Cheese on toast AIBU

My method: grill on. Bread under. Slice cheese while one side browns. When side is brown, remove and flip over. Add cheese to non-brown side. Back under grill until cheese is bubbling. Eat.

DH's method: bread in toaster. Remove when browned. BUTTER one side Shock add cheese to buttered side. Grill cheese side. Eat.

I think the toaster part and buttering is completely unnecessary. AIBU?

Thanks to this thread I had cheese toast for my dinner, made the proper way (the OPs way). I did go rogue and douse it in Sriracha hot sauce though.

kep1979 · 20/02/2017 19:55

Your way is totally the right way (although I sometimes add l&p and/or sliced toms).

Cheese on toast is the one thing getting me through horrendous morning all bloody day sickness. Dh offers to make me some. His method was to put completely untoasted bread under grill with sliced toms and a teeny tiny sprinkle of cheese on top! He then proudly presented me with the resulting insult to cheese on toast and wondered why I was miffed and cried It was limp and soggy and had about a tenth of the cheese that I needed!

Shesaid · 20/02/2017 19:56

I'm addicted. No butter. But can someone please tell me this is zero fat and zero calories so I can rest easy?

Serin · 20/02/2017 20:02

I'm with SurreyBlah Smile

bbismad · 20/02/2017 20:22

DH makes it the way I always have...

But seriously, if this is an issue in your marriage you have big problems!

Deejoda · 20/02/2017 20:25

I am with your DH minus the butter. I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrowWink

Flozle · 20/02/2017 20:32

I'm with you, OP. Anything else is sick and wrong.

Slightly off piste: anyone want to comment on cheesy crumpets? DP mocked me for months about this, then tried it, now appears to want to claim the invention...

Joanna0685 · 20/02/2017 20:49

You need to butter or will burn the edges, I toast both sides but the side the cheese is going on less as being retoasted. If you don't toast it goes soggy.

Shallishanti · 20/02/2017 21:14

Have not read all the thread, but OP you are using the correct method, however as a public service may I advise you all that marmalade may be added under the cheese

I quite like burnt toast. Honestly, stick me in front of the telly with a piece of black toast, a mug of milky tea and a blanket and I'm sorted for the night.

BARB060609 · 20/02/2017 21:35

I agree with you OP!

Vladi10 · 20/02/2017 21:37

I too agree with you OP, surely if you toast it first it will be too well done once grilled as well? Definitely don't need butter unless it's in a sandwich toaster!

ItsThatBeverleyMacca · 20/02/2017 22:18

I am delighted to read that many people have had cheese on toast as a result of this thread! I'd really like a cheese on toast emoji.

I toast the bread and then put cheese on and pop it into the microwave!

kateandme · 20/02/2017 23:53

no no one side toasted under grill.the side with cheese needs to still be soft so it a pillowly delight not toastie hard thing.you should always have the soft centre from only grilling one side!

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/02/2017 00:07

Toast bread in toaster
grate cheese into bowl
microwave cheese for 30 seconds
pour onto toast
eat.

You can have it made and eaten in less time than it takes to grill the bread!

ginghambox · 21/02/2017 00:14

Your OH is corrrect, no lea and perrins, tomatoes and some twat mentioned garlic . It's not rocket toast + cheese = job done.

Tartyflette · 21/02/2017 00:23

MrsStinky and Redglitter -- you're not making cheese on toast, you're just melting cheese on bread. It may be perfectly fine, but it's not cheese on toast. The clue is in the word 'toast'.

MagicChicken · 21/02/2017 00:53

I do it your DHs way. The trick is to catch the toast early before it's too brown otherwise it burns under the grill around the edges.

AngkorWhy · 21/02/2017 03:42

I almost posted about my DH's approach to cheese on toast the other day Grin. He does it the same as you, but always has an additional slice of toast on the side. It's very strange, but is just how cheese on toast is done, as far as DH is concerned.

nooka · 21/02/2017 04:09

I'm with the OP, I wouldn't like it her DPs way, sounds both too crunchy and too greasy. However I really just need to call out the microwavers as being wrong wrong wrong!

FatCatFaces · 21/02/2017 04:52

You're both wrong. Bread under grill, toast one side, flip and toast the other side until lightly golden, chuck on cheese (sliced not grated) and continue toasting until cheese is bubbling and edges are almost on fire Grin

Why would you butter the bread?!

Definitely never in the microwave Shock

GinIsIn · 21/02/2017 05:08

There are people who MICROWAVE cheese on toast?! Shock heathens!! Grin

I'm with your DH on this - why would you want one side of the bread to be soggy?

Redglitter · 21/02/2017 05:54

Tartyflette Maybe the difference is we always called it toasted cheese. Anyway as I said it's how my dad made it and it was delicious Smile

LubiLooLoo · 21/02/2017 07:39

Butter one side, grill. Flip then add cheese and grill again. Makes the inside all gooey but still has integrity.

Also you husband butters and cheeses on the same side?! WTF!
