AIBU to make DD pay for driving lessons (that are from me)?

Hi all,

My daughter is 17. She is just beginning to learn to drive. I'm giving her lessons - I have offered to get her 'proper' ones for Christmas, but she finds it better with me.

I take her everyday, so that's an hour of my time. I don't mind, but I work from home, so my time is obviously really important. AIBU to charge her £5 for an hour?

She seems to roll her eyes when I ask for it, saying that her friends' parents don't make them pay (that typical phrase! Grin) so AIBU?

Yes yabu, but you are joking aren't you?

Bluebeck · 20/11/2016 20:23

Wow! Yes I think YABU! She has to pay to spend time with you?

Georgiesgirl · 20/11/2016 20:24

I hope you're kidding.

woonnoow · 20/11/2016 20:24

No? Obviously I'm considering giving it back to her, when she passes her test.

It would be fair to charge her for petrol I guess. But not for your time...

MrsMozart · 20/11/2016 20:24

Really?

You want her to pay?

Words fail.

FuzzyDiamond · 20/11/2016 20:25

YABU

harderandharder2breathe · 20/11/2016 20:25

Yabu, if you don't want to do it then pay a professional

Rainatnight · 20/11/2016 20:25

Why would you take it from her in the first place? And there's no 'obviously' about it. That wasn't in your first post. Hmm

Diel · 20/11/2016 20:26

Yabu, surely that falls under parenting? Would you charge for helping with homework?

woonnoow · 20/11/2016 20:26

Because I'm not minted?

TheNaze73 · 20/11/2016 20:26

Really???

Biscuit
MagicMojito · 20/11/2016 20:27

Yeah, thats a bit odd Confused

GreenTureen · 20/11/2016 20:27

Yes YABU. If you can spare the time then do it with good grace. If not, tell her you can't and she'll need to save for proper lessons.

TaliDiNozzo · 20/11/2016 20:28

Are you kidding? You're going to charge her because you're not minted but you're in a position to pay for proper lessons for her? That doesn't even make sense!

Boogers · 20/11/2016 20:28

If you're not minted then why would you give it back to her after she's passed her test? It doesn't make sense.

And YABU.

FannyWisdom · 20/11/2016 20:28

If you can't afford the fuel and insurance then let her buy lessons.

witsender · 20/11/2016 20:28

Well, do an hour's work in the evening instead, to make up time. Helping your kids is part of parenting.

woonnoow · 20/11/2016 20:29

Proper lessons would be for Christmas...

Redglitter · 20/11/2016 20:29

You'd actually charge your daughter an hourly rate. Bloody hell that's charming. I've never heard of any parent charging their child when they took them out for driving lessons Shock

JCo24 · 20/11/2016 20:29

It's actually illegal to charge for lessons when you're not qualified to teach.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 20/11/2016 20:30

Why not? I'm charging my 2yo for English lessons. He's racking up quite a bill.

ConvincingLiar · 20/11/2016 20:30

I don't think any parents charge their children for driving lessons.

Abraiid2 · 20/11/2016 20:30

Helping a child learn to drive is just something parents do. You can't charge.

RitaCrudgington · 20/11/2016 20:30

Parents sometimes charge their teenaged children for board and lodging, share of bills etc. They do not charge for their time, otherwise we'd all be handing over bills for a hundred grand when they left home.
