.

I think the toaster part and buttering is completely unnecessary. AIBU?

I just had supper and it's all the OP's fault.

Bread under grill, one side toasted. Turned, thin layer of chutney on the non toasted side (usually caramelised red onion, but I used rosemary jelly tonight) topped with cheese and then grilled to bubbly perfection.

The bread must be toasted on both sides to ensure correct crunch. Cheese on top then under the grill and watch like a hawk so it doesn't go too brown on top.

Good thing I'm full up.....

mylittlephoney · 19/02/2017 22:25

Your way when it's plain. But your DH when I add marmite. It holds the condiment better.

BabychamSocialist · 19/02/2017 22:31

Your DH is correct and quite frankly I'd be recommending a divorce. Who eats cheese on toast without butter?! I bet you put ketchup on a sausage butty too, don't you? HEATHEN. Grin

BroomstickOfLove · 19/02/2017 22:31

The OP's method is correct.

Botanicbaby · 19/02/2017 23:20

YANBU OP!!

Horrified to hear about the way your DH does it! No need to butter the bread or toast on both sides. If you grill it properly so that it melts 'just right', nor does it matter whether the cheese is sliced or grated.

Those of you adding worcestershire sauce etc...yep fair enough but this is a thread about cheese & toast, not Welsh rarebit or any other variation.

My American cousins made me a grilled cheese sandwich. I was expecting 'cheese on toast'. I got a cheese sandwich, fried on both sides...in a frying pan full of butter Shock Grin

Woody67 · 19/02/2017 23:31

I'm with you, except I flash grill the side that the cheese goes on just to firm it up a bit.

Crumblevision · 19/02/2017 23:33

YANBU. Your husband is a loon 😂

Redglitter · 19/02/2017 23:33

Cheese on toast was my dad's thing. He made it for me every time I visited. I haven't been able to face it since he died. Funny how the most simple thread can trigger special memories

Leatherboundanddown · 19/02/2017 23:39

Your way plus marmite

pickledparsnip · 19/02/2017 23:43

Toast one side of bread. Then add grated cheese that has been mixed with a splash of milk to the other side, and grill. It's the shit.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 19/02/2017 23:45

Bread in toaster, put on cheese, microwave til melted.

Curious541 · 19/02/2017 23:49

Errr two slices of bread in one section of toaster so one side of two slices are toasted then under grill

Who are you crazy people managing to resist and only having one slice of cheese on toast??

notangelinajolie · 19/02/2017 23:58

I'm with you on this one. And your DH is so wrong - butter and melted cheese? Isn't that greasy? Caught my DH attempting to make a cheese toastie in my lovely toaster once which is fine as long as you use toastie bags - cheese was everywhere. I was not best pleased.

AYankinSpanx · 20/02/2017 00:33

Then butter round the bits where the cheese dkesnt go to the edge of the bread

I avoid this very dilemma by ensuring that the cheese overlaps the bread like a decent duvet. A duvet of toasted cheese.

DustyMaiden · 20/02/2017 00:52

It must have milk stops toast burning.

Apfelbunny · 20/02/2017 05:54

I read this thread at 2am - I really really want cheese on toast now.
Op's way with lea and perrins and on thick farmhouse white bread.

Except I have no bread so it'll be grilled cheese on digestives or rich teas.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 20/02/2017 06:03

Got hungry, made cheese on toast OP's way, and nope, not right at all. It's too dry.
It's like pizza without any sauce on it. I do like to use barm cake,s baguettes and even slices of bread, bit of pasta sauce then cheese, in oven for 10 mins, and thats what grilled way reminds me of but not as good.
I'll stick to toasting then putting on cheese and microwaving.

monsterbookofty · 20/02/2017 09:03

I make it the same as OP. No need for butter, it makes it too greasy.
I do add ham though and reggae reggae sauce! Grin

Megatherium · 20/02/2017 12:01

I avoid this very dilemma by ensuring that the cheese overlaps the bread like a decent duvet. A duvet of toasted cheese.

But then it drips into the grill pan, which is Most Annoying.

mumeeee · 20/02/2017 12:04

Your DH does it the right way

IamNotDarling · 20/02/2017 12:09

honeylulu cayenne pepper everytime.
Yum.

Toast both sides. No butter.

xStefx · 20/02/2017 12:11

Your way is the way I do it OP,
I want cheese on toast now- cheers OP lol

Noodoodle · 20/02/2017 12:16

Bread in toaster
Butter bloth slices
Lay out sliced/grated cheese on both slices.
Lea & perrins dribbled on then in the microwave to melt it.
Slap it together. Done. Yummy!

Can't be bothered wasting time waiting for the grill to heat up when it can be done so much quicker.

robinia · 20/02/2017 12:20

Definitely toast both sides.
Butter makes it nicer.
But I tend to toast in the toaster and then put in microwave to melt the cheese, which can be sliced or grated, it all melts the same :)
